Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let’s finish the job.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

I really should read my own blog.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Second rate reporter says what?

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

White supremacy is terrorism.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This blog will pay for itself.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Women’s March On (Your City Here): Let’s Meet-Up

by TaMara|  January 5, 20171:00 pm| 113 Comments

This post is in: Meetups and social events, Women's Rights Are Human Rights

FacebookTweetEmail

When Betty posted this morning about attending the Women’s March on Washington, I saw there were a lot of people going to local marches. There is one in Denver:

Women’s March on Denver

January 21, 2017
9 am – 3 pm
Denver’s Civic Center Park
Marching in Solidarity for Human Rights…
Sponsored by Women, For Everyone!

Any Colorado folk want to do a meet-up for the march. Even if I can’t make it, I’ll help organize it.

Why don’t we use this thread to see if we there is any interest for meetups in other cities.

And I’m hoping Betty C and anyone else going to the marches will live blog/tweet their adventures – or at least provide photos after the fact.

A suggestion going around the Raleigh marchers is to wear your zip code across your back. We’ve had so many protests dismissed as “people bused in from California” that we want a definite statement of “We’re locals!”

I am probably going to the Denver march. There are a number of busses coming from the northern suburbs, and there is a bus being brought up from Colorado Springs to get us if there is enough interest to fill the additional bus so I am waiting to get confirmation that I have a place on the bus.

@O. Felix Culpa: Not to derail the thread into a discussion of my bowels, but yes…the irony of “the procedure” being scheduled around Inauguration Day has not been lost on me. It was more or less deliberate, not as a commentary on the Inauguration per se but to make sure that I got it while it was still covered as an essential procedure by the ACA.

@ArchTeryx: Dozens? Dear God. You have all my sympathy. Unless you’re doing them for fun, as Martin suggests, in which case, uh.. //

WASHINGTON – Top U.S. intelligence officials say Russia poses a major and growing threat to U.S. government, military, diplomatic and commercial operations – as well as America’s critical infrastructure.

National Intelligence Director James Clapper and other intelligence officials are testifying at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing focused on Russia’s meddling in the U.S. presidential election. They say Russia is among at least 30 nations that are developing capabilities to launch cyberattacks.

President-elect Donald Trump has expressed skepticism that Russia was behind the election hacking.

    U.S. intelligence agencies disagree.

The officials aren’t expected to disclose details of a report on foreign influence in U.S. elections before President Barack Obama gets a briefing on that report Thursday.

This is how my local news tv station website is spinning it. I expect the comment section to be flooded in a few hours by conservatives saying “I don’t see the problem. Russia helped educate the electorate so they could choose wisely.”

I often wonder why I read the comments on my local news websites.

Frank Rich is brutal. I thought he was a theater critic?

How much longer will he be able to outrun these questions?

I’d say about three more weeks. Of course he’ll always be able to outrun some questions. We are never going to see Trump’s tax returns. We are never going to know the new First Lady’s immigration history. (Or we won’t unless and until someone in the federal bureaucracy is sufficiently provoked to leak.) But once he’s in the White House, he will no longer be able to punt by making the empty promise that “I’ll get back to you by Tuesday” on his plans to, say, address the next Hurricane Katrina or government shutdown or economic cataclysm or foreign threat. He actually will be held accountable by voters, including maybe even the minority of Americans who voted for him on Election Day. Bluffing won’t do in a crisis, tweets won’t do — only action will do. And it seems that he has no idea that producing concrete action in Washington is not as simple as picking up the phone and browbeating a frightened corporate wuss at Carrier, Boeing, or Ford to save a pittance of American jobs.

    Whew!

I admit I mostly lurking here, but seeing all these marches scheduled makes my heart swell. And to see there’s a march in Mexico makes it even better. I hope there are marches worldwide. It’s a beautiful thing. I’ll be doing my part in Pittsburgh as well.

    Let’s keep it up!!

@KarenH:I’m in the northeast corner and don’t know my way around San Antonio very well yet, but we can meet somewhere or I can find you. I’ll need to make sure i have arrangements for animal care and such. I’m out of town right now, but I’ll check into it when I get back next week. Email me if you like through one of the front pagers with your plans and I’ll see what I can work out.

@BCHS Class of 1980: Thanks to your post, I just signed up for the St. Pete March. A few days ago, I searched for something close enough but did not find the “sister marches.”
Someone in a different thread said something about BJ folks carrying green balloons so we could recognize each other. Maybe that’s a thing we could do.

There’s one in Toronto, Ontario, St. Catherines, Ontario, and Buffalo, NY. St. Catherines is closest to me, but my sister-in-law and I are considering crossing the border to go to the one in Buffalo. Resist!

Colonoscopies (I’ve had one) are a breeze because they zonk you out, and you kind of drift dreamily through the whole thing. Sigmoidoscopies (I’ve had two) are BAD: It’s a less invasive procedure, so they don’t drug you at all. Count on six or seven minutes of extreme discomfort. The fact that it’s a type of pain I’d never felt before was only mildly distracting. But when it’s over, it’s over. No after-effects at all.

As for drinking The Stuff, I made a huge mistake and watched “Back to the Future III” while going through the process. As a result everything about that movie now disgusts me. (Fortunately the first two flicks remain unaffected.)

@ms_canadada: Thank you. I just saw on our local news that Buffalo Resistance organized a protest outside the fundraising event held for Trump today in downtown Buffalo, which was attended by Kellyanne Conway. That was nice to see.
I see on the Buffalo Resistance Twitter feed that they do have marches planned for January 21st. I can’t attend because I work Saturdays but I’m glad to see there is something going on in my area. I’m hoping to make it to the Erie County Democratic Committee meeting on 1/23.

    @sempronia:

I would like to go to the San Jose one also. Since San Jose starts at 10, and the SF one is at 4 pm, I might be able to make both. I think I will need a lot of chances to scream that weekend.

I’ll find a green balloon to wear, if that will make it easier to meet up.

I will be at Boston, wearing my Pussy Hat. My knitting group is knitting hats to wear. I have some violently hot pink yarn with reflective thread running through it – I will be like deer’s eyes in car headlights, only pink.

I have more pink yarn, so if anyone wanted one to wear to Boston, we could meet up beforehand.
