Didn’t watch the last speech and don’t plan to watch this press conference. I feel like a 12-year-old hiding out in my room, refusing to say goodbye to my dad because I know when he leaves, my mom will marry that creepy, evil, leering boyfriend. So I’m just gonna sit in the closet and sing la-la-la-la-la.
@Timurid: I am really in favor of resigning so Biden is 45th president.

@Betty Cracker: You should watch his last speech once you’ve gotten your bearings. It was great and touching. I wasn’t weepy until I saw Malia wiping away tears. That’s when I lost it. His tribute to his wife was especially moving. Their love is palpable. We had 8 good years with that family.
I haven’t commented here since the election. And it’s still hard for me to talk about this. Been calling representative and trying to figure out my most effective response though. Sometimes it’s the little things that really get to me. Thinking about the Obamas having to go to the White House for the unveiling of their official portraits sickens me. Trump at the opening of the Obama library is unthinkable. And with HW dying in intensive care and Barbara hospitalized with exhaustion, the thought of Trump parading around at a state funeral makes me crazy.

When I saw it, I was amazed at how he was able to still find optimistic things to say about the current state of our politics. The recognition of his wife and daughters was extremely moving, as well as his call to arms to get involved in the process of bringing about change.
ETA: That is a figurative call to arms, not a literal one. I know it doesn’t need clarification for most, but there’s always the trolls.

I’m not in the closet about BHO. I didn’t really care about him in the slightest when he started his run, but he won me over to thinking he could be good. It took 3 years for me to like him. Nothing about him as a person was unlikeable, but when it comes to an elected office holder, i need to see who they are with power over time. We are going to miss him as a nation and really perceive the lost opportunities. But I will never, ever consider Donald Trump legitimately elected and a successor in the line of American presidents. I pray his name is struck from the records and his number is buried. And I have great faith in him, his cabinet and his party to do untold levels of damage to the world so that this will be so. I wish I were kidding. Just as my hunches told me Obama most definitely would be president if he wanted it, back in the 07 primaries, they have been telling me that if HRC didn’t win, we will be facing things our ancestors thought they had already sacrificed enough to destroy. Not even unease, just the sense that now is a good time to deal with anything you have as a loose end and to prepare for… a very long period of evil. We have 2018 to stop it from being fully entrenched and even then, it will be after much harm is caused.

@Corner Stone:
Much like his endless, pointless tirade against Mr Khan made him look bad, so does this. For him and Steve King to continue to bash Rep. John Lewis makes them look small and petty. One is a pathological liar, calling a civil right icon a liar, the other is an ignorant racist loudmouth saying that apart from his work during the Civil Rights Era, he has never done anything for this country. If that was all John Lewis had ever done, it would be more than enough. All Steve Kin has ever done is show us who and what he is, a disgrace.

@Elizabelle: They are performing a great public service with the timing of these illnesses. They’ve both had a good long run and they could do the most patriotic thing the crime family has ever done still …
@Thoroughly Pizzled: President Obama’s energy increased as he was talking about voting rights. He’s passionate about it. He’ll be working on that post-presidency.
109.
Elizabelle
@Thoroughly Pizzled: Yep. Especially since voting fraud is a fantasy. Yes, it can happen. But it does not, and not in the numbers thrown about. It’s rare.
Get some hard-working registrars out there talking up ballot security. From deep red states, too. It’s often the gadabouts shrieking about voter fraud. It’s not that often the actual registrars and poll workers. Why should their work be so demeaned?
As an absolute number, no President has had an increase of 12,000, but over time it wouldn’t be a surprise for someone to top it eventually (as the Dow grows, 12,000 becomes a smaller percentage – for instance, a 12,000 increase over the next eight years would be just about 60%, which isn’t that much higher than the historical average). What surprised me when I looked at this was the number of Presidents who’ve had percentage growth higher than Obama, including Clinton (maybe not a big surprise) and Coolidge. Right now Obama is neck-and-neck with Reagan, even. He’s also far behind Roosevelt, who had the double advantage of coming in during the depth of the Great Depression and of serving more than 12 years. If you just count Roosevelt’s first eight years, Obama actually is comfortably ahead.

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to stop wishing terrible things on Trump and his two sons (I don’t have any use for Ivanka, she’s a grifter like her old man but I have to assume that a male Trump is by definition much worse than a female Trump). I did break that resolution early on Jan 1, but I’m still working on it. But than I think of how awful those three are, they are essentially worthless human beings, and I start over again. My friend reminded me recently of Donald Trump Jr. and his skittles tweet (compared Syrian refugees to a bowl of skittles with three poisoned skittles among them), and all I could think was that perfectly embodied the Trump family.

