Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Bark louder, little dog.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

You cannot shame the shameless.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

In my day, never was longer.

SEK was one of the funniest and most insightful guys who’s ever blogged. He was the guy, as a matter of fact, who convinced me that I could do it back in 2009 or so.

Never met him or talked to him outside of a couple comment replies at LGM, but there was always just some searing humanity on display in his writing, even when he was just messing around.

@Pogonip: Dr. Scott Eric Kaufman, PhD. He documented the absolutely amazingly – in terms of just wacky to bad things happening to him – rough time he had completing his doctorate at Acepholous:
    http://acephalous.typepad.com/

He then moved to Lawyers, Guns, and Money and while still a front pager there to paying gigs at Raw Story and Salon after he left academia.

Dr. Kaufman had been ill – severely to chronically and cycling between the two – for a very long time. Every time it appeared he had managed to make it through into something better either illness or some other calamity would befall him.

He was always funny, snarky, and just astounded by events he was involved with and/or that happened around him.

Never thought I’d live to see the day when a reality star game show host would be elected to the highest political office in the land.

Fix’d for accuracy. “The Apprentice” wasn’t a reality show. It was a game show. Trump was a game show host. He doesn’t even get the fig leaf of “reality star” from me that the Kardashians get.

He was a game show host, and people decided he should run a large complicated country because how hard could the job be if a Black man was doing it?

@celticdragonchick: I really enjoyed the Oldman Cat diaries – glad the cats have got new homes.

On December 31, 2016, I’m going to make a bonfire out of 2016 calendars – it’ll be nice to bid this year farewell, so I can start scraping it off my shoe. Not looking forward to 2017, though. Wasn’t it Heraclitus who was known as the “crying philosopher” because he cried at the follies of mankind?

I would smile, though, if someone manages to hack into the loudspeakers and play the Star Wars Darth Vader Theme just before The Donald starts his speech. It would be a nice homage to Democritus, who laughed at the follies of mankind…

In that light, it is obvious why people didn’t have qualms about Trump having no education or experience in government. I can’t help but wonder what they think DOES qualify someone for a job.

You don’t really wonder. They think that if a person is the “right” race/ethnicity and the “right” gender, they should get the high-paying job. If there are extra jobs left over, the rest of us can have them if we can prove our credentials. It’s a pretty well-known truism that men are hired based on their potential and women are hired based on their credentials.

The saddest part is that there are still a lot of women who believe this just as wholeheartedly.

@Schlemazel: I was writing in the previous two threads about an,interaction that I had on John’s FB page, in which I stated that there seems to be an aggrieved subsection of the WWC who believes they are entitled to low-skill jobs making $100K, with only a HS education. I noted that I think that everyone should make a decent living with full-time work. One of Cole’s friends took issue with that, essentially stating that there was nothing unreasonable with a HS grad in a low-skill job expecting to be rich, and (in summary) arguing that higher education shouldn’t be a significant differentiator in the marketplace. I was noting in the thread that the cohort of people who appear to feel this way is much larger than I thought.

@Patricia Kayden: I know I’ve mentioned previously on this blog that I had a few opportunities to meet and interact with him when I worked for the Canadian Consulate General here. He is invariably gracious. My first encounter with John Lewis is when acid rain was the big bilateral issue between Canada and the U.S., and I was tasked with phoning every congressional district office in our seven-state territory to get a bead on their position on acid rain (this was during the late-Reagan/early-Bush 41 administration). Just about every office I called, I either talked to an intern or left a message on the answering machine (I don’t think we had “voice mail” per se then). But when I called John Lewis’s Atlanta office, he actually picked up the phone himself. We had a nice chat, and he was totally on board with confronting acid rain, had a solid understanding of the causes, consequences, and possible remedies.

Worked with him several years later on planning his annual international/multicultural festival. Canada had a booth. He stopped by on the day and had his picture taken with our life-sized Mountie cutout :-)

SEK also had some amazing interactions with his Southern neighbors:

SEK was driving to the Winn-Dixie, about a block away from his house, when a man ran into the street waving his arms wildly. SEK pulled over, thinking the man’d just chopped off some vital extremity with his lawnmower or something.

    SEK: You need help?

MAN: Hey, you don’t live around here, do you?

SEK: I — are you all right?

    MAN: I don’t know you.

SEK: I live just around the corner (SEK said, pointing to his domicile).

MAN: Your music was really loud.

SEK: I’m deaf, so sometimes it gets a little loud. Sorry about that, I’ll try to —

MAN: What’s with your hat? Is that a gang thing?

    SEK: !?!

    MAN: Well?

SEK: It’s a lazy thing. Didn’t feel like combing my hair this morning. I’ve gotta get back home soon, get to work, you know?

