Somebody — was it hovercraft? Can’t remember — linked to this in a comment yesterday. The onions and the dust in my place! Floods of tears, but tears of gratitude that not all people are shit, at least not all the time. Thanks for giving it a front-page profile.
Emma
There’s a lot of smoke in the air today, right? That must be why my eyes are tearing…
SiubhanDuinne
Don’t know whether it was mentioned in an earlier thread, but just saw that Carrie Fisher is in critical condition following a cardiac episode earlier today.
2016 wouldn’t fuck around with Princess Leia, would it?
She’s a smart, funny, complex woman. Heard her interviewed a week or two ago on “Fresh Air” and was more impressed than I would have expected. I wish her a full and swift recovery.

Amazon has a rent a movie for $1 all day. I went with the latest Jason Bourne.

I’m sorry that Trump wasn’t at his hotel to see that.

Damnit…
I’m beginning to believe that the gods of 2016 knew what was coming November 8 & have been taking our big icons…in preparation
Sending love and light to Carrie Fisher and her family…

Any word from Amir on a thread I didn’t read all of? If not, can someone frontpage a request for him to check in just in case a post might get to him where all the comments won’t?
Baud
@Shalimar: Yes. He’s good. Morning thread.
Shalimar
@Baud: thanks
Elizabelle
@SiubhanDuinne: It’s not sounding good. Unresponsive when taken off the plane, possibly without sufficient oxygen for an extended period. On a ventilator now.
My guess is that it’s so family and friends can come and say goodbye. And if her brain was so oxygen depleted, who wants to survive that anyway?
Hopes and prayers for her, and hope that I am wrong about the severity.
SiubhanDuinne
@Shalimar:
Yup. I exchanged emails with him last evening, posted much of his response on the morning thread. He’s fine, busy, in the midst of moving so he’s mostly just lurking at the moment, but is following both BJ doings and the larger picture of what we’re all facing come January 20th. He says “hi” to everyone and is grateful for the concern.

I was going to watch The Secret Life of Pets, but changed my mind. Afraid it might be too close to home. I’d rather not know.

@SiubhanDuinne: You are great to be on Amir watch!

@SiubhanDuinne:
I read she was unresponsive when they took her off the plane, that is not a hopeful sign. She deserves a much better future. I was indifferent to her after the movies but once I read her books grew very fond of her. This shitty shitty year can stop now

@debbie: He wouldn’t understand it.

Interesting list. Some I did not even know existed.

@Elizabelle:
This fucking year. After I posted my comment, I saw that she had gone a long time (15+ minutes) without oxygen, so I’m guessing you’re right.
When I was a little girl I adored Debbie Reynolds (who has had her own health challenges in recent years). I feel desperately sorry for her. No parent should ever be faced with a seriously ill/dying child.
SiubhanDuinne
@Elizabelle:
Only that I happened to have his email address buried deep in my contacts list. I had occasion to ask him about some points of Muslim etiquette at a baby-naming ceremony I attended several years ago and because of a particular demitroll who was active at the time, I chose not to ask my questions on the open BJ forum (today I would, no question). Anyhow, since I had his email, I just shot him a quick message last night saying we were thinking about him.
I do like the way members of this strange jackal-infested community look out for each other when things get dicey.

@lamh36: I agree with this assessment and add that the losses weren’t all of the iconic variety.
In happier news, my brother is in town for a week. Good times shall be had.
One more week and 2016 can be sent where it belongs.

@SiubhanDuinne: Thank you so much for doing this, and Amir, if you are reading, glad you are OK.

@SiubhanDuinne: You have some mad networking skillz.
Carrie Fisher’s French bulldog, Gary, was on the flight with her. He’s at the hospital now, too.
Yeah, what is this? A creative Rapture? (Admittedly, some of the lost stars lived long lives — looking at you, Leonard Cohen. But still creating. That is to be wished for.)

@lamh36:
Earl Gray was my attorney years ago on a civil matter. Since then he has become very well known for taking very unpopular defendants. He is very very good and very very smart, if he thinks his cop can do better under a different judge my guess is he is right and he has his ‘I’s’ dotted.
I admire his skills but I do not wish him luck with this guy.
BTW – our daughter went to school with the shooter and was pretty upset when she heard what he did. They were not friends but she knew him well enough to be concerned about him.
Edit: by ‘concerned’I mean for his well being, not that he was a monster in high school. SHe said he seemed like a very decent guy.

