Jon Ralston twits a nice tweet:
Dems win Clark by 11,000-plus, will be ahead overall there by 72K-plus, more than 2012. May be game over in NV for GOP.

Hi! Hell of a nightmare just woke me up, so I’m here to get it out of the mental pipes. Weird take on “The Babadook,” with a monster who tracks his victims by means of white string, bits of it tacked up on walls like a blazed trail.
In the weird logic of nightmares, it was terrifying. My stepdaughter was visiting (age 16 or so, but she’s 32 now) and there was white string leading to her friend’s garage.
Fuck what an awful nightmare.
So I’m here to think about something calming. Like politics.
piratedan
well, with today’s (or is it now yesterday’s?) revelations… we get to pile on additional evidence that the GOP has managed to put forth the worst political candidate in recent (much less historic) memory…
so now we have the current Ms. Trump, working illegally in the US, juxtaposed against Trump’s claim of wanting to deport anyone here illegally. Unless they’re smoking hot I suppose.. or have the appropriate amount of high cheekbones or melanin content. Naturally this will not have an impact on his core voters because they agree, that smoking hot white women will always be welcome on our shores. Especially if they don’t mind wearing that Halloween Naughty Nurse outfit.
then the sexual affairs disclosures. What I note, is that they took place during his third marriage and only ten years ago, a full decade post the Access Hollywood tape. Obviously, Donald has moved on from random assault to paid courtesans… it’s great news that God has redeemed him and made him a changed man, per our evangelical betters.
Also awesome news about the AZ anti-collection law being struck down, which means that those votes collected by folks can be delivered and counted instead of challenged. Same for the other Dem legal victories in NC, Ohio and Kansas. These asshats tried to use the courts to make it as tough as possible for folks to exercise their ability to vote and for that, I would love to see them busted for it.
Incredible news about latino turnout. Makes me wonder if the Clintons knew about this and that’s why were still seeing the effort in Arizona. If the movement here is any where similar to what is taking place in Nevada and Florida, we could be talking Arpaio gone, Clinton winning the state and even McCain being sent packing (last WaPo had Kirkpatrick within 3 last week).

Elmo
@redshirt: Thanks; I actually was telling myself, in the dream, that I should calm down because after all how bad could the monster be, really? He was a dark little creature like the Babadook drawing.
But the white string leading to my stepdaughter…
Emerald
I’ve always believed that the Latino vote would swamp Trump easily, and that virtually none of the polls have included enough of them to get a real picture of what’s going on. So rather like in 2012, the polls really are skewed, but in Trump’s favor. Reality is going to bite hard.
Latinos and women. I’m betting that a good 25% of Republicans will vote for Hillary, far from a majority, but quite enough.
It’s gonna be a blowout. Always was gonna be a blowout. You cannot win the presidency of this country with only angry white men. The only questions I have left are: will we win Texas and can we take the House? (Both still unlikely, imho, but actually possible, depending on the size of the blowout.)

I had a weird encounter tonight in midtown Sacramento. I’d just parked and was putting my card in the meter when a little old (white) lady came up and started talking to me. We comiserated about how parking had gone up in the area because of the stupid stadium for the stupid crappy Kings. I mentioned that I was on my way to a reception for the San Jose State MLIS program; Sacramento is hosting the California Library Association conference this weekend, and I was excited to finally meet some of my classmates, since the program is completely online.
The woman I was talking to mentioned that she loved the library, and then, oddly, that Laura Bush was a librarian. I nodded and smiled politely and didn’t say that Laura Bush always seemed to be on high doses of anti-anxiety meds (no judgement; frequently so am I). Then the lady said something about Michelle Obama having a law degree “but she’s not a lawyer”, and I started thinking I should make my exit. Too late, though, because the lady’d already gotten to “Hillary’s going to be indicted.”
I sighed wearily and said, “No. No she’s not,” but that didn’t deter this person, because she listens to radio and watches TV so she knows it’s true. She name-checked the American Center for Law and Justice, and I was like, “Oh, hell fucking no, I’m out of here,” but not before the woman insisted that Hillary was a crook. I said, “Well, I’m sure not voting for Trump”, at which point she earnestly told me that Hillary doesn’t care about black people (of which I am obviously one) and just wants our votes. She was going on about how Trump was going to kick out “the illegals” as I was discovering that I can walk surprisingly fast in heels when I want to. Just as well I didn’t know about the Melania thing at the time.

