Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

I was promised a recession.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

There is no depth to which the Wingnut Wurlitzer will not stoop, because they are devoid of shame — and they assume their fellows have no memory of history. Norman Rockwell was not on your side, idiots!

The cartoon riffs on Norman Rockwell's "The Problem We All Live With," depicting Ruby Bridges in New Orleans' 1960 desegregation crisis. /2 pic.twitter.com/7paH2CVV4O

Emboldened, the mob kept up the pressure, using violence, vandalism & economic boycotts against anyone, black or white, opposing them. /10 pic.twitter.com/5JpxLoUaL0

The cartoonist is a crank. Here’s a link to his newspaper, The Belleville News-Democrat, and earlier work.

You’ll note Trump welcoming a white guy in a hard hat out of his “Obama shelter.” “Come on out. It’s safe again.”

And Trump drinking from a pitcher of “Chuck Schumer’s tears.”

Today’s cartoon is Flynn (in military uniform) dead to “leaks” in a “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.” The shooter is a gangster donkey.

A comment regarding Oroville and the evacuation order being lifted. I learned at the end of the day, as I was heading off to an appointment, that some of our folks were helping with the modeling for that decision. What the state wanted to know was given the forecast and snowpack and their ability to remove water from the lake, what was the likelihood that this next storm would overwhelm the dam, assuming they can keep using the main spillway. We have a top-notch hydrology/water team that was able to run that information and gave a recommendation that they’d be fine. I don’t think ours was the only team, but more eyes, and all that.

Anyway, the ability to do that analysis was because we are collecting climate data. The satellites that are measuring rainfall, snowpack, sea surface temperatures, ground temperatures, storm patterns, and all of that gave us the data to solve this problem. Without those satellites and all of that data the government collects and widely distributes, they would have had to more or less guess whether to lift the evacuation order or not. NASA is important. Climate science is important. Science in general is important. Engineering and not deferring maintenance is important.

@Calming Influence: It won’t put any of that to rest unfortunately. It’ll reduce the number of supporters of those notions, sure, but the general public is all too eager to believe that their unicorns are real, no matter how much evidence you provide to the contrary. If you accept that government can’t be run like a business, then you have to accept that all people are equal and deserving of support from the government, and that’s a notion that I think this administration (and this cartoonist) has made perfectly clear that a LOT of people are not cool with.

@? Martin: From Weather Underground, it looks like this storm will be colder that the last several. That should help if there’s more snow and less rain and we don’t get another warmer storm that then melts the snow. Long story short: Trump-voting asshole is filled with rage about Muslims, thinks EO banning them is great, then gets a lesson in compassion, hospitality, and generosity from people with turbans; head explodes. The Grauniad focuses unsparingly on the contradictions in his views and his struggle with cognitive dissonance. The San Francisco paper notes that he and his family (wife, four kids, five dogs), who are now utterly dependent on the goodwill of strange brown people, moved here three weeks ago from Kentucky and their only source of income is his firefighter disability pay.

I am a Jew and I must welcome the stranger. I am not, however, by nature a generous, compassionate soul. I SO BADLY want to kick his ass back to fucking Kentucky. Why, when I must fight my nature, does he get a pass for his?
