Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

I really should read my own blog.

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickle?”

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Putin dreamed of ending NATO, and now it’s Finnish-ed.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Spicer denies that the target of the Yemen raid was AQAP leader Qassim al-Rimi. Says it was to get intelligence.

(Or at the very least, Qassim al-Rimi’s pr0n stash… remember the hunt for Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction? Or the very nasty filthy videos said to be found at bin Laden’s compound?)

I don’t think you can call any mission in which an eight year old child is killed a success.

The WH won’t abide by the Yemen decision. They’ll continue to take actions. Trump doesn’t recognize international law – he’ll force a showdown with DHS and the military leadership.

The IKOYAR that has been in Washington for at least the past 20 years is sickening. If Obama had messed up this badly on a special ops engagement, it would have been a year-long, 24/7, wall-to-wall, mini-series/movie coupled with weekly breaking news of live tearful pain of the next 3rd removed cousin reminiscing over a member of the team who had died.

Right now, a moderate amount of 2nd page articles where the administration is woodenly proclaiming victory, coupled with awkward silence. The only reason we are getting this much is only because his administration is staggeringly incompetent and leaking like a bucket that has been a target for a week downrange of 0.50 cal practice.

And it’s only the 3rd week of his presidency.

Following 2008, the GOP played the press for all they were worth, using them to get out the GOP propaganda about everything and anything Obama did, including the bad effects his playlist would have on Malia and Sasha. Following 2010, the GOP had a House majority and absolutely no shame or reluctance whatsoever about using it to create committees to investigate Obama’s smoking habits, Hillary’s sneezes, or Solyndra’s paper clip usage and demonize any and all DEMs or anyone associated with them. Following 2012 they did the same in the Senate. Give them credit where credit is due: It worked.

    DEMs? Your turn.

This administration has had so much “alternative” winning in just 3 weeks, that I am already tired of it.

Seriously though, this concentration on Trump’s manifold inadequacies is becoming counter-productive. We know what he is and he cannot change and there is nothing to gain in facepalming about it incessantly. The real issue here are the other branches of government. So far, the Judiciary has shown some recognition of its responsibilities; Congress not.

Harry your Reps and Senators, of whatever party. Incessantly. Remind them that Congress is the primary of all branches. Original Intent was that the Presidency would be a weak institution – no more kings!

You know all those Republican Congresscritters who are running away from town hall meetings? They keep claiming that there are paid protesters and other Dems showing up from outside their districts that are mobbing these things.

That’s bullshit, of course, but I’ve thought of a way that the House Dems could call their bluff.

Pelosi and Hoyer should suggest to the GOP House leadership that all 435 Representatives should have their town hall meetings on the very same day. Pick a Saturday in early March to have time to get organized, plan town halls for all the Dem Representatives on that day, and dare the GOP to do likewise.

The idea is that maybe there could, in theory, still be paid protesters and Dems from Democratic districts mobbing GOP town halls just to cause trouble. But if all 239 GOP town halls were at the same time, the notion that Dem activists from outside were mobbing ALL of them would be totally ridiculous. Especially if the 196 Dem town halls being held at the same time were also quite well attended.

And this would make the GOP Reps either face their constituents, or explain why they were afraid to.

(Steny Hoyer is my Rep, and I’ve already left a voice mail suggesting this.)

Damn, and here I thought it had been 3 years already. The exhaustion (mine) and the incredible number of mistakes (Trump’s) couldn’t have happened in less than 3 weeks. Sigh.

@amk: The Press thrives on outrage and chaos. They are reporting on everything Trump does, for a day or 2 until the next outrageous thing comes out. It ain’t enough. What DEMs need to do is begin investigating all the corruption in the admin out of their own pockets. There is a lot of low hanging fruit in there: Starting with Bannon’s voter registration shenanigans in FL. Pretty sure that is just the tip of a large iceberg of corruption. In fact, with Trump saying our voter registration is broken, why aren’t DEMs pressing that very fact every day?

DEMs can play the press too, but what’s needed is to give them focus. Bannon should be easy to attack, he has never acted with a politicians caution and must have left a long and wide trail of slime behind him. Could be the perfect place to start at gutting this admin.
