Work. Cooking — lots of cooking. (I finished shopping today and decided if I don’t have it now, I goddamned don’t need it.) Thankfully, everyone I’m spending Thanksgiving with voted for Hillary, or was not old enough to vote, so there probably won’t be any bloodshed!
(and for our auxiliary dessert, the youngest chose apple pomegranate crisp — hopefully yummy.)

I got done with my trainee last Tuesday; he’s off to train on second shift for a week before he is, hopefully, ready to fly solo and I can move to working Mon-Thur nights.
My reward was to get another trainee for the next two weeks. Goddammit, if I wanted to share space with other people, I wouldn’t work overnights.

@efgoldman: yay?
Suzanne
@efgoldman: Yeah, I’m not sure if I should offer condolences or congratulations.
Major Major Major Major
@Suzanne: I guess less complaining in the world is always good.

I think I may want one of those goofy goal planner/”gratitude journal” things for this year since I do have several creative goals I’m trying to reach. I just want one that doesn’t have too much woo in it.
fuckwit
@efgoldman: A second civil war? Shit, we still haven’t finished fighting the first one…
James Powell
@Mnemosyne:
What is woo? And how would having it present a problem?
Major Major Major Major
@James Powell: hippie bullshit.

Awake, unplanned, again. Wife in PT convalescing new knee, and our regular Thanksgiving trip is not taken this year.
I am bringing her dinner Thursday. Trying to figure if her cat can visit tomorrow with any good end. This place has a policy allowing well-behaved pets up to date on shots. The latter he is, the former I don’t know I can guarantee, even in the carrier.
RandomMonster
I start a new job next week, and my first day will be flying to France on a business trip. It’s a bit surreal.
Mnemosyne
@James Powell:
“Woo” would be that whole Oprah-esque “law of attraction” mysticism about goal planning. I don’t mind a little bit of hippie-ish sunshine, but the “law of attraction” stuff is creepy.
Mnemosyne
@ThresherK (GPad):
“Well-behaved” usually means “won’t poop on the carpet.” Cats rarely do that no matter how upset they are.
ThresherK (GPad)
@Mnemosyne: It’s solid flooring. I was thinking “pee in the carrier” as the deal breaker even tho it has a towel in it.
Even if not, I don’t want to do this if he’ll just get snarly and growly and not even stick his head out to see his Mistress. And whine-meow himself hoarse on the trip to and from.
ruemara
@RandomMonster: Oooo. Very congrats. Bring us back something nice.
I will be trying to redesign a whole video series’ look and feel in 3 days. These guys are lucky the new print designer is a moonlighting filmmaker. And cooking. I finally set the meal plan. Oxtail stew in the Jamaican style (they’re already marinating); phyllo crust apple guava tart with crumbled Camembert blue cheese & toasted walnuts; artichoke & brie bites in puff pastry. I just need to make a dish a night before Thursday. This will be a long week. And I have a ton of cookies to bake.

@James Powell: I’ve tried to get your attention twice now about this: I’m not sure where you’re located, but you are welcome to join us on Thanksgiving at my place near Seattle, or my daughter’s for Christmas in Seattle; you will encounter no Trumpists at either event.

One inch of rain here today outside the cave!
Nice story on this thread I’ve been ready over at Noirish LA: Guy who lived up on Mt. Washington passes away and the real estate guy comes by to clean the place up for sale and find maps, lots of maps. Calls the LA Public Library and asks if they’d be interested. They stop by and find a treasure trove of maps, at least doubling their current collection!
Mary G
@BillinGlendaleCA: Yes, they saw it would fizzle out before it got this far south, but it sprinkled for hours and now it’s pouring!
BillinGlendaleCA
@Mary G: That’s pretty much how it was today until after dark and then it started raining pretty hard.

This was posted on Democrats Abroad facebook page — some action that can be taken re: the ACA. Apparently the zombie eyed granny starver wants to determine support for ACA appeal/repeal. Sounds like from the comments that the system is pretty wonky (likely on purpose), but it’s something to do, although I’m not particularly optimistic that the support for ACA will be acknowledged or truthfully represented by his office.
CALL TO ACTION REGARDING THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT:
5 Minutes Maximum Time Requirement
Speaker Paul Ryan’s office is conducting a survey hoping to show a popular mandate to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare). While the ACA is imperfect, millions of Americans who previously didn’t have health insurance have been able to get coverage. Repealing the ACA would take away subsidies for those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford health insurance and make health insurance unaffordable for those with pre-existing health conditions. Calling into Paul Ryan’s survey is easy and you don’t need to talk to anyone, you just punch in numbers on your phone.
Here’s how:
1. Call 202-225-3031. (This is his real DC office #)
2. Wait through 40-60 seconds of complete silence or a strange electronic sound; the phone won’t even ring. Seriously. You’ll think your call wasn’t connected.
3. You will be prompted by the survey.
4. Press 2 to participate.
5. Press 1 to register your support for ACA. (You don’t have to wait for the message to finish).
If it says mailbox full or no messages after hours hang up and call back. It will work the second time.

@cosima: I didn’t get the seconds of silence in step 2 , but some propaganda about how great the replacement would be before the for or against question. Registered my support for ACA though.

One of the many things I enjoyed about Scott Kaufmann was his podcast discussions with Steve Attwell about Game of Thrones, both as TV series and work of art itself and the interaction with the books by G.R.R. Martin. https://www.youtube.com/user/scotterickaufman Thank you SEK for what all the knowledge and thought you shared just for the heck of it. You will be missed.

My sister’s family and two sets of cousins were visiting my mother about an hour from me last week, so we had an early and lovely Thanksgiving. We’re all in mourning about the election, so we didn’t talk about it at the dinner table. I’m just thankful to be alive for another year. Remember, no matter how grim things may seem, as long as you can find a bit of beauty in the world, there’s hope.*
*Upon a moment’s reflection, I’m not sure that’s technically true. You could admire the lovely sunset in the aftermath of a nearby hydrogen bomb, and you’d still die, but the beauty might give you some solace. Find joy wherever you can.

@Glaukopis in Ohio: Thank you for doing that! Because we’re now living in the UK, we have a daughter (in VT) who’s benefitted from the ACA since its inception. The ZEGS is a POS, but at least we can fill up his message/survey with SUPPORT for ACA, which I think he might find a bit different from what he expected (or maybe not, they guy’s total scum).