@Anne Laurie: Yes. Thanks.
I don’t understand it but that was much better.

Well,I tried to early vote in AZ. It was a 2 and 1/2 hour wait. Went to a second location – 2 hr wait. Ran into a woman with a disabled couple leaving and they left because the elderly guy using a walker couldn’t handle a 2 hr wait. She said they came from my fist place because they were told #2 location had a 45 min wait. I called the AZ State Dem Party which doesn’t answer the phones on the Friday before election day(it’s the first # that comes up when you Google AZ Dem Party.) I called the County Dems who had no idea

I called the County Dems who 1/ had no idea about the waits 2/ Couldn’t tell you if some locations had a shorter wait. I called the County Recorders office who didn’t know where the waits might be shorter. On my own, I called the Rec Center where there was an early voting location and asked the guy who answere the phone if he knew there was a long wait there. He told me in a very anoyed voice that all the places are having a long wait and they had a 45 min wait. I have to plan around my schedule on Tuessay to go in early but as far as I am concerned, this is voter suppression and planned to depress you turnout. The elections guy at location 1 told me it’s going to be worse on Tuesday because only 25 percent of people have early voted. BTW, I early voted in 08 and waited maybe 30 mins and it was high turnoUT that year.
Excuse the double post.

@Elmo:
Even more than usual, nightmares are neurochemical. The fear happens first, then the brain explains it. I’ve had one single night terror, when I was around ten. It was just a shoe. Didn’t do anything, just a shoe. The fear was so bad I couldn’t tell reality from dream when I woke up, and I still remember it vividly.
@Emerald:
My prediction from the beginning was that Trump would carry the white male vote just like Romney, but permanently damage the GOP with Latinos, losing them a few percentage points overall they can’t afford. That’s basically come true, but there have been no numbers on how big a difference it makes.
@BillinGlendaleCA:
Yeah, I looked up what the actors/actresses wanted before I voted on the mandatory condom referendum. They want ‘no.’ I’m worried it sounds like it helps them, and will be passed through well-meaning ignorance. Even more than the condoms, apparently it makes the performers vulnerable to random lawsuits by viewers!
Major Major Major Major
@Frankensteinbeck: Yep. Condoms are already required by law but enforced by, y’know, law enforcement types. This bill would let any ‘ol joe sue to enforce the law rather than let all the DA’s(?) en masse decide to not care, as they do now.
opiejeanne
In my state, Washington, we have an EV who has announced that if Hillary wins the state he will not cast his electoral ballot for her, calls her a criminal and says she hasn’t done enough for Native Americans; that suggests that he would vote for her despite thinking she’s a criminal if she had spent more time on this cause. The only thing we can do is fine him $1000.

@mai naem mobile: you can thank the GOP lady who runs the elections… I’m sure that there are plenty of early voting locales in the GOP areas (or maybe not, the primary was a shitshow, why should we expect the national to be any better?)

