Institutional momentum is a hell of a thing. Even desiccated institutions that have proved too hollow to perform the functions for which they were designed — e.g., to prevent an unstable, unqualified puppet of a foreign power from ascending to the office of the U.S. presidency — have a heft that keeps them rolling in their well-worn grooves toward a predetermined destination.

That’s why, though we can hope for deus ex machina in the form of a CIA bombshell, etc., we will almost certainly see Putin’s poodle sworn in as POTUS at noon this Friday, with most Democratic lawmakers in attendance. That’s when the real work of the resistance will begin.

But in the meantime, between calling our reps to try to save the ACA, I don’t see why we can’t have a little fun at the expense of the brittle narcissist who is almost certainly furious at the prospect of his inaugural becoming a very public flop that is insufficiently staffed by celebrities and attended by citizens.

How bad is it? We know Trump has been unable to get A-list celebrities to perform, even after reportedly dangling ambassadorships to sweeten the pot for talent bookers. When that failed, he stomped sour grapes on Twitter: “The so-called ‘A’ list celebrities are all wanting tixs [sic] to the inauguration, but look what they did for Hillary, NOTHING. I want the PEOPLE!”

But it’s looking like “the PEOPLE,” who previously expressed that they don’t want Trump by giving his opponent nearly three million more votes, are now staying away from the inauguration in droves. That apparently compelled Trump himself to hawk tickets via video on Twitter yesterday (and his team to place banner ads all over the web today), less than a week out. Via the site linked from the inaugural ticket infomercial:

On Friday, January 20, we celebrate a new day for America as Donald J. Trump and Michael R. Pence are sworn in as President and Vice President of the United States. Because you played such an important role in our movement to Make America Great Again, President-elect Trump wants to personally invite you to the Inaugural Welcome Concert and Inaugural Swearing-In Ceremony.

You will receive a limited edition, commemorative ticket as a keepsake to frame and remember this historic event. This ticket IS NOT required for admittance. To register for your tickets, complete and submit the form below.

It’s like they’re selling Ginsu knives or knock-off Fabergé eggs. In contrast, this was the inaugural ticket situation in November 2008:

If you’d like to attend President-elect Obama’s swearing-in ceremony, you’ll need to contact one of your U.S. senators or your representative to get tickets. You can identify your representative and senators online and find out how to get in touch with their offices. Be realistic about your chances, though: These offices have already received tens of thousands of requests, and only about 240,000 tickets will be available. For example, aides of Sen. Ben Cardin, a Maryland Democrat, told the Washington Post that they had received 40,000 requests for tickets by the Monday after the election. Many offices have already stopped taking names of constituents who call in hopes of attending. Some offices plan to draw names to decide who gets the coveted tickets.

3. Be wary of scam artists trying to sell you inauguration tickets. Tickets for the swearing-in are free, and they won’t be sent to the congressional offices until the week before the ceremony. If you are lucky enough to get one, you’ll have to go to the office to pick it up in person. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the chair of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, is even proposing legislation that would make selling inauguration tickets a federal crime.

I don’t doubt there will be hundreds of thousands of MAGAssholes in DC for the event. It’s a watershed moment for white supremacist groups and haters of all stripes, getting one of their own into the Oval Office. Even if it did take an assist from partisan malcontents in the FBI and a hostile foreign power.

And make no mistake, while Trump’s ascension may be a black swan event that makes the majority of our fellow citizens queasy, the fact of it has damaged this country’s reputation incalculably, internally and externally. We’re a fucking joke now. All the more reason to take our amusement where we can, I guess.

@Jerzy Russian: according to weather.com, on Friday there is a 90% chance of rain, in the 50’s. Saturday is predicted to be a tad warmer, partly cloudy and only 20% chance rain.

Weather forecasting is of course, just an educated guess. But I like the odds so far.

In our sometimes-bottomless fury at the 60-million people who voted for Trump (and what that seems to say about their character) – it would be wise to keep in mind that the depth of his support among a substantial portion of them was fairly shallow; as a rough measure, they are the margin between the 46% of the total vote he got and the 27% hard-core base GOP support.

KEY TAKEAWAY: We don’t need to successfully turn but mid-to-high single digits (out of 100% of Trump voters) in order to profoundly change the electoral dynamics in 2018 and especially 2020 in our favor. For example, if only 5% of those 60 million change their votes next time (3 million) – Clinton would have won with 66 million votes to Trump’s 57 million, enough of a landslide to have won several crucial states she lost and a few more. Note that the effect of turning a voter away from Trump into our column is doubled – +1 for us, -1 for them.

