Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

The willow is too close to the house.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Everybody saw this coming.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

We still have time to mess this up!

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Bogus polls are all they’ve got left. Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls a year from now.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Cole is on a roll !

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Republicans in disarray!

We’re not going back!

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Putin dreamed of ending NATO, and now it’s Finnish-ed.

Let there be snark.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

… as the Dumbest Mean Legislator / Meanest Dumb Legislator in DC. Sure, Donald Trump has the advantage of being born with a gilt-plated spoon in his mouth (and he never risks being confused with Rep. Pete ‘IRA Mucker’ King). But when it comes to world-class vicious stupidity, STEVE KING WILL NOT BE IGNORED!!!

I guess if you assume the real American voter is a cruel, ignorant bigot wholly in thrall to megacorporate filth producers, Iowa really deserves its premier spot in the quadrennial presidential race.

A Scottish newspaper had this to say about the upcoming week’s TV highlights. http://www.heraldscotland.com/arts_ents/15024376.Damien_Love__39_s_TV_highlights/

    President Trump: The Inauguration

    4pm, BBC One/ STV

After a long absence, The Twilight Zone returns with one of the most ambitious, expensive and controversial productions in broadcast history. Sci-fi writers have dabbled often with alternative history stories – among the most common is the “What If The Nazis Had Won The Second World War” setting – but this huge interactive virtual reality project, which will unfold on TV, in the press, and on Twitter over the next four years, sets out to build an ongoing alternative present. The story begins in a nightmarish version of 2017 in which huge sections of the US electorate have somehow been duped into voting to make Donald Trump president. It sounds far-fetched, and it is, but as it goes on it becomes more and more chillingly plausible. Today’s feature-length opener concentrates on the gaudy inauguration of President Trump, and the stirrings of protest and despair surrounding the ceremony, while pundits speculate gravely on what lies ahead. It’s a flawed piece, but a disturbing glimpse of the horrors we could stumble into, if we’re not careful.

Well, it’s been a fun few days for family dmsilev, that’s for sure, but thankfully things seem to be stabilizing. Mom is looking at a couple of months of physiotherapy for a cracked pelvis and while chemo for my dad is certainly no walk in the park, the particular strain he has is both treatable and well localized, so we’re optimistic at this point.

@SiubhanDuinne: I would as well. As to not being the audience for his fiction, I confess to a longstanding argument with myself over reading his stuff I don’t care for (the horror genre, I guess it is) because I so enjoy the way he writes; I find his ability to create scenes and tap his characters’ inner selves very evocative. I believe he was the author of a recent short story, “Herman Wouk Is Still Alive,” in The New Yorker, I think it was. A riveting piece. The man seems to understand those who have nothing, and the way our circumstances and our choices may confine and define us, our lives. We need that level of empathy in our elected officials.

Well, his early books (Salem’s Lot, The Shining) scared the bejesus out of me, so they were certainly effective! But I don’t like being terrified, so I stay away. Made an exception for The Stand and found it just deadly, no pun intended. Turgid, both dull and overwrought. And I watched the TV movie of “The Lavaliers” and thought it was simply ridiculous.

But I have no quarrel with those who love and admire his writing. De gustibus and all that.

And I would be delighted if he ran against Collins. Be cool to have both Senators from Maine named King :-)

Has anyone seen the show Brain Dead? It’s available on Amazon Prime right now, although I guess it’s network life was cut short. My husband and I are about halfway through it, and I feel like Steve King is represented by a character played by Tony Shalhoub, Red Wheatus. He starts off as an amiable drunk, but he becomes a much sharper and hard working right-winger when his brain is invaded by alien ants. If Red were worried about Mexican illegal immigration, he would totally have a wall model on his desk.
