    My dog didn’t want to get up this morning, he had a tiring, fun weekend. So I just let him put his head on my arm and sleep in for ten minutes before we went out. I was ten minutes late to work. Best ten minutes of my day.

    Ronnie-Roo and Grumpy, I am truly sorry. People say you get over it, but I disagree. I think you just learn to live with it. Scars are healing, but they are still scars.

    I’m so sorry. What a beauty.

    My six-year-old downstairs neighbor’s cat had to be put to sleep last week. He’s being brave, but he’s pretty crushed- he picked her out from the shelter as a kitten, just about two years ago. She was tiny, and stayed tiny, and it turned out she stayed tiny because she was suffering from a pretty rare blood disorder which eventually was too much for her. I feel for him. All our pets are beloved, but I think there’s a special place for the first one. My schnauzer died 30 years ago but I still sometimes dream about her.

    So sorry to hear about Mishka-Roo. Deepest condolences to Ronnie-Roo and Grumpy. We had to put our Lucky Dog to sleep last week (liver cancer – at least it was fast). I think this has been a bad year for pets.

    Sorry for your loss. But it’s amusing that depending on how you transliterate and pronounce, “Mishka” could be the diminutive word for “mouse” in several Slavic languages. Having a cat named “mouse” is kind of neat.

    I think you just learn to live with it. Hopefully you do. As you get older and the news comes more often it can be a bit more difficult. And one tends to think a bit more of one’s own which doesn’t always help.
    But still, it is what it is.

    We’re old, and have been saving cats and dogs for a long time now. I can name all the dogs, not so many of them. I tried to name all the cats, and made it all the way. We don’t name our critters quickly, we wait for them to reveal a little about their self first.

    So there were a few cats that didn’t make it that far. Not many, and I can count them, and see them in my mind’s eye easily. 6 all told in 45 years of rescue work. But all of them knew they were home, safe and sound, cared for, snuggled if they would let us. Nearly 20 cats all told, counting the two varmits we have right now.

    Thanks for the e e cummings poem, it was very appropriate. Short and both sweet and sad. He could do a lot with just a few words. I forget the famous guy who wrote a long letter to a friend, then apologized, for the length, saying he was sorry, but he just didn’t have time to write a short one.

    I’ll stop now. ETA: I kinda have to, it’s hard to type with a cat on your shoulder purring, and hanging on with those oh so sharp toenails.

    This was a rough one. Mishka isn’t the first cat we’ve lost, but the circumstances around his adoption were special, and he held a unique place in the house. He was a diva like all cats, but in such a way that was more endearing than off-putting. He had a truly unique personality, and we’ve never been able to form a bond with the other cats the way we did with him.

    @RoonieRoo: Sorry you have lost your Mishka – it’s so hard, and it’s hard to explain to people who don’t have an animal companion just how bereft you can feel – they’ll be like ‘get over it, it’s not a child, etc.’ They haven’t got a clue – I hope that soon, but only when you’re ready, that you will fill the cat-soul gap in your lives with another deserving rescue kitteh. Once a home has had a kitteh, it’s very hard not to always have one – it’s part of the soul of your home. Condolences … :-(

    Our last cat, Mickey, died 4 hours ago at 14 years old. Maybe I will get another one now, but he was one of four just a couple years ago and I haven’t replaced any of the others as they have passed.
