Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Not all heroes wear capes.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

After roe, women are no longer free.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

He really is that stupid.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Republicans in disarray!

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Come on, man.

Major corporations with large market research budgets have decided that it is totally fine to oppose Trump and his policies

— Dan Pfeiffer (@danpfeiffer) February 6, 2017

For forty four and half states, that is the most important thing to think about tonight.

For the other 5.5 states and their diaspora, we’ll process that point in a couple of days.

Major corporations with *any* budget for accountants long ago learned that a dollar spent by a brown/female/gay person contributes to profit exactly as much as a dollar spent by a straight white man. That ship sailed and is over the horizon, and it ain’t coming back.

    @japa21: yes. I love Penzeys.

I must say, I was forced to watch the game with family members who are Trumpsters. They mostly kept quiet, but hated a lot of the ads…soooo political was the whine I kept hearing. F’em. I am playing dutiful daughter this weekend and counting the seconds until I can go home.

I worked here as a sports journalist for 25 years, and you learn very quickly they’re all the same guys who just wear different colored underwear. I think Brady was a chump for not cutting Trump loose way back when, but I am also sure, given the nature of their profession, that’s there’s more than one militia member gun nut wearing NFL uniforms. I will say this. What happened tonight was historic greatness on the grand scale. I can appreciate that for what it is — one of the main reasons to like watching sports.

Didn’t watch the game, only saw part of Gaga and a few ads while we ate dinner at a bar/grill in the CO rockies tonight.

But when we got back to our place, a friend had posed a list of ads he’d seen from big businesses with their broad themes of immigration, respect, etc.

He’s a minister, btw. And one of the first comments on his post was from someone who said their family was complaining about “how disgusting all the superbowl ads are this year.”

So I guess those folks live in the 5.5 states (or their equiv state of mind). Overall, though, I take it as a good sign as Pfeiffer does up top. And yes the ads may have been developed before Nov 9, but we knew the two major tickets and their respective messages for many months before that. Business was already preparing to counter Trump’s unpatriotic, unAmerican messages.

@? Martin: Brady and Trump doubtless met on the celebrity golf circuit and Trump loves jocks so they hit it off. Gotta remember Brady has spent his whole life in a smaller and less transparent bubble then even Trump has — Brady’s been a superhandsome football superhero since puberty. He’s not dumb, but he’s not very worldly. His wife, the supermodel, has had far more real world experience than he has. All the great athletes are like that. If they were more interested in the rest of life, they wouldn’t spend the time needed to be great.
PS: I thought the message of those ads had nothing to do with Trump. It was big corporations telling people “no matter what happens, your money is good with us.”

    – Science (climatology, geology, cosmology, genetics, etc.)
    – Racial and gender equality
    – The role of government in creating an economically level-field society

I have to drop this turd here.

I am fucking fed up with the stupid argument about “legal” immigration being OK, but “illegal” immigration being not OK. It’s a bullshit distinction that means nothing.

If you don’t allow people in, then you’ve made immigration illegal by definition. Thus, you can’t blame people for being “illegal”– your policies made them that way. On purpose.

In the days when my grandparents came here, a flood of uneducated people were allowed to come in here legally from poor-ass, oppressed countries. Those gates are closed now. It’s the worst kind of pulling-up-the-ladder-behind you to whine about how your grandparents or great-grandparents came here “legally” so somehow you’re better than the people risking their lives to get in here now.

And if I have to pull out the big guns, the ultimate truth is: all white people are illegal immigrants. We weren’t allowed in here to begin with, and we fought our way in with guns and ships and smallpox and TB and viral hepatitis. So the whiners can shut their pie-holes with their morally-useless distinctions between “legal” and “illegal” immigration.

    @JMG:

I was hoping Matt Ryan would tell the world he had voted for Jill Stein.

Ryan went to B C. He probably didn’t even know there was an election.

So after the Falcons scored their last point, NE beat them on yards 351-44 for the rest of the game. 351 yards in a quarter and a half. 24-3 first downs.

It didn’t feel that dominant watching it, but damn – that’s 23 minutes of getting your ass kicked hard.

@Steve in the ATL: Yeah, but the one opportunity to get one was a hell of a difficult call to make. Belichick wouldn’t have made that call either.

Made a pot of French onion soup tonight. Discovered was out of sherry (horrors!) so substituted brandy. Not bad at all.

Not quite sure what you’re asking or why. I’ve never been to Poland. My mom’s people came to America from Poland around 1895. Didn’t get much Polish military history in any classes I’ve ever taken.

@West of the Rockies (been a while): it was a subject of discussion last night. I posited that polish military peaked in the 1500’s, some less knowledgeable folks suggested that it peaked in the post WWI aftermath. I was joking when I made this comment, but I think we can all agree that, militarily speaking, sitting between Germany and Russia is a bad place to be.

Ah, gotcha. I didn’t check in here last night. Yeah, I sort of had the impression that in terms of military might, Poland is sort of the equivalent of the 70s NO Saints.

@Villago Delenda Est: Yeah, I don’t know. I didn’t think they were playing that badly. Getting backed up out of FG range and a turnover. Not good, but, c’mon, that’s a pretty normal bit of bad news for any team in half a game. NEs defense finally figured out what the hell to do, and they turned Brady loose on passing. But NE often benefits from teams running out of gas around the middle of the 3rd quarter. Once they get things to click, it’s short huddles, quick pass plays, and the other team never quite can get their shit together.

But man, that catch by Edelman saved their ass. A bit of karma from the helmet catch coming back to them. Mostly, everything rolled NEs way late in the game. When they won the coin toss for OT, I knew they had it. They were unstoppable at that point.

@Villago Delenda Est: Looking at the stats more, it looks like was a matter of changing up the game. James White now has a record 14 receptions in a Super Bowl game – White only had 60 receptions in the regular season. Atlanta was doing a good job of covering Edelman and Amendola and Bennett, so Brady just chose to hit the other guys on the team. Atlanta couldn’t cover everyone. Brady had 196 yards just in the 4th quarter. He figured out where he could complete passes.

    @Villago Delenda Est:

Falcons choked. Whoever called pass on 3D & 1 is a moron. The RB stood there and watched Hightower strip sack his QB. With the offense pretty much failing after it went up 28-3, ATL defense just got worn out.

One more first down on their last possession and they’d probably have won.

@Cacti: my husband finished his bike ride from Vancouver to Astoria at the Wet Dog Brewing. He had to get as much speed built up as possible to prepare for the long, long, LONG uphill climb.
I was following in the truck and remember listening to Lou Reed’s Heroin because I needed a distraction and to ramp down the anxiety.

Not to be an ass, but all these commercials were approved a long time ago, probably before the election. You know, when we all thought Hillary was going to win. If she were president, the story would be that super bowl commercials reflected the diverse America that brought Hillary into the White House. Done pondering.
