Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Republicans would impeach Biden if he bit into a whole Kit Kat rather than breaking the sections apart.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

A consequence of cucumbers

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

“Look, it’s not against the rules anywhere, but a black woman with power was dating and there has to be something wrong with that.”

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Putin dreamed of ending NATO, and now it’s Finnish-ed.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Donald Trump, welcome to your everything, everywhere, all at once.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

The willow is too close to the house.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Everybody saw this coming.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

More Site Tweaks Today and Tomorrow

Folks,

Just a little heads up – I’ll be doing some tweaks today and tomorrow.

  1. New up/down buttons for desktop and mobile site
  2. Tweaking Mobile Site
  3. Likely some tweaks to main layout b/c of ginormous banner ad
  4. Better live video streaming
  5. New instructions for commenting (enhanced commenting basically as this version of WordPress has brought in some new capabilities)
  6. Perhaps a better set of text tools for making comments if it works well in our site
  7. Site Hardening

Some of these changes may temporarily result in the site looking or behaving differently. If so, this will be as brief as possible.

Some of the things we’re tweaking for security may have an unexpected side-effect which will be remedied as soon as it is obvious that there’s an issue.

Carry on, everybody, you’ve all done very well.

“Head’s”, Alain”? Really? Unless you mean it as a contraction, such as, “Head is up,” which would probably mean yours. Or unless there’s more to the sentence, such as…”his ass,” in which case it would probably refer to Trump’s.

One commenting tool that would be really helpful, if it’s available, would be a button to do strike-outs. Enough of us enjoy making snarky “FTFY” corrections to other commenters (or legit corrections to our own prose, on the rare occasions that is needed) that I’m sure such a button would get a lot of use.

Sarcasm font would also be nice :-)

And I, for one, want to thank you for allowing naked URL links. They don’t look as pretty as embedded links, but sometimes they’re more appropriate.

Over at Lawyers, Guns, and Money, they have implemented another font in comments, used to indicate sarcasm or more to the point Snark. I think it’s a variant on Times Roman, and the button they used was Code /Code to shift into or out of pure snark – I think that was a mistake, Snark /Snark would have more obvious and less mysterious.

There’s so much snARK around, and sometimes people don’t realize there’s something besides straight ahead logic being written around here and take offense. Maybe ask J Cole what he thinks of having a Snark button, and maybe Comic Sans as the font? Just wondering.

It would be nice to use Bold and Emphasis (Italic) at the same time, since italic here is so faint.

Like this!!11 – it used to not work, let’s see if it does now…

    Whadayano.

    Never mind. :-)

I agree with the Mob Enforcer that a really bold Strikeout option would be good too, and a Sarcasm font. Maybe Olde Englishe or something. ;-)

    Cheers,
    Scott.

    @SiubhanDuinne:

I see I’m not the only person who enjoys the Snark around here. And I often use the Deleted command by typing it manually, which works today but might not tomorrow …

@J R in WV: what’s the deleted command? I’m looking for tips to add to a expandable help topic above the comment box. All tips from users are welcome!

Oh and I’ll look at what’s available. WordPress blocks lots of HTML for non-logged-in commenters so I have a limited set of options and limited control.

@Alain the site fixer: Not JR, but the [del] [/del] tags are what I use to do strikeout, but it’s rather subtle.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Alain, I ran into something a day or two ago where my comment was eaten, and I didn’t get any kind of error message. This happened twice when I posted comments with the URL for a Soundcloud link. I finally succeeded when I used a URL shortener to post the link. That passed muster.

Is this actually a problem? Not for me, to be honest, but thought I’d pass it along to you anyway in case is it something worth worrying about. For all I know Soundcloud is intentionally blocked to keep out audio spam, audio pop-ups, etc. Just spitballin’ here…

Maybe I missed the consensus agreement to not have social media share buttons, as they seem to be gone.

Would very much like to promote BJ by being able to share many of the excellent posts on Twitter. With a nice attention-getting picture that would increase traffic. Which, in turn, would increase site impact. Increasing market for potential pet adopters and supporters of MARC.

What about nesting the comments? I work with WP and there are different ways of doing that. (Forgive me if that’s something you’ve already tried and rejected for some reason in the past…) It’s really so much nicer to have replies appear directly underneath the comment being replied-to!
