Reading the comments on the last house update, I’m actually kind of shocked that some of you think I’m not putting in railings on the stairs. Of course I am. After we get the walls painted and the flooring.
Jeebus. I’m accident prone (less so now that I am sober), but I’m not a moron.
Also, I bought a new pair of boots and yak trax and didn’t slip a bit on a sheet of ice the other day. They rule.
Larkspur
Sorry I asked about railings. I looked at the photos again and realized quickly that railings were to come later. Didn’t mean to offend you. Also, I very much like thistle. And the flooring is indeed beautiful. Are we okay? Should I start seeing other blogs?
John Cole
You weren’t the only one?
And now you are going to start cheating on us with other blogs. Sheesh!

@John Cole: Well if you told more dick jokes…

I love the floors and the colors are so cheerful. Except the green which makes me think of hospitals.

Those are some impressive, massively functional booties there. Ought to be able to stomp around something serious in those!
And I also approve of the thistle.

The pink room is especially nice.

I don’t know why you call that color orange. To me it looks like mustard. I have orange on a bedroom wall in my own house that I am redoing. I was trying to do am ombre thing and it turned out ugly. I really really like the flooring but why don’t you have the lights on when you took the pictures? If the electric off ? I hate the new trendy wood/wood tile/wood laminate floor colors. The grey ,blue and white worn looking crap. It looks ugly and unnatural.i also hate the different widths. Also unnatural looking.i think they make this crap “trendy” so that idiots put it in and then the shit has to be replaced in a few years because it dates the house and the same fools decide it’s now ugly and dated. I was at a tile place the other day and the ugly patterned tile from the 70s/early 80s is making its way back and also, small hexagon tiles in barf worthy colors.

@Mai.naem.mobile:
I can’t quite figure out what to do with that straight line.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: Calling thistle pink is one thing; but considering the history, mustard?
Comrade Scrutinizer
@BillinGlendaleCA: I’m looking for the house to wind up in the field with the Subaru before this is over.

@EBT: thought that’s what all the drumpf business was…tiny dick joke.

Yeah, who do you think he is, Emperor Palpatine?!
Having no railings in his stairwell… typical Galactic Empire cost-cutting move…

Just saw the house post. My only question – was Coop running the table saw? Looks like he has a snout full of sawdust?

John,
Tell us about the flooring? We used native WV hickory flooring, cut and milled over in Cohen, I think Nicholas County, but maybe Webster. It was a huge factory, now gone. And we did use random widths, which of course have to run the width of the room.
Then I got inspired and got a small load of walnut flooring from the same mill, and used it to run a border around the rooms, which came out beautiful, but transformed the flooring job from run of the mill carpentry into cabinet making, as the quarter round no longer covered the cut ends of the run. The cut ends butted up against the walnut, out in the open, so they had to be trimmed to the closest 64th.
Slowed down that job some. I’ll send some photos if you like, just to see what you can do to slow down things… Ha, ha. ;-)
Then I used the two flooring woods to front the bar between then Kitchen space and the Living room space, and did a mosaic of a Walnut wave breaking within the Hickory covering most of the bar. It came out really well, and I can’t do anything to the bar because it has “art” now.

After falling hard for the first time in my life (while not playing a contact sport) my note was trying to remind folks to use handrails. Slips, trips, and falls are a major component in folks self induced carnage. Always using handrail is a good rule of thumb for protection. Wish I had those snow chain booties on my shoe Saturday. I think I am alright, shoulder seems to be coming back together.

Hey, don’t steal Wonkette’s preferred jokes!
Also, regarding slips, trips, and falls – if you do fall and injure yourself, don’t hesitate to see the doctor when your wrist doesn’t get any better. How do I know? I was in to see my doctor for a med check and mentioned that my wrist was still sore a week later. She didn’t see anything, but the radiologist found a subtle fracture in one of the wrist bones. Now at 48 I get to have my first cast. Already itchy after just 2 days. And tomorrow I have to go to an AFB to inspect hangar trusses.

@Mart: Yeah, as I get older, I’m more uneasy about the dangers of falling. I’m in pretty good shape, and very active, but my night vision is worsening and my trifocal glasses require me to pay extra attention. I use those handrails. I also really appreciate steps (especially outdoor steps) that have some sort of marking on the edges (at the very least, on the bottom step). I think in some hotels (I can’t remember the last time I stayed at a hotel – I admit I don’t get out into wider society that much) have lines in hallways and on stairs that are fluorescent, so in case of power failure or fire, you can still find your way. That wouldn’t be a bad idea in homes, too, if it could be done in a way that isn’t visually obtrusive.
Mart, I’m glad your shoulder is getting better.

@Larkspur: After age 60, the doctors and nurses begin to ask in ominous tones: “Have you fallen recently?” This is how every check-up starts, as well as hospital visits, visits to specialists, physical therapy, etc.

John Cole, when your Yaktrax break (and they will), get yourself some Stabilicers – they will keep you upright a whole lot better than Yaktrax.