So: even though 90% of Trump voters are spiteful racist poopy-heads who thoroughly deserve getting shat upon by Trump – let’s not be so hostile to the modest 10% who are likely capable of waking the fuck up. Yeah, they fucked up, but we need to win ’em back on our side to take the country back.

It would be nice to think that this would finally drive the stake through the heart of the idea that our founders were in some ways gods among men. The truth is that despite the good things they left us as part of our patrimony, their moral cowardice and prejudices have caused much pain and needless blood to be spilled. The results of this election can be traced directly back through our Civil War to find its roots in this country’s original and founding sin of slavery. That they also served it up with a side order of elitism, operating under the belief that those of their social class who could trumpet freedom with one hand while whipping a slave with the other were somehow morally superior and less inclined to fall for demagoguery is just the cherry on top.

Some commenter from a think tank in the UK was on the BBC this morning and said that Donnie’s off-the-cuff tweeting is extremely dangerous. Either countries believe what he says and react accordingly (and likely impulsively), or they don’t believe what he says and the US loses the ability to affect events by having its previously nuanced words be taken seriously. I mean, our trade and investment into Russia is TINY compared with those two countries. I of course, was wrong. Trade relationships are actually very weak. A couple of foreign crisis with China brought about by proclaiming Taiwan an interdependent country here, threatening a blockade in the South China sea there and those business relationships are over. The only thing stopping this from getting completely out of control quickly is the Donald’s belief that Obama has destroyed the military and it needs to be rebuilt. A few forced resignations of Obama appointees here and there, removing the gays and the Muslims from the service and everything will be “fixed” unfortunately. You may be 38 years old, as I happen to be. And one day, some great opportunity stands before you and calls you to stand up for some great principle, some great issue, some great cause. And you refuse to do it because you are afraid…. You refuse to do it because you want to live longer…. You’re afraid that you will lose your job, or you are afraid that you will be criticized or that you will lose your popularity, or you’re afraid that somebody will stab you, or shoot at you or bomb your house; so you refuse to take the stand.

Well, you may go on and live until you are 90, but you’re just as dead at 38 as you would be at 90. And the cessation of breathing in your life is but the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit.

Institutions only work if citizens make them work. We didn’t. Many things we “thought” or took for granted turned out not to be the case. We have to take note and learn from this and hopefully get another shot. Big mistake to wait for the top down leader to make it all right for us. That is how we end up with no state legislatures and no congress or the executive. I truly do not know however how we ended up with this Russian thing! Didn’t see that one!

We really do have to examine “our institutions” though. They collapsed like cheap lawn chairs. This is a much bigger problem than Donald Trump and 20,000 white working class voters. “Our institutions” are apparently low quality. Trump tapped them on the shoulder and they fell down dead. NOT as resilient as one might hope!

Ultimately, institutions are representative of the people. The Republican Party capitulated to Trump, and enough people voted for him to make a difference. The people are getting what they wanted, or what they thought they wanted.

And they’re breaking out the special, mystical, light shining Reagan Bible.

Vice President-elect Mike Pence will have a special connection to a past president when he raises his right hand to be sworn in as the second in command of the United States.

The Columbus native’s left hand will rest on two Bibles of importance to him on Friday.

“I am going to be using Ronald Reagan’s Bible. I’m also going to be using one of our personal Bibles from home; it will be different than the one I used when I was inaugurated as governor,” Pence said Friday.

The Bible that Reagan — the 40th U.S. president — used for both of his presidential inaugurations was a family Bible given to him by his mother, and opened to II Chronicles 7:14, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies….

Pence’s inauguration will be the first time the Reagan family Bible has been outside of the Reagan family or foundation’s possession, and one of Reagan’s top aides is transporting the Bible to Washington, D.C., Lotter said.

Most of the letter: “…[T]his constituent would love to see you join your colleague Rep. Lewis and the (last count I saw) 25 other congresspeople who will not attend the inauguration.

I consider myself a reasonable and realistic person with a belief in the value of government and its stability. Normally I am susceptible to arguments for falling into line to endorse the “peaceful transfer of power” and to maintain “positive relationships with the opposition.”

This is different, in my mind. Any protest or other action that can be taken to highlight the abnormality and illegitimacy of the incoming regime, including refusing to accord it the usual political courtesies, I urge you to participate in.

I’m middle-aged and well remember many electoral disappointments, including the extraordinary results of the 2000 election. This is much worse. It is unconscionable that the incoming regime will even take office, and uncompromising rhetorical and “optical” resistance to it is the highest ethical stance. It is also, in my opinion, a key component of effectiveness for the opposition going forward. Collaboration is not going to get us anywhere with the Democratic base, low-information voters, or winnable GOP leaners. Make the regime and its enablers own every particle of its disastrous actions. Another Penzey’s email. God, I love this guy.:

Two years ago, as part of our Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance, I emailed a link to Dr. King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail. It was the time of Ferguson, and of Black Lives Matter. In that time, so many were saying they understood the protesters frustrations with injustice but… “But” this is not the right time. “But” this is not the right way. “But” these are just outside agitators. Dr. King’s letter so perfectly had the answer: “injustice must be exposed, with all the tension its exposure creates, to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured.”

