Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

This fight is for everything.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Come on, man.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Has anyone met a Marine who does crossfit who is also a vegan? Because that would be the single most annoying person in the world.

WTF on the Chargers moving to Los Angeles? I thought they might move, but to Los Angeles?

L.A. didn’t even care about the Chargers when they were without a team for 20-years and only 110 miles away.

Mater Dei High School probably has a larger L.A. fan base than the Chargers.

Some folks think Trump is “blackmail proof” because we already know so much, but he clearly thinks there’s some damning secret in his taxes.
Could financial information have been purloined from Trump’s lawyers or accountants? From a bank he works with? Maybe it’s all impregnable.

I, of course, oppose all manner of leaks and hacking, so I really hope there’s no latter day George Smiley planning something with understated, scholarly ruthlessness.

Hice replaced Paul Braun in our district. I thought you might like to read this post about a town hall his reps had tonight.

I attended a Jody Hice event at the Golden Corral in Winder tonight. Understand, I’m extremely cynical about getting into any sort of debate with anyone on the right side of the political spectrum, much less one of their lackeys. BUT, there was something empowering about being in a room of people (specifically, angry women) who where there to stand their ground on a unified cause. Everyone in the room was upset about Obamacare’s demise—and the lack of a plan to replace it—and young Ben got an earful.
So, what’s the takeaway? Well, first, there is still value in face-to-face conversations with politicians. Second, there is value in mobilizing a group (or, at least, taking a buddy) to bombard the representative with questions. Third, there’s value in personal stories and restraint in your hatred — basically, once you start popping off, you start to lose them. And fourth, do your homework. Because if your representative voted against something, you want to be able to call them out on that.
What to avoid? Yelling. Asking questions that don’t have to do with the elected official’s capacity—stick to their voting record and statements they’ve made. And if you don’t have the representative in the room, skip the question and go right for a statement—”If it weren’t for Obamacare, I wouldn’t have a beautiful baby boy.”
Jody Hice’s “representatives” have two more public meetings planned: 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Tennille (Washington County) and 10 a.m.-noon in Gibson (Glasscock County). These places are far from Athens and I think it’s funny that Hice doesn’t even bother to show up, but if you can swing it, know that there IS value in showing up to these things and voicing your opinion.

So, by way of debriefing, as this is an open thread that seems to have gotten a bit dark, some may recall that I was planning to make one of these for dinner on Dec 25th (vegetarians and vegans should just skip this post.) We did. It was fucking awesome. I highly recommend this – follow the instructions exactly, and it comes out perfectly, looking exactly like the photos. My oven seems to be a bit slow, so in the end it took pretty close to 5 hours. N.B. – if you’re using a meat thermometer, take it out before the “crisping” step. I failed to do so and it melted.

This dish is probably not recommended if you have cholesterol issues.

Sure, they’re trying to pretend it isn’t real because it doesn’t match their world view and they probably voted for Trump and don’t like feeling like they’ve been duped. Native San Diegans loathe and despise Los Angeles and all its works. For Spanos to take the team to LA….

I am a lifelong Charger fan. Since 1978. I have lived and died with the Chargers since I was 11 years old. I was one of the 80,000 who welcomed them back after the 1994 AFC Championship Game, after they defeated the Steelers on the road. I drove to the stadium honking and cheering and waving. I had season tickets.

They are dead to me. Fuck them.

    This.

I only lived in San Diego for about 4-years, but that was long enough to learn that Los Angelans don’t give a rat’s patootie about any San Diego team and vice versa. And there’s no affinity for the Chargers’ one season of history there 55-years ago.

They’ll struggle to fill the 30,000 seat venue of the L.A. Galaxy where they’re thinking about playing until the Inglewood complex is finished.

I used to right grant proposals for funding from the EPA. Being from West Virginia, I'm especially picky about speling and grammar, because people from elsewhere sometimes think hillbillies are ignorant, or even stupid.

So I always went over the material I wrote after letting it lay for a while, which helps. Then I had two coworkers (MBA and math major) go over the docs, and then passed by my boss, just in case. Some years it was actually clean. But over the years, the guidance doc required more and more detail, and my output got bigger and bigger, with more charts and spreadsheets.

So eventually I found a stoopid error in a prominent spot in the grant app, which asked for over a million dollar !!!!! But I got the bucks, whatever.

Now I'm retired, it's been 8 years going on 9 since I sent one of those in. No more responsibility for other people's money. So glad I don't make those typographical errors no more!!
