Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Somebody needs to explain to DeSantis that nobody needs to do anything to make him look bad.

This really is a full service blog.

I desperately hope that, yet again, I am wrong.

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

There’s always a light at the end of the frog.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

When we show up, we win.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Let’s show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Awesome:

“Honey, I’m going on Fox to announce that my biker gang of meatheads will be private security for Trump and bash any protestors that get ‘unruly.’ What should I wear?”

“I dunno, babe. Probably anything but brown. Literally anything but a brown shirt.”

Bonus hilarity- that is Chris Cox, head of Bikers for Trump, who is a “chainsaw artist.”

Smart move having brown shirted bikers providing security at a March that will be mostly women and some kids … what could go wrong ??

Look, I’m Jewish, my dad was an American airman for WWII and Korea, and I grew up katy-cornered from folks with numbers tattoed into their arms. This shit is NOT funny.

We have bikers who provide security for funerals (when those asswipes from Kansas show up), but they wear black. Like people in mourning.

That being said, I’ll still be at Boston’s March next week, after I see WarriorGirl through her 9:30 class.

The predecessors to the Sturmabteilung (“brownshirts”) were the Freikorps of 1918-20 or so…..I feel very much like we are in that moment here. The Freikorps used to tell folks they had to commit violence in the streets in order to, you know, stop violence in the streets.

I will be on that march Jan 21 with my wife & a couple of my (adult) children. Screw the bikers.

“Bikers for Trump” plays well to Trump’s base – so I expect it’s marketing. One wonders whether they’ll have some amateur pro wrestlers dressed up as hippies to pretend to attack the bikers near the Fox News cameras before gigging* themselves and falling to the ground, vanquished by the Trumpistas. People so eager to see “false flag” operations everywhere must be thinking about using the tactic themselves.

    * I had a co-worker that was training to be a pro wrestler – some of them had concealed sharp objects that they’d use to put small cuts on their foreheads that bleed spectacularly – he called it “gigging.”

I’m not a biker, per se, but I ride a lot of miles with guys who wear a patch. Including a few retired officers of biker clubs that wouldn’t let this idiot prospect for them at any time, ever. Bikers for Trump can crow about protecting Trump at the inauguration all they want…but nobody wearing a patch would be caught dead harming women and children during the march the day after. The hard core bikers may be brutal to other male patch holders, but women and children are pretty much off limits. And this douche knows it.

@Coin operated: From the WaPo story the man appears to have a political agenda of keeping the National Parks and monuments open during government shutdowns. If I’m not mistaken the House gutting of the regulatory agencies pretty much makes just the opposite likely to occur.

The bill modifies the Administrative Procedure Act, which was passed in 1946, and represented a compromise between New Deal Democrats and free-market Republicans. It sanctioned the power of government agencies like the National Labor Relations Board or the Federal Communications Commission to regulate the private market, but required public hearings on proposed rulings and court suits to overturn regulations.

The Supreme Court ruled in 1984 that the courts could only overturn rulings that were “arbitrary and capricious, an abuse of discretion.” In other words, the courts would have to defer to the regulatory agencies in finding whether a ruling was justified. But the Republicans in the House passed a law that would allow the courts to rule without giving deference to the regulatory agencies. A Republican court could, for instance, overrule decisions of the Food and Drug Administration or the Environmental Protection Agency on concocted Constitutional grounds – say, by arguing that it violated the “takings” clause of the Constitution. That could cripple the regulatory agencies.

    Imagine that.
