Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Everybody saw this coming.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Not all heroes wear capes.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

This blog will pay for itself.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

The revolution will be supervised.

Republicans in disarray!

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Updates Done, Not All Work Done

This post is in: Open Threads, Site Maintenance

Folks,

The site is updated and our customizations reapplied. I moved some things to the child theme so less work next time, but we still customize 8 theme files and 6 plugin files to get the site working this way.

I’ve also restored Back button functionality and Read More now works like it should.

There’s lots more to do, but my eyes are getting a bit tired and so I’m taking a break. I’ve been hard at work on a video issue for Adam and that’s taken a lot of time and reading, still without a good answer for how to post live video like from TV channels or other live event video streams. YouTube works fine, but live events from other video sources seems to not.

Once again, thank you all for your generosity, patience, and encouragement.  Feel free to use this as an open thread and to make any more requests/comments.

See my earlier post with a list of items I’m hoping to tackle right now – https://balloon-juice.com/2017/01/25/making-some-tweaks-you-have-been-warned/

Whichever one of you asked in an earlier thread “what’s next, Trump’s going to start looking for the real killer in the O.J. Simpson case?”, thanks, because I’m now getting ads for IS OJ INNOCENT?

That “spinning ballerina” is one of my favourite — because one of the craziest — optical illusions. Usually, eventually, I can get my brain to override my senses and figure out what’s going on, but with this one I just can’t. But I love it.

P.S. Again, Alain, many thanks for what you do around here. At least that you’re willing to admit to.

@Immanentize: figures. I didn’t test the down button which is custom. Sorry. When I get back to my computer I’ll fix. Thanks for the tip!

@SiubhanDuinne: I intend to do a lot more writing. I can’t get through Trump’s reign alive without writing out some of the angst in hopes of discovering new conversations with the great readers here. But first, more work on the site.

Oh, Hell! ETA to say thanks, Alain!! Keep on hanging in there for us. Glad folks pitched in for the upgrade! By the time I had a chance it was turned off already. Back to my post:

I never really got into coding for the innertubes. HTML a little bit, I can look up what I need to format a page…

But XML and CSS – not really at all. Javascript neither. I learned about ColdFusion, which is a tool to do interactive web sites driven by database queries, but never had time to get proficient with that tool. WordPress didn’t even exist.

Then I retired, and built another little house, and, and, and did stuff. Not computer stuff. Oh well, next lifetime, maybe.

    Alain –
    Thanks very much.

I have one more teensy request for the site: can you add a button which, when pressed, sends us back about 8 months, and :
    A) Fires Comey
    B) Publishes Deadbeat Shitgibbon’s tax returns
    C) Makes Deadbeat Shitgibbon’s Russia connections the continuing front-page story in every major daily
    D) Fixes vote suppression in WI, MI, PA, NC, and FL
    E) Gives Fascist Bannon a stroke

I realize it’s probably a little more work than some of the stuff you’ve already done, but I have faith in your skills.

@SiubhanDuinne: I’ve never heard of that thing and it’s 14 years old???

I’m left-handed but my pivot foot is my right foot, and I can spin on my right foot. So I naturally see it going clockwise on the right foot, just like I do.

@SiubhanDuinne: It’s a matter of which leg you see as extended. The actual image is flat and arranged such that you can pick either leg: there’s not enough butt angle, or whatever, to force you to pick one or the other. Once you pick one your brain generally sticks with it as being “that one”. (Mine does not, especially if there is timing jitter in the video.)

Apparently I should call it a day. Trying to fiddle with the down button somehow caused other issues. I’m tired and so I’m done. That button will be back tomorrow plus on the mobile site. Thanks again to all, time to go make some fresh soup and cook some fish for dinner.

In case my repair messed something else up, please report it here. I will check to ensure I didn’t make some other side effect.

@D58826: yea, I just saw that. One was working, I tried to fix the missing down arrow and it messed both up, so I undid and now? Wtf.

But I’m tired and my eyes are spent and I am making dinner. I’ll try to get back upstairs to my office and fix tonight but it might not be until the morning as I need some time away from the computer screen.

Sorry for the pain in the ass folks.

What happens with me is, I see her spinning counterclockwise and she keeps spinning counterclockwise until I blink, then she is spinning clockwise and keeps spinning clockwise until I blink again, then counterclockwise and so on usw etc. So I think during the brief “blink time,” my brain does something to undo whatever it was processing previously. But I don’t really understand.

I started with clockwise, couldn’t get it to turn. then realized when I look at the lower left hand corner below the video, it turns counter-clockwise, lower right = clockwise.
