Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Not all heroes wear capes.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

In my day, never was longer.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Republicans in disarray!

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Everybody saw this coming.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

    Somebody — was it hovercraft? Can’t remember — linked to this in a comment yesterday. The onions and the dust in my place! Floods of tears, but tears of gratitude that not all people are shit, at least not all the time. Thanks for giving it a front-page profile.

    Don’t know whether it was mentioned in an earlier thread, but just saw that Carrie Fisher is in critical condition following a cardiac episode earlier today.

    2016 wouldn’t fuck around with Princess Leia, would it?

    She’s a smart, funny, complex woman. Heard her interviewed a week or two ago on “Fresh Air” and was more impressed than I would have expected. I wish her a full and swift recovery.

    @SiubhanDuinne: It’s not sounding good. Unresponsive when taken off the plane, possibly without sufficient oxygen for an extended period. On a ventilator now.

    My guess is that it’s so family and friends can come and say goodbye. And if her brain was so oxygen depleted, who wants to survive that anyway?

    Hopes and prayers for her, and hope that I am wrong about the severity.

He’s fine, busy, in the midst of moving so he’s mostly just lurking at the moment, but is following both BJ doings and the larger picture of what we’re all facing come January 20th. He says “hi” to everyone and is grateful for the concern.

    @TheRoot
    Attorneys for the officer who shot #PhilandoCastile have removed the black judge who was assigned to the case:

    According to the report, the notice to remove Ramsey County District Court Judge Edward Wilson was filed Thursday, citing a rule of the state’s criminal procedure that allows defense or prosecuting attorneys to ask for the removal of one assigned judge per case, without having to give any reason. Normally, those requests are automatically granted, the Tribune notes.

    “We did our research, and based on our research, we chose to remove him,” Earl Gray, one of Yanez’s attorneys told the Tribune. “We felt we had to remove him. Simple as that.”

    The Tribune notes that Gray has tried a case before Wilson before.

    @Elizabelle:

    Only that I happened to have his email address buried deep in my contacts list. I had occasion to ask him about some points of Muslim etiquette at a baby-naming ceremony I attended several years ago and because of a particular demitroll who was active at the time, I chose not to ask my questions on the open BJ forum (today I would, no question). Anyhow, since I had his email, I just shot him a quick message last night saying we were thinking about him.

    I do like the way members of this strange jackal-infested community look out for each other when things get dicey.

    Earl Gray was my attorney years ago on a civil matter. Since then he has become very well known for taking very unpopular defendants. He is very very good and very very smart, if he thinks his cop can do better under a different judge my guess is he is right and he has his ‘I’s’ dotted.

    I admire his skills but I do not wish him luck with this guy.

    BTW – our daughter went to school with the shooter and was pretty upset when she heard what he did. They were not friends but she knew him well enough to be concerned about him.

    Edit: by ‘concerned’I mean for his well being, not that he was a monster in high school. SHe said he seemed like a very decent guy.

    @SiubhanDuinne:

    I did not see that she was without O2 for that amount of time. Just that the plane was 15 minutes from the airport. I would think the EMT on board was administering CPR, so she may not have been oxygen deprived. It may be she has a too damaged heart or threw a clot (common on planes, I believe). In which case, the 15 minutes are irrelevant. My dad died from a massive heart attack and he was taken to the hospital within 15 minutes, getting CPR from the ambulance crew the whole way. The doctors told us that a two second response time would not have made a difference. He didn’t technically die until an hour or so after arriving at the hospital, but he was essentially dead before he hit the ground.

Having her last check in with the heart surgeon today, and started experiencing chest pains. They took her to the ER, say she’ll be in at least overnight.

    Well, for me personally, 1999 was The Year of the Funerals. I lost my beloved aunt, my ex-husband (with whom I had remained close), two dear dear friends, and at least two people who were what you might call “good acquaintances.” I got to the point where I cringed every time the phone rang because it was bad news as often as not.

    But except for Mel Tormé, I don’t remember it as being appreciably worse than any other year for prominent/iconic deaths. (I’m sure if I looked up a list I’d be shocked at both the numbers and the prominence of those who passed in 1999 — I’m just going by my own memories and experience of the year.)

    My Dad had a heart attack over twenty years ago, but it wasn’t a massive one, when we arrived at the ER, they said it was just in time, fortunately, he survived and was with us for another 20 years. It still got him in the end though, technically he died from congestive heart failure, but it was that heart attack that damaged his heart. Alzheimer’s didn’t help, his frantic walking marathons to get back “there” were very damaging given his heart condition.
