Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

We still have time to mess this up!

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

American History and Black History can not be separated.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

It’s not hopeless, and we’re not helpless.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Glad to see john eastman going through some things.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Somebody needs to explain to DeSantis that nobody needs to do anything to make him look bad.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Donald Trump, welcome to your everything, everywhere, all at once.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

From respected Cascadia commentor OpieJeanne:

We will be in SoCal by Monday evening and someone suggested a meet-up next time we are in the Los Angeles area. Probably Mnemosyne. We’ll be there until the 20th, so maybe we can meet some people.

We’re staying in Blue Jay but we have a car and can travel. Saturday ( the 17th) is the only date we’re unavailable.

JPL told me to email you to post about it.

If you don’t want to put your personal info in the comments, send me an email at annelaurie dot verizon dot net, and I’ll hook you up with each other.

    You’ll come all the way in from Arrowhead? That’s a drive.

    I’m taking a little R&R in Cabo this week, but would love another meet up. Maybe Sunday the 18th?

    @James E Powell: Wouldn’t you drive from Arrowhead to meet us?

    ETA: I’m game for the meetup, since I suggested it. However, my car won’t go very far due to it’s age.

    I might be able to make it on Sunday. Transport is difficult the other days.

    I can probably do a meetup, though I do have a day job. Bill, I may be able to give you a lift if needed, depending on where it is.

    Sort of off-topic, California is fighting back, per the NYT.

    In immigrant-rich communities across America, there are more legitimate fears for the immigrants. Bills introduced this week in the California State Legislature confront them directly. One would create a program to finance legal services for immigrants fighting deportation. Another would provide training and advice on immigration law to public defenders’ offices. Come the purge — and Mr. Trump has said he is going after two million to three million people immediately — many will need lawyers.

    The third bill, potentially the most consequential, seeks to ensure that California will never be an accomplice to mass deportation. Its sponsor, Kevin de León, the California Senate president pro tempore, calls it the California Values Act, befitting a state that is nearly 40 percent Latino, and where one in four residents is foreign-born. It would bar state or local resources from being used for immigration enforcement, a strictly federal duty. No state or local law enforcement agency would be allowed to detain or transfer anyone for deportation without a judicial warrant.

    Nothing in the bill would obstruct the federal government. This is not a nullification of federal laws or a rebellion against the Constitution. It’s upholding the Fourth Amendment, preventing unreasonable search and seizure, so mothers and fathers can go to work and children go to school without fear of losing one another. It’s upholding the First Amendment, so day laborers can solicit work on a sidewalk. It’s allowing the local police to keep the trust and cooperation of crime victims and witnesses, who will not fear every encounter as a prelude to deportation.

    “Nobody wants bad people in our communities or neighborhoods or in our streets,” Mr. de León said, particularly the local and state police. “They’ll always go after the rapist, the violent criminal drug dealer; we’ve made that abundantly clear.”

    I’ve sent a fax to my Republican state senator and assemblyperson.

    @James E Powell: Yes, we can drive to a meeting and I kind of hoped we could find a place midway between us and everyone else, or at worst only 2/3 of the way out. Burbank is only 80 miles from Blue Jay and we are driving to CA from Seattle, what kind of sissies do you take us for? Midwesterners? ;-)

    Sunday the 18th is good for us if it works for everyone else, maybe for lunch? Or would supper be better?
    Where is Mary G? Isn’t she behind the Orange Curtain?

    Where are you coming from? Somewhere near Ventura? ETA: this should have been directed at Cthulhu.

    December 11, 2016 at 12:03 am

    @opiejeanne:

    Mary G has driven up from behind the Orange Curtain before, so that’s not a worry in itself, I don’t think.

    The one downside to Golden Road was that it’s very noisy inside, but they have a covered outside area that’s not nearly as bad.

    @opiejeanne: I ride the rails, if I need to go far. When I took the pics on the coast, I almost didn’t think I’d get back home. The poor car is older than some commenters at this here blog(it’s 31 as of last week).

    @Mnemosyne: And I can walk there.

    @opiejeanne: I’m think of taking the train up to Ventura, I here there’s a mission there.

    ETA: I was joking about that, I was raised in Ventura county and have driven past the mission there, I’ve just never been inside.

