For those who’d been wondering: The Trump fact-checking extension is now available for Firefox. https://t.co/qY6Qxt0hM3
— Philip Bump (@pbump) December 19, 2016
A little something to share with your Fox-addled relatives this holiday season, thank you so much Washington Post:
… We made a tool that slips a bit more context into Trump’s tweets. It’s still in the early stages, but our goal is to provide additional context where needed for Trump’s tweets moving forward (and a few golden oldies)…
[Get the extension for Chrome]
[Get the extension for Firefox]
Sometimes, we just add more context, like when Trump announced his pick of Rex Tillerson to serve as secretary of state. Curious for more info? It’s right there in the tweet now.
It takes a little while for the extension to update, so we’ll try to stay up to speed on fact-checking what Trump is tweeting, but it may take a few minutes. This is a work in progress, so don’t hesitate to offer feedback and thoughts.
And don’t hesitate to point to Trump tweets that could use a little explication. That’s the goal, after all.

Apart from helpful tools towards an enlightened citizenry, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

[email protected] I sent you an email with Mnem’s review last weekend, did you ever get it?

Maybe the good people at the WaPo could insert their Trump-check-App…up Chris Cilliza’s ample, useless, ass. While better than most of the MSM, WaPo needs to clean their own damn house, and put out a fact-check app against George Will, Jenny Rubin, Dickie Cohen and the rest of their useless stable of opinion columnists.
schrodingers_cat
@Bobby D: Actually Rubin has been pretty good this election season.
SiubhanDuinne
Spent the afternoon decorating a Christmas tree (not mine!) and have committed to spending Friday afternoon making cookies. I am not a cook, but my cousin (who is) has a broken arm, so I will be mixing and rolling and deep-frying and powdered-sugaring under her direction.
She (cousin) gave me an absolutely scrumptious gift today, a winter coat which had belonged to her mother (my elderly cousin who died two days before the election). The coat is gorgeous — multi-coloured with a dark brown (fake)-fur lining, or reversible so the whole thing is furry. It suits me perfectly. Now I need to hope for a spell of really cold weather in Atlanta to justify this beautiful garment!
Anyhow, the least I can do in return is take care of the cookie baking! If I come across any nifty recipes, I’ll share them :-)
Gvg
Rubin hates Trump and has been very blunt since the election and was pretty anti before. Now she is still a conservative so I have to say about a 1/3 of the time I don’t grok her point but sometimes I even agree with her. Very odd.
I think she may be more persuasive to other conservatives than I could ever be so I guess I approve. It seems a little weird sometimes though…I wonder what she is talking about.
Jeffro
@schrodingers_cat: seconded – and God help me I never thought I would be saying that at the start of 2016

I think this effort by the Washington Post goes in the “Better Late than Never” box. Still, good for them.
Our big evening activity just ended: bequeathed a futon to a friend and had a little furniture moving party.
eclare
@schrodingers_cat: I agree, she has been good. So glad I ditched the NYTimes and now get the Post.
kindness
Yea. The WaPo helped elect Trump. They think indirectly. I’m not so generous. But since they assisted putting the fool on his throne I’ll will use the rotted tomatoes the WaPo brings.
JMG
Had a pleasant chore this afternoon — buying the champagne for Christmas Eve and Christmas dinner hors d’oeuvres, which are always smoked salmon on toast points (I’m a WASP, can you guess?). I am eschewing politics until the 26th for sanity’s sake. I hope all of you here have a wonderful and Happy Holidays! There have always been more than one, unless New Year’s has been repealed.
Anyway, a little bacchanalia is always in order at this time of year. Go to it!
NotMax
@JMG
Naked salmon? No capers or thin, thin, thin sliced onion? Cream cheese dill dip to spread on the toast?
schrodingers_cat
@eclare: Same here! NYT is dead to me. Fuck them with MNgirl’s rusty pitchfork.

@efgoldman
House must smell especially fantastic.