    MAN: —

    …

Remember SEK’s NEIGHBOR? The one who thought SEK belonged to a gang because of his backward hat? Well, this morning SEK decided it was about time to start watching The Sopranos, and so when he was driving home from the grocery store and saw his NEIGHBOR, SEK thought it’d be a great idea to slow his car to a crawl and give NEIGHBOR a good eye-fucking. The fake neighborhood “police” started driving around until, finally, MR. POLICEMAN — with NEIGHBOR in tow — knocked on SEK’s door.

MR. POLICEMAN: Have you been threatening this man?

    SEK: What? No.

MR. POLICEMAN: Is that your car?

    SEK: Yes.

MR. POLICEMAN: He says a man in a hat was threatening him this morning.

SEK: (points to hair) I’m not wearing a hat.

NEIGHBOR: It’s you! You have a hat!

SEK: I’m sure I do somewhere. What’s this about, officer?

MR. POLICEMAN: Have you been speeding recently?

SEK: I’ve been in Houston, my sister just had a baby. Wanna see a picture?

    NEIGHBOR: He has a hat!

MR. POLICEMAN: So you haven’t been speeding?

SEK: I haven’t even been here.

NEIGHBOR: Ask him about his hat?

SEK: Do you need a hat, sir?

NEIGHBOR: I want to see your hat!

SEK: Officer, should I get him a hat?

MR. POLICEMAN: I don’t think that’ll be necessary. Sorry to have bothered you, sir.

NEIGHBOR looks at SEK. SEK waits until the officer turns around, then eye-fucks NEIGHBOR again.

NEIGHBOR: ASK HIM ABOUT HIS HAT!

MR. POLICEMAN: (to NEIGHBOR) We’re done here.

I’m only going to indulge myself once: From OLDMAN CAT FB page, back in August, when there was a flood threat:

[NICE CHURCH LADY came to SEK’s door and asked him if he had an evacuation plan “just in case,” and SEK said he’d looked up some shelters. She told him about some closer, unlisted ones.]
    SEK: Are they cat-friendly?
NICE CHURCH LADY: That depends — how sweet are your cats?

OLDMAN MUND: THE GODDAMN WATER BOWL IS DIRTY AGAIN
OLDMAN VIRGIL: I AM LOST IN THE DINING ROOM SAVE ME
OLDMAN MUND: IT WAS CLEAN FIVE MINUTES AGO WHAT THE FUCK
OLDMAN VIRGIL: NOW I AM LOST IN THE KITCHEN SAVE ME
OLDMAN MUND: DON’T MAKE ME KNOCK THIS SHIT OVER I WILL DO IT
OLDMAN VIRGIL: I AM RIGHT NEXT TO NOW YOU SAVE ME I AM LOST

SEK: They’re adorable — just adorable.

Fuck this fucking year. It knows no mercy. I’m glad his old men have homes, at least.
I’d ask what this year has left in store, but for me I know; gotta put my cat to sleep soon. Which I mention here because back in May Anne Laurie was wonderful enough to post my link to raise funds for his care, and all you good people here came through in spades. That money gave me another 6 months with him, the first few like he was young again, so there’s no way for me to thank all of you enough. It was bonus time with him, but now it’s just a matter of time, and when he gets too weak or starts to suffer. For now he’s comfortable, and just wants to be close to me, always. Thank you all so much, and apologies for wandering from the immediate loss.

    @Suzanne:

I was writing in the previous two threads about an,interaction that I had on John’s FB page, in which I stated that there seems to be an aggrieved subsection of the WWC who believes they are entitled to low-skill jobs making $100K, with only a HS education.

Hmm…perhaps we should ask them why it’s called “higher” education, then? I kid but one would think (hope? pray?) that with about 30 seconds thought most could figure out that ringing up McOrders doesn’t take as much training as helping people invest their life savings wisely, or teaching kids, and therefore wouldn’t be likely to be paid as much.

So many special snowflake issues these days…so many fewer Boomers around to blame that attitude on…so I guess it’s not the Boomers or Millenials or whatever, just plain ol’ human nature.

Thanks, Mnem, just ordered on Kindle. I’ve owned the dead tree version for a while, but my ripening cataracts* keep me from reading much of anything where I can’t adjust the font size.

*(After years of stasis, the cataracts seem to be progressing quickly — I’ve been aware of them literally just in the last two weeks, and for the most part I was ascribing my blurry vision to non-stop sobbing at the election results. But I think it’s time for the long-promised surgery, and will be calling my eye doctor tomorrow for an evaluation and rec for the tiny-knife-and-wee-vacuum-cleaner. Have cancelled my trip to Canada for American Thanksgiving with my bi-national cousin — driving anywhere but my most familiar routes is bothersome, and mixed with possible nasty weather, I just don’t wanna.)

HALF-NAKED MALE: STOP HARASSING US YOU PERVERT OR I’LL REPORT YOU!