    @BillinGlendaleCA: Do we have many posters younger than your car? That is a venerable vehicle. We keep our cars as long as possible, but the longest was 15 years because we do insist that they run reliably and can take us farther than the market a mile away.

    @opiejeanne:

    Do we have many posters younger than your car?

    Major^4 may be close, I know PSI is younger. I did like my car for the first 20 years, it’s generally been trouble free. Now the bearings need replacing and I’m having some trouble with the gearshift(it often doesn’t stay in reverse, and 1st gear has been a bit of a problem lately). It also has no safety equipment save seatbelts.

    I had a similar experience with San Juan Capistrano, I last went there when I was 8. It was really nice to see it again and get some pics. And the train ride down there was nice.

    I’m pretty sure that Sunday 12/18 is fine for me.

  26. 26.

    opiejeanne

    December 11, 2016 at 1:19 am

    @Mnemosyne: Yay!
    Is there a second choice that you would suggest that’s not as noisy, where we wouldn’t have to eat outside to hear each other?

  27. 27.

    opiejeanne

    December 11, 2016 at 1:21 am

    @James E Powell: For us also, which is why I’d prefer midday, because driving the mountain after dark is not as much fun as you’d think.
    Where are you coming from that Burbank is central?

  28. 28.

    Mnemosyne

    December 11, 2016 at 1:26 am

    @opiejeanne:

    If it would be midday, we could try Story Tavern in Burbank again. It was ideal except for the fact that it turned out to be Irish music night the night that we went.

  29. 29.

    opiejeanne

    December 11, 2016 at 1:30 am

    @Mnemosyne: Ha! Would we be likely to have that same problem on a Sunday afternoon?

  30. 30.

    opiejeanne

    December 11, 2016 at 1:34 am

    @Mnemosyne: Looks like the only thing we’d have to worry about on the 18th is the brunch starting at 11am. Might be a lot of people, but doesn’t look like live music is on.

  31. 31.

    Mnemosyne

    December 11, 2016 at 1:35 am

    @opiejeanne:

    I’ll check their website tomorrow, but I don’t think anyone in LA has live music in the afternoon. There may be a sportsball game on, but they have large tables that can be reserved for groups of 10 or more.

  32. 32.

    Mnemosyne

    December 11, 2016 at 1:37 am

    @opiejeanne:

    One of the things I like about them is that they have a couple of large booths that are only for big parties, and they take reservations.

  33. 33.

    opiejeanne

    December 11, 2016 at 1:50 am

    @Mnemosyne: I checked their site, no music on the events calendar, so yay! Even though I do like Irish music.

  34. 34.

    Mnemosyne

    December 11, 2016 at 2:11 am

    @opiejeanne:

    I can try and make a reservation — what time do we want to shoot for?

    Also, they do have a dog patio, but it’s partially open to the street, so it might get chilly this time of year.

  35. 35.

    opiejeanne

    December 11, 2016 at 2:28 am

    @Mnemosyne: The high is supposed to be 58 on the 18th, so indoors sounds a bit better. If there’s a breeze at that temp it might be unpleasant and mr opiejeanne is less tolerant of cold than I am, although I have really had enough for a couple of weeks. The temps in Blue Jay this week are warmer than we’ve had all week in Woodinville, in the 40s and 50s. Supposed to get a little snow on Friday, just a dusting really.

    On that weekend, I would be coming from Temecula. Burbank is not central.

    @James E Powell: Yeah, not even close.

    It works for me. Should be fun.

    December 11, 2016 at 12:59 pm

    Count me in on the 18th. Story Tavern is fine, without the music. Which was good but loud. Almost any place with big enough tables is going to be somewhat crowded and busy. Or be outside.

  41. 41.

    cthulhu

    December 11, 2016 at 3:43 pm

    @opiejeanne:

    @Cthulhu: Central for whom? Where are you coming from, Ventura?

    I mean it was central for previous LA meet-ups (I was reading on my phone last night and didn’t catch the reference to Blue Jay). I am only coming from the Valley. But certainly willing drive further east. In fact, today I need to go to both Apple Valley and Riverside.

    That being said, I am definitely fine with the Story Tavern ;-)

  42. 42.

    opiejeanne

    December 12, 2016 at 9:40 am

    Ok, Story Tavern works for us, what time should we get there? Their brunch starts at 11, do we want to be there then or at noon, or?