@JMG: The longest night of the year has been my favorite holiday forevah!

The mere fact we have a septuagenarian president-elect whose inane tweets would embarrass an eighth grade boy makes me cringe and want to go psycho on the nearest GOP precinct chair.
NotMax
@efgoldman
Heh. Hot cocoa as payment for services rendered? ;)
@efgoldman
Could always import some usable material from here.

Rubin sometimes falls back on her training – it’s President Obama’s fault that the healthcare bill was not bipartisan, but more often I think she was kidnapped and impersonated by a liberal. She does hate It and has been very rude to Republican congresscritters she feels should stand up to It:
ETA: another quote from the article
mai naem mobile
@Zinsky: I actually think this is not going to end well for the GOP. It’s not going to end well for all non 1 percenters but I am going to enjoy watching my GOP neighbors living right next to me under the bridge. At least I will have a tent. They’ll be living in an empty cardboard box which was used to pack a made in mexico refrigerator

@efgoldman: oh yeah,Rubin was getting anti semitic stuff. Goldberg,I don’t know because I don’t see his stuff.

@NotMax: Is salmon really naked if it hides behind a veil of smoke?
Mnemosyne
Can’t talk. Emergency knitting. Though I’m making it in medium blue, not orange-pink or whatever that color is.
rikyrah
@efgoldman:
I can imagine the smell….Sigh…
Lalophobia
So…anything for someone who’s feeling so low that can’t see the point? I’m almost sure it’s being helped along by hormones but….
Renie
any one heard the latest on the inauguration entertainment? last i heard old drumpf was having trouble getting any decent artists to perform; that only 2 had agreed. nugent, obviously, and someone else i don’t recall.
Yarrow
@Renie: The runner-up of America’s Got Talent several years ago is singing the national anthem.
Omnes Omnibus
@Renie: I have made it a point of principle not to inquire.
SFAW
@efgoldman:
Tough though you are, I believe you need some backup. I can be down to your place in about 90 minutes, if need be.
SiubhanDuinne
@efgoldman:
Check your email.
SFAW
@Renie:
Kid Rock, that other intellectual giant. Of course, in his defense (not that I think he’s anything other than an asshole), at least he didn’t dodge the draft during Vietnam. But he had an excuse — he was under 5 years old when ‘Nam ended — something which chickenhawk pedophile racist motherfucker Nugent doesn’t/didn’t have.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Omnes Omnibus: This is a good point of principle.
BillinGlendaleCA
@SFAW:
You left out pants shitter.
ETA: I thought he was supposed to be in jail or dead. Why not dead Ted?
Lyrebird
@Lalophobia: I just played this “spread harmony” ad — and okay I am pretty anti-microsoft in buying habits — about five times: (click here) it’s got two elementary-school activists, the “ask a Muslim for a cookie” gal, and the guy that started the rescue boat for refugees crossing the Mediterranean, for starters.
Omnes Omnibus
@BillinGlendaleCA: I rather thought so.
Lyrebird
@efgoldman: I don’t want cookies, but I do want to apply for a job in RI. I think you guys live there? If I get a phone interview, could I email you somehow?
Omnes Omnibus
So I have purchased this for two soccer fans I know. At one penny plus shipping, it seemed worth it. It won’t arrive in time for X-mas, but late January should provide a good laugh.

Singing this or this?

Chris Cilizza is worse than useless.

@Omnes Omnibus: Did you see it’s Book 1 of 2 in the series?
Omnes Omnibus
@Steeplejack (tablet): I thought so. Imagine signing for that from UPS.
Omnes Omnibus
@Yarrow: Yes, that means the recipients could have it happen again. Muahahahaha!
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: You’ll have to splurge for Book 2 – $0.78.
BillinGlendaleCA
@efgoldman: Land of Fruit and Nuts.
Omnes Omnibus
@efgoldman: Yep. Rummy has myriad faults but chickenhawking isn’t one of them.
@Yarrow: The old drug dealer trick… Give an inexpensive taste and then sock it to you when you are hooked.
Major Major Major Major
@Yarrow: wish I could sell books for that much.

If the tech at the State Department has not improved much, in 8 years, I wonder if Rex Tillersoj will use his own email set-up? And would anybody in the MSM notice or care, if he did?
GregB
I think this kid just signed up to perform at the inauguration.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=29Mg6Gfh9Co
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: Yeah. They really have you hooked when they raise the price by that much.
@Major Major Major Major: Maybe you could. Have you tried it?
Omnes Omnibus
@gene108: Why would it matter as long as what he chose was safe and effective? Besides, there is the precedent of other SoS’s doing something similar.
Omnes Omnibus
@Yarrow: 780%? Damn straight.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Omnes Omnibus: I was told for the past two years that there was no sin greater.
Major Major Major Major
@Yarrow: no, but I used to do a webcomic that had enough of a following to sell shirts and zines.
Omnes Omnibus
@BillinGlendaleCA: But that was Hillary Clinton, not a qualified man who can make good decisions.

(Gonna try to remember to also put this in the morning thread. Apologies in advance for the repetition.)
DVR alert for TCM junkiies –
Friday, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern and wrapping up at 6:45 a.m. Saturday, six ‘Thin Man’ movies back-to-back.
On Saturday, two lesser known Christmas-themed feel good romantic comedies:
12:30 p.m. – It Happened on Fifth Avenue – Victor Moore struts his ‘infused with a slightly befuddled sagacity’ persona.
2:30 p.m. – Holiday Affair – a kinder, gentler Robert Mitchum
Yarrow
@Major Major Major Major: Wow. Why’d you stop?
@GregB: “Do you still think you can control them?”
@Omnes Omnibus: Just wait. That sort of percentage increase will seem like the good old days once Trump destroys our economy and our currency is devalued. I hope people have stocked up on wheelbarrows.

Omnes Omnibus
@Yarrow:
OTOH, I will be able to pay off my student loans with a potato.
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: Are potatoes the bartering good of choice for student loans? I know it’s chickens for doctors.
Lyrebird
@Omnes Omnibus:
And thank goodness for that! Meaning, in these times when “Irony, R.I.P.” memes are getting trite, and when any more pounding of one’s head against the wall might get you over the Chronic Whatsit Encephalopathy threshold, going weird is better than going insane.
Omnes Omnibus
@Yarrow: Downton Abbey says no.
Omnes Omnibus
@Lyrebird:
How does one tell the difference?
BillinGlendaleCA
@Yarrow: I don’t have a basement, but I do have an email server.
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: Can’t argue with that.
What item will be the bartering item of choice for gasoline? Need to stock up now.
BillinGlendaleCA

Omnes Omnibus
@Lizzy L: Won’t this be fun? If I won the lottery in the near future, I would park a shitload in Swiss Francs just to keep it safe.

@NotMax: It Happened on Fifth Avenue is a particular favorite. Charles Lane plays a landlord in a memorable cameo. That man was old when he was young.

Aleta
@Lalophobia: Since Nov., good music is the only thing that removes my pain for awhile, or else some word from friends. One thing today was Stayin’ Up Late by Ruthie Unger. Al Greene helps me. Sam Cooke, Bill Withers, Aretha. I don’t know what you like, but …. find something among the TED talks, or history podcasts and get warm, close eyes? There are some kinds of green tea, the more shade grown ones, that are high in theanine. If you live in a city you could try that. It should be fresh leaves and made at the right temp or else the effect isn’t there. There’s traditional things to eat with it that have a good mood effect. A few years ago during a bad time, impossible to overcome, I found some youtubes of thich nhat hanh that shifted my mood. I skipped around them until something rang a bell for me, rather than forcing myself to listen just for the sake of it. I’ve found that buying small but good presents to drop off somewhere for kids is helping me. There’s a couple of internet sites that ship free right now. Dropping off cat toys at a shelter. The Crown on Nflix is good when I can concentrate.
It feels like it won’t get better, but that changes. Someone here once told me ‘Remember to breathe’ ; that still helps, Take care.
BillinGlendaleCA

Dog Dawg Damn
So I’m reading that Trump team is contemplating an immediate 5% tariff on all imports.
http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/21/politics/donald-trump-tariffs/index.html
Since this lone measure will do absolutely nothing to revive manufacturing jobs and will ultimately just tax U.S. consumers for . . . no . . . reason . . . might there be an ulterior motive?
Is it possible the long game is to replace Income tax with Import Tariffs? Is that crazy-talk? When you want to cut income taxes and raise tariffs, isn’t that the outcome?
Omnes Omnibus
@efgoldman: They invented the cuckoo clock.
Omnes Omnibus
@efgoldman: Does this help? I do try to tamp it down, but, Jesus Fuck What The Hell For Fuck’s Sake!
BillinGlendaleCA
@Dog Dawg Damn: That’s the way they used to fund government before the income tax. They figured out 100 years ago that it was both insufficient and had perverse effects.
Aleta
@efgoldman: As a matter of fact, a (tea and) cookies song! by Ruth Ungar. The flip side is kinda funny, Mike Goes to the Mall.
Yarrow
@Lizzy L: I heard that, depending on what part of the country you live in, it’s apples, peaches or grapefruit for mortgages. Persimmons are for toiletries.
@Omnes Omnibus: The US has been the world’s reserve currency and safe haven. I don’t see that staying the same. Swiss Francs are probably safest.
Omnes Omnibus
@efgoldman: Odd. I’ve never liked any cover I have heard. The gruff baritone works for me. Our music snobbery may be different.
NotMax
@efgoldman
Something more holiday related, perhaps?
Aleta
@Dog Dawg Damn: That big speech clapping cue ‘Mexico will pay because import taxes’ … just who did they think would be paying?
BillinGlendaleCA
@Aleta: Mexico, of course.
ETA: Cause once it crosses the border, they slap a tax on it…wait a minute…SHIT!
Omnes Omnibus
@NotMax: Holiday related, you ask?
Aleta
@efgoldman: If it stays true that Obama has succeeded in weakening ISIL, it won’t be long before Tr takes the credit. I have to go turn the burner down under my blood now.
Aleta
@Omnes Omnibus: Deja vu all over again, that song.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Aleta: He said he had a secret plan.
NotMax
@Omnes Omnibus
Meh. Shining example of why one shouldn’t attempt singing when three sheets to the wind.
Omnes Omnibus
@Aleta: My parents did this shit when they were young. I resent having to do it again in my 50s.
BillinGlendaleCA
@NotMax: That’s the only time I used to sing, and damn, I sounded good.

@NotMax: Holiday related. Well, probably more than just related. There’s Christmas. And snow. And scantily dressed women.
Omnes Omnibus
@NotMax: A hermit speaks.

@efgoldman: We are both right.
Yarrow
@Major Major Major Major: Oh, that’s too bad. Sorry to hear that. I hope you are able to resume it at some point.

Weather Underground’s prediction for rain today was 0.12 inches, we’ve had 6/10 of an inch so far.
Yarrow
@BillinGlendaleCA: So that’s good? Don’t you need rain?
BillinGlendaleCA
@Yarrow: It’s excellent, yes, we need rain. Another storm is predicted for Friday.
Yarrow
@BillinGlendaleCA: How is the California drought going these days? I haven’t kept up on that lately.

@Major Major Major Major: Jealous! That’s the only Christmas album I’ve listened to this year.

BillinGlendaleCA
@ThresherK (tablet): Pikers, the best is The Kinks, Father Christmas.

I know you’re trying to be helpful, but i wouldn’t trust any “fact checking” program (not app) from Pravda on the Potomac. It’s likely to rate “Assad used chemical weapons” or “Russia hacked Hillary’s email server” as “TRUE.”
