Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

This really is a full service blog.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

This fight is for everything.

I was promised a recession.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Tick tock motherfuckers!

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

I suggest that any Democrat that votes to confirm Gorsuch get their ass primaried the next time they’re up for re-election so we can put in a real Democrat, assuming there are any left.

I was at the Nathan Bishop town hall. It’s usually held in the cafeteria but had to be moved to the aud, then Whitehouse had to come outside to talk to those of us who couldn’t fit inside. He was outside for a mildly hostile Q&A for 70 minutes.

It’s gonna get worse: Trump administration circulates more draft immigration restrictions, focusing on protecting U.S. jobs

The administration would be seeking to “deny admission to any alien who is likely to become a public charge” and to develop standards for “determining whether an alien is deportable . . . for having become a public charge within five years of entry” — receiving a certain amount of public assistance, including food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Medicaid.

Saw an Al Jazeera report on a foreign born doctor. He was Syrian and got his visa because he would work in an underserved area. He was in Alabama. In a county that went 72% for Dolt45. Had a picture of the 25 doctors that worked in his local hospital: only 3 were American born. But, you know…Make America great… Don’t you know..

Here we live in the age of Trump. This guy, the most misogynistic candidate, beats the first woman candidate. This is devastating to women in this country, and men too, but we’re going to feature women in these live casts and talk about equal pay, access to reproductive care. Talk about how the economic fortunes of a family are directly connected to reproductive access and the Hyde Amendment.

We have to face the facts that the Republicans have out-organized us. They simply have. I know it’s true because I got a good friend of mine who was a Republican, now a Democrat. She’s a city council member in Northfield, Minnesota. She will say, “Man, when I was Republican and I was a city council member, they connected me. I was part of this. I was part of that. I was on calls. I got data. I got talking points. Now that I’m a Democrat city council member, I feel better about my soul because this is what I believe in, but you guys don’t stay that closely in touch with us.”

The whole thing is worth reading and considering with care.

Good morning everyone. Have to leave in a couple of minutes to drive back to Chicago (2 hours each way) and I’m already tired. Better remember to support Starbucks against the rightwing boycott before noon in the future, I assume late expresso is what kept me tossing and turning all night ?

Thank you. Unfortunately, I’ve not been able to suss out a local town hall meeting with any of my congress critters. But I’m determined to move from emails/phone calls to showing up in person when I can figure out they are in town. Thanks to Balloon-Juice, I have actually created an ongoing conversation with John Cornyn, of all people, on gun control. His staff is incredibly responsive and write me back with very thorough responses. I’ve been doing research based on the last letter to get more information on a gun control proposal HE actually did propose that appears to have died in committee.

But, the point I want to make is even if your Senator or Congress critter is a complete RWNJ (i.e. John Cornyn, Ted Cruz, and Mike McFaul), you should reach out to them. They might just surprise you. John Cornyn certainly has surprised me.

It’s going to be a good day for calling Congress and the Senate. I’m still 0 for 100 in getting through to Feinstein and Harris but did speak with Doris Matsui’s staff on Fred Koramatsu’s b-day. Was encouraged to keep calling. Because she was born in an internment camp and he husband’s family was also subject to removal, the current ban is an issue that she has personal experience with and has taken a strong stand in opposition.

This from the party that slams community organizing!

They do not believe in community organizing. They believe and use top-down billionaire funded organizing. They have very wealthy people willing to put money up to fund what is needed for organizing.

Easy access to money and what it brings to an organization is the biggest difference between how conservatives sustain themselves versus liberals.

My asshole congresscritter isn’t in that list, because his scared weasel ass is afraid of town halls. He’s promised to have one, but won’t schedule. This is IL, and it won’t help that his district goes from ECentral IL to the Mississippi and close to St. Louis. He’ll probably choose to hold a town hall is BumbleFuckistan, where the 9 registered voters are Rs. And we’ll have an ice storm, so no travel there!

@Mustang Bobby: The important vote is for cloture, so we never get to a vote for confirmation. If we lose the vote for cloture, or Republicans eliminate the filibuster, it really doesn’t matter how anyone votes for or against confirmation. He is going to get confirmed.

Note, just because betrayal at the cloture stage would outrage me but I don’t care about the final vote does not mean I am telling other people they shouldn’t get outraged over whatever they feel strongest about. All outrage is good at this point. We are dealing with the constantly outrageous.

John Scalzi has an essay over at Whatever that’s bursting with good insights, of which this is a tiny portion. The whole thing is worth a read. I mean, well, duh: it’s Scalzi.

…And most of all, I’m encouraged by the millions of people from everywhere and all walks of life who went out into the streets in the last couple of weeks, and who called their elected representatives, and who donated money and time and expertise to protest against Trump and his people, and their plans, and their morality, or lack thereof. As many people have noted, the alt-right have called them “snowflakes” but you get enough snowflakes in one place and you get an avalanche.….

Well, I called Feinstein’s DC office, and while I got a message, it’s a change. The recorded message is from Dianne herself, explaining that all the lines are busy, and I can wait on hold, but the call will automatically disconnect after two minutes, so I should consider waiting a little and calling back later. So I’ll try her local offices, but at least it’s not a busy signal.