@SiubhanDuinne:
I did not see that she was without O2 for that amount of time. Just that the plane was 15 minutes from the airport. I would think the EMT on board was administering CPR, so she may not have been oxygen deprived. It may be she has a too damaged heart or threw a clot (common on planes, I believe). In which case, the 15 minutes are irrelevant. My dad died from a massive heart attack and he was taken to the hospital within 15 minutes, getting CPR from the ambulance crew the whole way. The doctors told us that a two second response time would not have made a difference. He didn’t technically die until an hour or so after arriving at the hospital, but he was essentially dead before he hit the ground.

@CaseyL:
I used to drink Earl Grey tea. Does that count?
Mike J
In other cardiac news, my mom last went in the hospital the night before Thanksgiving with a pericardial effusion following an aortic valve replacement two weeks before. Having her last check in with the heart surgeon today, and started experiencing chest pains. They took her to the ER, say she’ll be in at least overnight.
I am not buying any more turkeys to cook. Every time I get one, something bad happens.

Has there been a more difficult year in our collective lifetimeshere’s hoping all and sundry are able to eke out a bit of peace, love and understanding.
But, jeez, why so fucking hard?

Carrie Fisher???? WTF, 2016? WTF!!! i hate this year.

@CaseyL: It’s true. Earl Grey is my favorite tea.

@lamh36: I don’t understand why everyone is so impatient for 2016 to end. Aside from November this year wasn’t all that bad. This Spring is bound to be awful.

@debbie: If I believed that Shitgibbon would feel anything by seeing that…I wouldn’t wake up every morning afraid. He has no feelings…at least not as we humans describe them.

@geg6: I’m sorry for what you went through. Losing a loved one with such little notice is even more horrible than just plain losing the loved one.

@Mike J:
Sorry to hear that, I hope she’s okay and able to go home tomorrow.

@Mike J: Jesus Christ, I cannot recall another shitass year like 2016 has been. Most New Year’s Eves I’ve been a little sad to see the New Year come. Not this year. I’ll be wishing this one would get the hell over, and it’s even longer because we’ve got a goddammed leap second at 00:00 UT on Dec 31.
Schlemazel
@CaseyL:
I thought it was weird I had a link to both parties there
Spanky
@Elizabelle: Maybe it depends on your life outlook, but for me losing someone suddenly has been miles better than watching someone slowly slip away, and I’ve had a number of both varieties. None yet in 2016, but the year ain’t done with us yet. Oh no Precious, it is not.

@Jinchi: Speak for yourself. I went to more funerals in the first half of 2016 than I’ve gone to in the last decade. This year has been awful.
SiubhanDuinne
@laura:
Well, for me personally, 1999 was The Year of the Funerals. I lost my beloved aunt, my ex-husband (with whom I had remained close), two dear dear friends, and at least two people who were what you might call “good acquaintances.” I got to the point where I cringed every time the phone rang because it was bad news as often as not.
But except for Mel Tormé, I don’t remember it as being appreciably worse than any other year for prominent/iconic deaths. (I’m sure if I looked up a list I’d be shocked at both the numbers and the prominence of those who passed in 1999 — I’m just going by my own memories and experience of the year.)

@geg6:
My Dad had a heart attack over twenty years ago, but it wasn’t a massive one, when we arrived at the ER, they said it was just in time, fortunately, he survived and was with us for another 20 years. It still got him in the end though, technically he died from congestive heart failure, but it was that heart attack that damaged his heart. Alzheimer’s didn’t help, his frantic walking marathons to get back “there” were very damaging given his heart condition.
SiubhanDuinne
@Spanky:
It is just like 2016 to drag things out like that.

@geg6: So very sorry for your loss. It’s a terrible thing to lose someone so suddenly. Sad to say that even now, I’ve not fully come to terms with it. I’m very glad my brother is here, cannot imagine what I’d be going through otherwise.
Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant)

That Amir guy sure is popular.
I can’t deal with the sad right this moment, so let me just say I’m reading Bryan Cranston’s memoir A Life in Parts and enjoying it a lot. Very smart man, and funny.
