Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Come on, man.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

I was promised a recession.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Second rate reporter says what?

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Let there be snark.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Accountability, motherfuckers.

We still have time to mess this up!

Man With Very Small Hands Oddly Concerned About Size

This post is in: Hail to the Hairpiece

Go figure:

President Donald Trump became “visibly enraged” over the weekend when he saw that the Women’s March dwarfed the size of his inauguration crowd, The Washington Post reported.

White House sources told the Post that Trump’s celebratory mood turned to “flashes of anger” less than 24 hours after he took office.

“Trump turned on the television to see a jarring juxtaposition — massive demonstrations around the globe protesting his day-old presidency and footage of the sparser crowd at his inauguration, with large patches of white empty space on the Mall,” the paper reported. “As his press secretary, Sean Spicer, was still unpacking boxes in his spacious new West Wing office, Trump grew increasingly and visibly enraged.”

Yes, Donald. The women’s were bigger than yours.

The jokes, they write themselves.

A sane man, a man who is not obviously mentally unstable, i.e. a normal politician, would look at his popular vote loss, his plunging popularity, and the massive demonstrations on Saturday, and realize that perhaps he needs to rethink things. Sadly, he will not.

On the hopeful side: does he have a single ally of any consequence? The man is pure electoral poison. I think Paul Ryan, Lindsay Graham, etc. (who all despise him) will realize this sooner rather than later. Maybe…

To: “is he threatening to declare martial law”. What’s missing is the context: he started tweeting about Chicago after watching a segment on it on the O’Reilly Factor this evening. If they’d had him watch a DVR episode of Too Cute he’d be tweeting about puppies and kittens.

There’s a great deal of horrible shit that would’ve happened with any Republican in the White House – ACA repeal, block-granting everything, abortion bans, school vouchers, etc., etc. (And not to put too fine a point on it, but we were bound to lose eventually. Nothing lasts forever.) I’ve come to terms with the inevitability of these setbacks.

    January 24, 2017 at 10:59 pm

    @Renie: Excellent.

    DCist also too:

The D.C. Trump International Hotel in the Old Post Office lost more than $1 million in net income during its first two months of operation and its revenues were $2 million less than estimates it provided to the General Services Administration, which owns the historic building, according to a letter released by House Democrats.

The hotel sits on the same street at President Donald Trump’s new White House digs, and House Democrats are continuing to make noise about the apparent breach of contract represented by Trump taking office while not fully divested from the lease.

A new letter from House Democrats, led by Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the ranking member on the House Oversight Committee, outlines their continued concerns about the hotel, with a few digs about its economic viability.

    […]

While this letter continues to raise the point of the lease violation, it also shoots some daggers at how the International Trump Hotel did not meet its own economic projections when it first opened, according to documents from the GSA.

While the hotel had a “soft opening” in September before the ribbon-cutting in late October, the real revenue and income numbers were both lower than estimated.

It’s notable, however, that all these numbers stem from the months before Trump was elected to the highest office in the land, back when the hotel was a punching bag. Since then, it has grown in popularity for foreign diplomats and as the site of events.

“Why wouldn’t I stay at his hotel blocks from the White House, so I can tell the new president, ‘I love your new hotel!’ Isn’t it rude to come to his city and say, ‘I am staying at your competitor?’” one diplomat told The Washington Post 10 days after the election.

The nation of Bahrain, for instance, hosted a reception there, raising further ethical concerns. The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations held its Hannukah party at the hotel, prompting eight liberal members of the group to skip it.

Given all the police presence and protest signs around the hotel during the Women’s March last Saturday, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the hotel’s best days under Trump are behind it – already.

It’s a growing boat anchor around his neck.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Its tied to a gang and drug problem that has been poorly handled by Chicago’s authorities going back decades. But there’s a reason that even the Chicago PD won’t go into these areas in force.

    @Adam L Silverman:

Except the reason that Chicago is seeing a spike in the gun homicide and shooting rate is because a lot of those folks are armed. Its tied to a gang and drug problem that has been poorly handled by Chicago’s authorities going back decades.

Not to get into a debate about gun laws, but I believe a strong argument can be made that cities like Chicago (and DC before it) have troubles controlling gun violence (in part) because if they try to have stronger gun laws their either struck down by the right-wing courts, or the very loose laws down-state or in surrounding states make it easy for them to be imported.

    Bloomberg on Chicago.

Virginia is in the top 10 of states where its guns are used in crimes in other states.

It’s complicated and a systemic approach is needed (as I think you’d agree).

Although reading up on the issue, it appears that the problem is that no one big dude is behind the crimes because the gangs in Chicago aren’t shooting over drugs and they are all very small. Lots of gang members in hundreds of gangs with a few members each. Maybe those tough policemen are just sociable and know a lot of people.

@p.a.: I know several generals in the NG – former students of mine. And several more senior colonels and lieutenant colonels – also former students of mine (some of whom will, hopefully make it to general). They know their business. They take their oaths very seriously. They are the closest thing we have to an archetype of citizen-soldier these days. Many work in municipal or state government. Their client is the US Constitution and through it the American people. They do not see themselves as here to ensure domestic order, but to protect and defend the Constitution and the people of the US. And to largely do so in an expeditionary manner.

