Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

The willow is too close to the house.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

We still have time to mess this up!

You cannot shame the shameless.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

    FYI.

The Polish government published an online database on Monday, listing the names of and personal details about 9,686 wartime staff who ran the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during the years 1940-1945.

The state-run Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) said they hope the database, built upon historians’ decades of archival research, will bring justice to some of the guards while also curbing the use of the phrase “Polish death camps.”
    [snip]
…up to 200 former Nazi guards who worked at the infamous German death camp that killed around 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, could still be alive.… Source

@amk: I think it’s where they’re flying. This part of Yemen is largely desert. Any sand or grit or dust beyond normal tolerance that gets into the machinery can bring a rotary wing craft down real quick. Also, these ops take place at night. So there’s an error factor in terms of where to land. Its why multiple aircraft of the same make are used to provide redundancy in case of equipment failure, crash, and/or battle damage. This was one of the big lessons learned of Operation Eagle Claw to free the hostages in Iran. Every service had to have one of their SF teams involved. Each of them had their own equipment. Each had their own radio frequencies/comms.

I would like the Democrats to answer any questions about SCOTUS with comments about Merrick Garland’s record. Talk about Garland as if he were the nominee. Go on Sunday shows and talk about Merrick Garland.

I’d like them to ask Gorsuch questions about Garland’s record and reputation. Get Gorsuch to praise him.

If it comes to a floor debate (before filibustering the final vote, denying cloture), all their speeches should be about Garland, how he was the perfect compromise candidate, Garland has not had his hearing and vote yet, etc. etc. etc.

Just keep talking about Garland, no matter what.

Wow, warning folks to not read CNN’s front page or headline on the nomination. It’s disgusting. Like heart slouchingly disgusting. It should be a warning, this is not the ground to fight on. The nomination teevee show needs immediate push back, but it should be specifically on grounds where we win. I want to hear about Merrick garland. I want to hear about trumps taxes and conflicts. I want to hear about popular vote. I want to hear about cheapening and stacking the court through political machinations and turning the nominating process into a reality teevee show.

I do not want to hear about everything wrong with this judge. In the fight we’re in right now, it doesn’t matter. I want him contrasted with trump. “What a refreshing change to deal with someone who while dangerously misguided, is not cruel, stupid,or a manipulative sneak. It is difficult to understand how anyone could see the current “administration” as anything other than a clown show gone horribly wrong. But those people have been with us for a very long time. They tried to secede once, we’re still here. They tried to kill unions so they could fuck over workers (which of course they are still trying to do) and we are still here. They screamed about segregating the military and we’re still here………
On the other hand I feel this next period of history is going to be pretty rocky because we are being “governed” by sadistic morons so I get your angst. But we actually had more votes, for an actually qualified person, we can put on a lot more pressure and a lot quicker than any time in the past, and there is actually a large number of us on the not unreasonable side of the equation. We just need to keep the pressure on, keep pushing and have just a wee bit of hope. Wasn’t that one of the slogans from the last president?

    Reposting from the other night:
I have an autistic son who is 36 years old. We all went to see Hidden Figures last night and I’m having to explain cultural shifts over time. Why there were colored fountains and bathrooms and why the math whiz had to run a half mile to find a colored bathroom when she needed to pee.
Teaching him about this and the marches brings back how hard it is for him to assimilate social norms.
He was nonverbal until he was 4 years old. He was in speech therapy just trying to learn to make the sounds. And it was one step forward and two steps back, if we were lucky. Some of the time, the “normal” therapies didn’t work with him. Then it was come up with something that worked even if it had never been tried.
There were days and weeks of going over the same thing again and again, just trying to get something through that would stick. It was a long patient slog just to get him to something approaching normal. There were days I cried and felt like a failure. There were days I cried and felt like he was a failure. I have been through all the stages of grief so many times and sometimes all at the same time.
My point is that anything worthwhile is worth the fight. Yes there are setbacks. New trails to blaze because the old ones are overgrown. Feeling overwhelmed and frustrated because nothing seems to work. But-guess what!- sometimes it works. Sometimes it comes together and you win against the disability. He gets better and you know it was worth the fight.
Same with politics. Not every day is going to be a win. Not every day is going to be a failure. It is what it is. Take what you have and do the best you can with it. One step forward and two steps back. Whether you realize it or not, you may be dancing. The only ones who can stop us is us. We can do this dance. We have had a win this weekend after the inauguration. Now we organize, plan our next moves and dance. And as the late great Molly Ivins used to say, “Lawd, remember to have some fun.”
