Trigger warning for medical content. My prostate is now gone as is the cancer which had grown on it.the used an area specific pain block administered after surgery I have been relatively pain-free all day though the hints are being to grow. What remains to be seen are the biopsies collected from surrounding tissue during the surgery. I’m in this amazing room on the ninth floor that has a window looking out over the West side of Houston from the medical center.

@Keith G: Good luck & best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Like you, I now have insurance because of Obamacare. The first year I got the insurance on the exchange, but now I’m actually on an employer plan, due to the ACA requirement that they cover part-timers. Paying that first year was a bit rough, but now the Colorado Community College system is picking up most of the tab. Yay!
@Keith G: Good luck and heal up! I’m using my Obamacare to juggle my meds and contemplate having surgery.

Apropos of a music thread … if you’re looking to grab a really good pair of headphones at a ridiculous price, Massdrop is going to be selling re-badged Sennheiser 650s for $199. The sale goes live at 9:00 a.m. Eastern time on Election Day.
It looks like I’m going to be in San Francisco on 11/19 (Saturday), but only during the day. Should we try to organize a brunch meetup? If not, it just gives me more time at the Exploratorium.
It works brilliantly, but I still wonder what kind of drugs somebody was on when they decided to bring in Stevie Ray Vaughn to play on a Jennifer Warnes record of Leonard Cohen songs.
Alas, and also alack-a-day. YouTube is refusing to let me see some of these no doubt weird and wonderful music videos. I go to click on them and it says we ain’t got it, nope, sorry.
Pout.
Anyway, I found this on Vox. It’s a look at what Hillary has to offer in social policy. It’s the kind of campaign coverage that the America mainstream media has largely ignored this cycle in favour of horse-race bullshit.
David Bowie on the Cher Show, presuming Cher and David Bowie singing Song Sung Blue and Da Do Ron Ron counts as crossover.
Found this one on a deep dive of YouTube. I loved the Sonny and Cher show, as well as the Cher Show when I was a kid, so this may well have been my first encounter with David Bowie. Sad!
Queen Bey and the Dixie Chicks slayed. A big fat fuck off to the #MAGA crowd and a reminder that country music has black roots. I liked seeing the audience where the musicians were loving it and rocking out and other people looked like they smelled something bad. America is changing and we will not go back.

@Mnemosyne: Sure, why not? We can meet at the Exploratorium, since I don’t know what that is.
Noticing that the Early vote numbers in FL NC and NV don’t line up with the media narrative of a Trump comeback. Going to be sad when everyone realize the polls were rigged…but in Trumps favor.
Our Dad spent quite a bit of time there on chemo in a safe room, sterile with filtered air flow talking to his family through a glass window on a little telephone. They were working to get his blood count numbers right for him to enter a clinical trial.
That worked, and the trial drug worked also against his rare CMML leukemia. Instead of the normal 9 month survival after diagnosis, he was able to play with his grandkids for years.
Probably the best cancer treatment center in the world. Best of luck there, in Houston. No reason for you not to be free to walk around town before too long.
We’re all pulling for you!

@Keith G: Good for you. My aunt is fighting the big C and honestly she isn’t going to make it. I like to be the positive person in the household. I also don’t want to be that person that goes to WebMD and acts like I am a doctor. But I went there and from what I know she will not win this battle.
I used to live in Houston until very recently and had a very close connection to MD Anderson, both professionally (but I am not a doctor) and as the child of a prostate cancer patient. MD Anderson is very good at what it does.
Stay positive. It’s prostate…you have a great fighting chance, even against metastasis. Disclaimer though: I am not a doctor, and am not giving medical advice.

@J R in WV: So I guess Anderson is that good. They run TV ads where I live, outside of St. Louis. I find this strange because we have one of the best hospitals in the world in Barnes. Heck as I noted in my last comment my aunt is very sick. Told they couldn’t operate. Barnes was like we can do that. The surgery on her pancreatic cancer a total success. Problem was the cancer had spread all throughout her body. I practice PMA. Positive Mental Attitude. When you hear doctors say there is nothing we can do, well that puts my positive mental attitude on hold.

@NotMax: I spent last week at Asilomar, on the Monterey Peninsula. It is now a state park and conference center, but it started out as a YWCA camp. Phoebe Hearst, William Randolph’s mother, was a benefactor of the YWCA, who hired Julia Morgan. She designed the social hall, the dining room, a chapel, several of the cabins, and a magnificent auditorium, all in the Arts and Crafts style. I was there for a Scottish country dance retreat. We had a formal ball in the auditorium.
What remains to be seen are the biopsies collected from surrounding tissue during the surgery
It is a cause of lasting regret that my doctors insisted on cutting my testicle into thin slices for biopsy, so I never got to take it home and keep it on the mantelpiece in a jar.
@Keith G: Congrats on what sounds like successful surgery. I had testicular cancer about 18 months ago. They got it all, no chemo/radiation needed. Recovery was quick too.
I’m also growing a mustache since it’s Movember and fundraising with it. I’m probably in the bottom 27% for mustache growing ability, so December 1 can’t get here soon enough
@Tommy: My mom died of pancreatic cancer in 87. It’s one cancer medical science is having a challenging time finding/developing an effective chemo treatment for. You can sometimes buy a little time but that’s almost always it.
I hope you and yours are able to find ways to keep your aunt comfortable and feeling wrapped in love and peace.
And, good to see you again!