As for who would go: it would be very strange bordering on the unprecedented, to try to nationalize the Alabama Guard and sent it to Chicago. If a massive disaster hit Illinois and the Illinois NG was either deployed forward or just unable to respond adequately, then there would be an attempt to borrow Guard units from other states to assist. In a situation like this, even if the Illinois Governor decided to activate the Guard and provide them in a support capacity to the municipal and state law enforcement, it would be the Illinois Guard.

Do I think the President is erratic enough to invoke martial law? Yes. Do I think its likely? No, especially not for something like this. Do I think if he did that it would hasten the destruction of what little political capital and goodwill he has? Yes it would.

It’s like they’re applying shock and awe, flash bangs on all sides, against their US opposition. They’re also using the divide and splinter strategy that’s been so effective against Ds in elections.

I hope we can oppose all these attacks (on public lands, science, women’s rights, public education, … ,,, ,,, … … ) and still be aware enough to protect African Americans, Hispanics, Muslims, immigrants and freedom of speech from the further attacks that are coming.

A possibility is that even as he loses support, and as leaks increase about his incompetence, it becomes more likely that he will protect himself by twisting something into a ‘terrorist attack,’ or exaggerating one.

Right after 9-11, people popped up to take advantage of the media attention and give shallow opinions on who the instigators were. I don’t remember them all, but the Libyans were suggested, the Palestinians got blamed, and more. The talkers were mostly just opportunists. But still, even people mistaken for Palestinians or Muslims were beaten. Now because of the election there’s more open agitation toward immigrants and blacks, and I really fear what happens when suggestible people listen to carelessness or worse.

    @Omnes Omnibus:

Trump can’t just send the Alabama Guard to Chicago because he wants to.

Unless, of course, the Congress gives him that power. After all, Trump is going to need to send in the Guard to take over sanctuary cities. Ryan and McConnell could just assist by giving the president permission to use the Guard when and where he sees fit, um, where national security makes it necessary — at the discretion of the Tantrum-Thrower-in-Chief.

With this Congress and president and the “new” SCOTUS anything is possible. Original intent could suddenly give way to “immediate necessity.”

@elm: If the rule of law no longer applies, then everything is out the window. We’re not that far gone, yet. The 1% doesn’t want that, for one thing.

Look, Trump tweeted something ambiguous. He may even issue some Executive Order about it. But he doesn’t control everything. The National Guard or the 101st Airborne isn’t going to invade Chicago. It just isn’t going to happen. There are too many checks and balances, too many people and institutions with their own agendas and power bases that don’t correspond to Trump’s, and the country wouldn’t stand for it.

Let’s worry about and fight what he’s actually doing and not about maximalist interpretations that sap our energy.

    My $0.02.

    Cheers,

@p.a.: No. Ike thought he had an agreement with Governor Faubus that the AR Guard would be left at the school not to keep the students out, but to maintain order. When Faubus reneged on the deal, Ike Federalized the AR National Guard, ordered them to stand down, and sent in two brigades from the 101st Airborne Division to ensure that the desegregation order was enforced and order maintained. Omnes will have to explain how that last part was legal, but I think it was because the law about where the US military could be used domestically and when was different at that time.

@Schlemazel: I have faith in the people I’ve served with, taught, trained, and/or supervised. I also have faith that the President is erratic and will grow even more so. And I have faith that those around him all have their own agendas and will continue to jockey for position and opportunity and will pull themselves apart. And I have faith that the GOP majorities in Congress will do nothing until doing nothing begins to jeopardize them. I also have faith that the majority of Americans who voted against the President will not tolerate this. As I’ve written here many times in comments: Americans are not joiners. We don’t like being told what to do. And while those that scream Freedom and Liberty the loudest are actually the ones that do like being told, they aren’t a majority. They are just loud, obnoxious, and annoying. And they only win if we let them. If we let them dictate the terms of the contest. If we let them define Americanness and patriotism and liberty and freedom. If we let them out vote the rest of us. If we fail to regularly and firmly point out their hypocrisy and false piety. And if we give in to despair.

It seems guns are loud and hurt the shooters’ ears. Poor babies — ever hear of ear plugs?

Actually, at ranges hearing and eye protection is usually required by rule.

When hunting, listening intently is part of the action. It’s really hard to see a deer in the forest, they have evolved to be invisible. Their coat changes color with the seasons, grayer in the fall and winter. But when they move you can hear them and know where to look harder.

I’m personally not interested in carrying a silenced rifle in the woods, or any rifle in the woods, but that’s the point the hunting shooters are ineptly trying to make.

@Schlemazel: Back in the days before a national drinking age of 21 every state had its own. Where I grew up in western Illinois, we just went across the Mississippi to Iowa where the drinking age was 18 instead of 19. When I went to Champaign/Urbana for college, the state of Illinois was 19 but since the majority of the University was located in Urbana the city had an 18 year old drinking law. They got enough money from the state for the University they could afford to forego the money for signing on to the 19 year law. All the freshmen drank in Urbana. Then, just before I turned 21 they changed to law to 21 so I couldn’t legally drink for about a month.
