Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Wednesday Evening Open Thread: Tweet-Check

For those who’d been wondering: The Trump fact-checking extension is now available for Firefox. https://t.co/qY6Qxt0hM3

— Philip Bump (@pbump) December 19, 2016

A little something to share with your Fox-addled relatives this holiday season, thank you so much Washington Post:

… We made a tool that slips a bit more context into Trump’s tweets. It’s still in the early stages, but our goal is to provide additional context where needed for Trump’s tweets moving forward (and a few golden oldies)…

[Get the extension for Chrome]

[Get the extension for Firefox]

Sometimes, we just add more context, like when Trump announced his pick of Rex Tillerson to serve as secretary of state. Curious for more info? It’s right there in the tweet now.

It takes a little while for the extension to update, so we’ll try to stay up to speed on fact-checking what Trump is tweeting, but it may take a few minutes. This is a work in progress, so don’t hesitate to offer feedback and thoughts.

And don’t hesitate to point to Trump tweets that could use a little explication. That’s the goal, after all.

************

Apart from helpful tools towards an enlightened citizenry, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

Maybe the good people at the WaPo could insert their Trump-check-App…up Chris Cilliza’s ample, useless, ass. While better than most of the MSM, WaPo needs to clean their own damn house, and put out a fact-check app against George Will, Jenny Rubin, Dickie Cohen and the rest of their useless stable of opinion columnists.

Spent the afternoon decorating a Christmas tree (not mine!) and have committed to spending Friday afternoon making cookies. I am not a cook, but my cousin (who is) has a broken arm, so I will be mixing and rolling and deep-frying and powdered-sugaring under her direction.

She (cousin) gave me an absolutely scrumptious gift today, a winter coat which had belonged to her mother (my elderly cousin who died two days before the election). The coat is gorgeous — multi-coloured with a dark brown (fake)-fur lining, or reversible so the whole thing is furry. It suits me perfectly. Now I need to hope for a spell of really cold weather in Atlanta to justify this beautiful garment!

Anyhow, the least I can do in return is take care of the cookie baking! If I come across any nifty recipes, I’ll share them :-)

Rubin hates Trump and has been very blunt since the election and was pretty anti before. Now she is still a conservative so I have to say about a 1/3 of the time I don’t grok her point but sometimes I even agree with her. Very odd.
I think she may be more persuasive to other conservatives than I could ever be so I guess I approve. It seems a little weird sometimes though…I wonder what she is talking about.

Had a pleasant chore this afternoon — buying the champagne for Christmas Eve and Christmas dinner hors d’oeuvres, which are always smoked salmon on toast points (I’m a WASP, can you guess?). I am eschewing politics until the 26th for sanity’s sake. I hope all of you here have a wonderful and Happy Holidays! There have always been more than one, unless New Year’s has been repealed.

Rubin sometimes falls back on her training – it’s President Obama’s fault that the healthcare bill was not bipartisan, but more often I think she was kidnapped and impersonated by a liberal. She does hate It and has been very rude to Republican congresscritters she feels should stand up to It:

This is surely the most cowardly group of lawmakers in American history. They are afraid people will harass them online?! Good grief, if journalists took that attitude, no one would be left to write or edit real news.

ETA: another quote from the article

Candidly, people this weak and fearful shouldn’t hold public office. If they don’t have the nerve to stand up for their own beliefs (if they have them) and their own constituents, they should find another line of work.

@Lalophobia: Since Nov., good music is the only thing that removes my pain for awhile, or else some word from friends. One thing today was Stayin’ Up Late by Ruthie Unger. Al Greene helps me. Sam Cooke, Bill Withers, Aretha. I don’t know what you like, but …. find something among the TED talks, or history podcasts and get warm, close eyes? There are some kinds of green tea, the more shade grown ones, that are high in theanine. If you live in a city you could try that. It should be fresh leaves and made at the right temp or else the effect isn’t there. There’s traditional things to eat with it that have a good mood effect. A few years ago during a bad time, impossible to overcome, I found some youtubes of thich nhat hanh that shifted my mood. I skipped around them until something rang a bell for me, rather than forcing myself to listen just for the sake of it. I’ve found that buying small but good presents to drop off somewhere for kids is helping me. There’s a couple of internet sites that ship free right now. Dropping off cat toys at a shelter. The Crown on Nflix is good when I can concentrate.

It feels like it won’t get better, but that changes. Someone here once told me ‘Remember to breathe’ ; that still helps, Take care.

So I’m reading that Trump team is contemplating an immediate 5% tariff on all imports.

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/21/politics/donald-trump-tariffs/index.html

The Trump transition team is floating the possibility of an early executive action to impose tariffs on foreign imports, according to multiple sources.

Since this lone measure will do absolutely nothing to revive manufacturing jobs and will ultimately just tax U.S. consumers for . . . no . . . reason . . . might there be an ulterior motive?

Is it possible the long game is to replace Income tax with Import Tariffs? Is that crazy-talk? When you want to cut income taxes and raise tariffs, isn’t that the outcome?