ME: (still holding door) You’ll report me for your having sex in my office?

HALF-NAKED MALE: GO THE FUCK AWAY!

ME: (still holding door) That’s it. Put your clothes back on. You can’t have sex in my office.

HALF-NAKED MALE: DON’T YOU FUCKING DARE COME IN HERE!

    (my student walks up)

    MY STUDENT: What’s going on?

ME: (still holding door) Some people are trying to have sex in my office. I keep interrupting them.

MY STUDENT: Are they really having sex in there?

HALF-NAKED MALE: THIS IS SEXUAL HARASSMENT!

ME: (props open door with rubber stop) They’re trying.

This continues for a couple more minutes. He shouts profanity, she starts crying, &c. About two minutes later the couple emerges and I get some nasty looks. Who am I to stop them from having sex in my office?

Here’s the link for the updates:
    http://acephalous.typepad.com/acephalous/2005/12/my_morning_the__1.html

    MONDAY, 12 DECEMBER 2005

    My Morning: The Final Chapter

On Thursday, two students somehow feel entitled to have relations in your office. You interrupt their passionate paroxysms. He cries sexual harassment. And wolf. And for his mother. She cries. And cries. And cries.

Come Monday, the Sexual Harassment Police call you to “talk” about “the incident.” You are asked to participate in a “fact-finding interview.” You ask the investigator what this about and are informed that its purpose can be discussed it in detail on Friday. An hour later, you send the investigator an email asking for more information and the response contains nothing but a link to your employer’s sexual harassment policy.

On Wednesday you call the Sexual Harassment Police to confirm the time of your “fact-finding interview.” The person who answers the phone informs you that your “hearing” will occur on Friday at 10:00 AM. “My hearing?!?” you interrobang. Only polite-like because you’re from the South and in the South one interrobangs politely.

Given this sequence of events, would you suppose that the student had followed through with his threat to file a sexual harassment complaint against you? The patently spoiled student swore a blood oath. The investigator stonewalled you. The secretary sprung a hearing on you. Things had spun out of control.

So you don’t sleep well . . . and when you muster some winks you dream about tar and torn down-pillows. You imagine yourself covered in the first feathering of countless young birds and everyone (denuded fowl included) points and laughs at you.

You wake from these dreams dripping sweat and craving chicken. (You are determined to give those stripped striplings the what-for they so richly deserve.) So you wouldn’t sleep that much. You would occupy the couch and watch terrible movies while your wife slept soundly in the bedroom. You would fear the hounds this indulged undergraduate loosed upon you. You would fear the investigator who refused to divulge details. You would fear your shadow and inadvertently damn New England to another six bitter winter weeks. Don’t deny it. You would . . .

. . . and in doing so you would involve yourself in the monumental misunderstanding that has been my life for the more than a week now. Today I have been thoroughly detenebrated. (Not defenestrated. In this house only cats are defenestrated. And only by other cats. And in good fun. Except for the defenestrated feline. Who was fine.) I have seen the errors of my cynical ways because today I learned that sometimes people are not out to destroy all I hold dear with hot tar and serious plumage. Turns out no one filed a complaint.

Turns out the Sexual Harassment Police wondered whether I wanted to file one. Why couldn’t the investigator have told me this over the phone last week? Why all the cryptic comments about coming in to discuss it? Apparently that’s protocol in sexual harassment cases. The investigator prefers to question faces over voices. The investigator also cannot fathom how I would think a complaint had been filed against me.

From the perspective of the investigator, I had cancelled Friday’s meeting and lawyered up as prelude to filing suit against the university for creating an environment in which I could be harassed. When I lawyered up, they consulted their lawyers and all of this is nothing more than the result of an initial but fundamental misunderstanding: I took the student’s complaint seriously because we live in a litigious culture. The investigator thought I would have some common sense about the situation. From there our attempts to aid each other according to the policies which bind us both were doomed to fail.

What I want to know from you good people is whether 1) I have lost faith in humanity and need to learn to love my fellow man again or 2) treated this situation with admirable cynicism. Sadly I seem to feel both options equally compelling. But then I’m still swimming in suspect ambiguity and haven’t learned my lesson. I need to learn my lesson.

And sleep. All day. And all of the night.

[This melancholia has been brought to you by Wilco’s Kicking Television, John Vanderslice’s Pixel Revolt and Wolf Parade’s Apologies to the Queen Mary. Excellent albums all. Music to despair your humanity to. What more could you ask for?]

LGM has put up an announcement that Scott has passed away. I know that since seems redundant given the announcement that he was going off life support, but my own mother hung on for several hours after we turned off the support machines. They are quoting an post put up by Scott’s brother. So now it’s “official.”

I’m sorry that his is dry, but the only honest response from me would be a string of profanity and that seems disrespectful even though I suspect Scott wouldn’t have minded.