Two years ago I shared a link to the Letter as a useful piece of our past that I thought might help understand why Ferguson was important. Rereading Dr. King’s Letter from the Birmingham Jail once again this weekend, it hit me that this is no longer our past, this is very much our present, and almost certainly our future. With so many in this past election voting for a presidential candidate in spite of his intentionally open racism, and with so many more remaining silent while this happened, Dr. King’s word are as true today as they were on April 16, 1963. “We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people.”

Plus for me I also like this quote explaining the timing for his actions that had brought him to the Birmingham jail: “Knowing that a strong economic withdrawal program would be the by-product of direct action, we felt that this would be the best time to bring pressure to bear on the merchants for the needed change.”

It’s unlimited corporate money in politics, and “corporations are people too” that have brought us to where we are today. It is so incredibly important to have people in the streets Saturday to show the world the American people’s rejection of all discrimination. But in the long run it’s equally important to have our spending as well work for the needed change. If I had a corporation, I would be doing my best to figure out how to have that corporation work to support the true values, compassion, and kindness of the American people.

And if you haven’t taken the time this week to read/re-read Dr. King’s Letter from the Birmingham Jail, please take the time to read it this week.

MLK – Now more than ever!

The problem with the founding fathers is that we treat them like prophets and gods instead of the politicians they actually were.

I think if they came back to life, sure, they’d take issue with a lot of what we’ve done with the country (and what that would be would vary from founder to founder, because they weren’t speaking with one voice), but I’ve always suspected that one of the things that would revolt them the most about us is simply the ridiculous amount of genuflecting at their altar that we do. I feel like a lot of them would slap us over the head and tell us to solve our own problem instead of asking what they would’ve done. (It’s for damn sure the founding fathers didn’t build what they did by sitting around wondering what some long-dead idealized historical figures would’ve done).

    @Kay:

This election really drove home to me what Paxton’s definition of fascism meant about “uneasy but effective collaboration” between “traditional elites” and “a mass party of committed nationalist militants.”

It’s one thing to have a large number of crazy people following antidemocratic messiahs, if the “establishment” (meaning among other things those institutions you mention) isn’t playing along with them. It’s one thing to have “establishment” institutions acting in an antidemocratic manner if you have enough unified public opposition to them. Fascism (when it succeeds) involves massive system failure in enough of your institutions/establishment/leadership and enough of the electorate that democratic norms and governance starts to simply collapse.

    @Chris:

The problem with the founding fathers is that we treat them like prophets and gods instead of the politicians they actually were.

We are the Founders. Despite the hooey of a Justice Scalia, it’s a living freaking Constitution. That’s why the document says “We the people….” It’s inclusive of subsequent generations. This means you can’t push problems onto the errors of the past. Deal with it now. Make it better now. Make a more perfect union now.

There is a story, often told, that upon exiting the Constitutional Convention Benjamin Franklin was approached by a group of citizens asking what sort of government the delegates had created.

His answer was: “A republic, if you can keep it.”

It is not the problem of some hoary founder lost in the mists of time if Trump kills democracy. It’s on us.

If it means that we are in Civil War 2.0, so be it.

@NMgal: I agree, and have traditionally shared your general disposition. These are not normal times, this is not a normal politician, and the consequences of politeness in the face of these circumstances are too severe. No quarter should be given, ever, to this guy, or his party, or its members, or anyone who voted for him. It is, as someone remarked upthread, a moral failing that I have forever stamped on anyone I know who pulled the lever for Cheeto Benito.

@Corner Stone: Riffing off my Middle Ages reading, compared to the Cheeto Benito, GWB would be like Henry V and Trump would be a combination of the absolute worst aspects of Edward II & Richard II.

@J R in WV: Sure. She was obviously fucking shook. As was her team. I wish she had sent a message to Trump’s team and said, “Hold up, podner. You are Putin’s Puppet and we both know it.”
But the sitting president had other ideas and HRC is nothing if not cognizant of every single thing going on around her in the official-dom arena.
I, personally, wish she had flipped the quad birds at Obama and Trump and said, “I am in this to win this and fuck both you MEN.”

@Brachiator: Obviously Pence isn’t turning his bible to the page with 2 Chronicles 6:32-33. “As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm—when they come and pray toward this temple, then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.”