@Mary G: they had stories on the news of people waiting four hrs. There was one about a woman being turned away at 330pm in Carefree, a high income area, even though the polls were supposed to close at 5 pm.
RK
How does a shoe cause night terror?
Frankensteinbeck
@RK:
It doesn’t. That’s the point. The fear and what’s in the dream are only vaguely connected, and the connection is the fear changing the dream.
mai naem mobile
@piratedan: oh, trust me, i absolutely will not vote for Helen Purcell who I was willing to give the benefit of doubt because I figured she was just incompetent for the screw up in the primaries,not maliciously incompetent. Location 1 was at the library and I happened to talk to a library employee going up the elevator and she said it had been long waits all week long so the Recorders office had to have known. BTW, I have never had a problem election day voting. I am usually in and out in 10~30 mins.
RK
@Frankensteinbeck: You dreamed of a shoe? Are you David Lynch?
Are you saying a dream can’t spark fear?
Frankensteinbeck
@RK:
Basically. The normal route is the fear sparking the dream. Neurochemical surge first, dream after, and that means the result doesn’t have to be anything you’d find scary in real life. You haven’t had identical dreams that are scary one time and not another? Or a nightmare about something so goofy it would never scare you, awake? Hell, night terrors are USUALLY just a formless sense of terror, a feeling of being watched and threatened. That or someone indistinct standing at the foot of the bed.
RK
@Frankensteinbeck:
Don’t think so, no.
I suppose night terrors are something other than nightmares.
Darkrose
@Frankensteinbeck: Apparently there’s concern that actors and actresses will have their real names exposed. Also, it seems like it was designed to give one guy in CA a job watching porn for “monitoring purposes.”
Frankensteinbeck
@RK:
Night terrors actually are different from nightmares, yes. If you haven’t had goofy nightmares, your subconscious is particularly good at backfilling. Emotion first, then thought, is how the brain usually works awake, and asleep you don’t have the rational protections to try and override it.
David ?▶️Bad Hombres▶️? Koch
@Darkrose:
So you ran into Susan Sarandon.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Frankensteinbeck: To be quite blunt, the problem with condoms in porn is that it’s not done in one take. These folk are fucking for hours and even the extra heavy duty condoms will break over and over again. So if the condoms are always breaking while filming, what’s the point?
ETA: Performers are tested at least once a month(sometimes every 2 weeks, depending on the production company) for STD’s. If you show up for without ID and a negative test, you’re not filming and not getting paid.
Frankensteinbeck
@Darkrose:
I read about the privacy issues too, but figured I couldn’t explain it briefly, and I run long in explanations as it is.
Gator90
@RK: Have you ever really looked at a shoe? I mean, really looked at it?
BillinGlendaleCA
@Darkrose: Porn actors real names are out there, there’s a site called pornopedia that has real names. Basically, if you think you’re going to do porn and your bg/gf or family won’t find out, you’re fooling yourself.
Frankensteinbeck
@BillinGlendaleCA:
I’m really worried it will pass because it sounds as if it helps the performers. But all I could do is vote ‘no.’ It was the only referendum I made sure to look up and vote on, because those folks are already in such danger of exploitation. I wanted to do right by them if they’ve been put on the chopping block somehow.
Frankensteinbeck
@Gator90:
Ha! In a way, you have it nailed. That’s usually a stoner joke, and sleep is the ultimate altered state of consciousness. Shit doesn’t have to make sense, and usually doesn’t.

@Gator90: lol
Is that nobody wants to see them.
Waldo
@BillinGlendaleCA: I’d be less troubled by a family member working in porn than by one obsessed with outing porn stars.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Frankensteinbeck: Right now the porn business sucks due to people stealing content on the internet and amateurs making their own stuff(good cameras are cheap). Back in the nineties and early aughts, most performers didn’t escort; most do now since there’s not enough work.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Waldo: Outing performers is evil.
ETA: Some do get outed if they have run ins with the legal system. A Korean actress got busted for assault a couple of times and ended up being a guest of the State of California. In that case their real names become part of the public record.
RK
Come to think of it, I once experienced a day terror after looking too intently at a pair of Crocs.

In all seriousness, Van Gogh demonstrated that shoes, looked at in the right way, can be objects of extraordinarily haunting beauty. Even (especially) old, worn-out shoes.
Betty Cracker
Regarding long lines at early voting places, it really pisses me off that Republicans keep getting away with this shit. Other voter suppression measures like blatantly targeted voter ID laws are a disgrace, of course, but I can at least understand how low-info voters allow that kind of thing to slide: They’ve bought into lies about voter fraud, and, since most voters have drivers’ licenses, they can’t comprehend how it could be a hardship for others to obtain them.
But restrictions that result in interminable lines inconvenience everyone, and it’s clear who is doing it and why. Here in Florida, the Republican governor and GOP legislature cut the early voting period almost in half in 2012, and as a result, there were six-hour lines at some polling places. A study by the right-leaning Orlando Sentinel found at least 200K people didn’t vote due to the inconvenience. It’s outrageous.
Darkrose
@BillinGlendaleCA: That doesn’t surprise me. I knew nothing about the initiative when I first went to vote; when I did some research, that was one of the concerns I saw mentioned.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Betty Cracker: We don’t have much early voting opportunities here in LA. On weekdays there’s only one location for the county(the County Registrar in Norwalk) and there’s 5 locations on weekends. There’s only about 7 million people in the county.