SecState Kerry would be next in line of succession and be sworn in for a for however long. I’m not sure how Kerry would feel about occupying the office he previously sought for so short a time.
Of course, beyond the fact that this would never work, it is a dick move that is unworthy of the Presidency and especially beneath President Obama who has too much class to do it even if it would work. Plus, if something like that would work, the GOP might shamelessly be doing it at any opportunity. I only use “might” because Presidents at this stage are all thinking about legacy and how they’ll be remembered. They don’t want that type of dick move to be last thing on their record.

You know, seeing all these stories on TPM, Kos, et al, about GOP reps getting reamed out by their constituent over the ACA… this reminds me of what was being said 7, 8 years ago…
Back in the early days of Obama’s administration, when the health care debate was raging, the Tea Party was ramping up, and it was up in the air as to whether anything would get done, the more practical-minded liberals were begging, pleading for anything to get passed… the idea being that, once benefits were in place, people would realize that they enjoyed having them, and wouldn’t want to give them up.
And once these benefits were accepted by the public, then future generations could go about expanding it and fixing it. A lot of people fussed about passing a watered-down bill, of course, but this was letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
So what the Republicans are now seeing is what happens when they try to take away benefits that are not only accepted by the public, but have actually made their lives better. It’s early yet, and repeal could still happen, but I bet a lot of them are thinking long and hard about how much they actually want to go through with this.
And if we can get over this hurdle, then the ACA is here to stay (even if in an amended form), and future generations can fix it.
The chant is on a new one-minute track called “Tiny Hands,” which repeats 10 words recorded by Ms. Apple on a phone:
“We don’t want your tiny hands/anywhere near our underpants.”
Not elegant. But amusing.
Ms. Apple’s new song is not the first time that Mr. Trump’s comments from the incendiary recording have been repurposed by his opponents. A group of knitters united online to form “The Pus sy hat Project,” dedicated to creating 1.1 million hats for protesters to wear at the march on Saturday.
“Tiny Hands” is also not the indie singer’s first protest song aimed at Mr. Trump. Last year, Ms. Apple released a Christmas tune on Tumblr that made such ferocious use of a double entendre that its title can’t be published in The New York Times.
OK. What is it?

@Elizabelle: I don’t know what it’s called but the first line is “Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” Link to her Tumblr.
Singer’s holiday parody “Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire” is one of several anti-Trump, end-of-2016 spoofs
Fiona Apple gave a fiery version of her anti-Trump “Christmas Song” parody, “Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” during the all-star Standing Rock benefit concert at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theatre on Sunday.
The reclusive singer released a casual a cappella recording of the song earlier this month. But her live takedown featured a smooth, quietly jazzy backing band. Like the original version, Apple’s live performance swapped Bob Wells and Mel Tormé’s holiday lyrics to call out Trump’s misogynistic and racist remarks.
With a jazz band. BOOM again.
“Everybody knows some money and entitlement/ Can help to make the season white,” Apple sang. “Mothers of color with their kids out of sight/ Will find it hard to sleep at night.” Apple ended the performance by screaming a cathartic “Donald Trump, fuck you!”
If the Republicans want to craft a fantasy world where tax cuts work, health care is unnecessary, and rich white guys ruled forever and ever, I’m creating a fantasy world where Obama is still President.
Take THAT, Fox Not-News

@patroclus: To be fair think you need percent increase in stocks, not gross. Have not looked, but assume nobody had a 250% increase in eight years either.
I still think Hillary should release a statement saying she’s going to remind him that he is supposed to be President of all the people, including the majority that didn’t vote for him, and that they’ll be watching him.
For what it’s worth-this lurker and observer of the current cluster$&@k of the US centre left agrees that voting rights should be the número uno political campaign going forward. Of course defending the ACA must be front and central to mobilising people to resist.
But until the US centre left (and left if it comes to that) deals with the international scandal of voter suppression in your polity, claims about the ‘greatest democracy on earth’ are risible.

The informal, inter-agency working group began to explore possible Russian interference last spring, long before the FBI received information from a former British spy hired to develop politically damaging and unverified research about Trump, according to the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the inquiry.
…
A key mission of the six-agency group has been to examine who financed the email hacks of the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta. The London-based transparency group WikiLeaks released the emails last summer and in October.
The working group is scrutinizing the activities of a few Americans who were affiliated with Trump’s campaign or his business empire and of multiple individuals from Russia and other former Soviet nations who had similar connections, the sources said.

@Corner Stone:
All Steve Kin has ever done is show us who and what he is, a disgrace.

randy khan
@patroclus:
