Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

“woke” is the new caravan.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

You can’t love your country only when you win.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

The words do not have to be perfect.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

People are complicated. Love is not.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

“Our” President-Asterisk is losing his tiny mind, and he doesn’t even have Nixon’s excuse of being extremely drunk at the time…

Trump asked about anti Semitism and racism on the rise in the US. Answers by talking about his electoral win.

— Katy Tur (@KatyTurNBC) February 15, 2017

Trump on 2/15/17: “We are very honored by the victory that we had. 306 Electoral College votes.”

— Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) February 15, 2017

this was his answer to “what will you do to stop the increase in anti-Semitism that has followed your election?” https://t.co/5BNR4OYqac

— Eric Reif (@esreif) February 15, 2017

Thank you Mr. President. Your electoral college victory is surely a great comfort to Jewish Community Centers receiving bomb threats. pic.twitter.com/QpUtJeGQBe

— Adam Schiff (@RepAdamSchiff) February 15, 2017

Apart from the absurdity of Trump's constant harping on his (genuinely narrow) Electoral College win,it's a lie that he got 306. It was 304.

BACK TO THE DAYS WHEN LIFE WAS FUN!!!

Join me in Florida this Saturday at 5pm for a rally at the Orlando-Melbourne International Airport!
Tickets: https://t.co/9jDy1tYkgE pic.twitter.com/GDhO6GGxwt

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 15, 2017

At the airport, so they can keep protesters away. https://t.co/yCVlda1r43

Spicer on POTUS event on Saturday in FL: "It's being run by the campaign"

— Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) February 15, 2017

(But paid for by us taxpayers, of course.)

The Canadians are mocking us, again…

Campaigning was fun, governing is hard. So let's go back to campaigning. https://t.co/I9IxcKfXbv

If you were to ask him about pottery traditions of 18th-century Inuits, he’d tell you how many electoral votes he got. If you were to ask him about comic foils in early Shakespeare, he’d tell you how many electoral votes he got. If you were to ask him about dentition in Australopithecus afarensis, or the topspin generated by Rafael Nadal’s backhand, or … or … or … he’d tell you how many electoral votes he got.

I bet all the passengers at that airport will be thrilled by all the extra security and traffic. On the tarmac? How’s security going to work for that? Will the airport have to shut down? I’m sure the main airport for Disneyworld and all other Orlando attractions will looooove having all air traffic halted so the president can hold a rally.

From the article Baud linked to, apparently he had an event in this hangar before.

On Sept. 27, Trump made a campaign speech at the same AeroMod International hangar. Melbourne Police Chief Steve Mimbs estimated the audience was about 8,500 inside the hangar. Thousands more people who wanted to attend could not get inside because of building capacity limits.

Not sure he’s going to have that big a crowd this time. We’ll see.

Remember he was going to meet with Putin at Reykjavik, a la Reagan and Gorbachev.

@Aleta: People like Steve King are going to regret not calling for proper investigations. From John Schindler’s latest article:

Republicans should be advised to put country over party right now and pursue rigorous inquiries into the full extent of Trump’s Moscow links and their impact on the election—and the new administration. Washington is at the precipice of a scandal unlike anything seen since Watergate. Indeed, KremlinGate promises to be much seedier and more troubling than anything proffered by President Nixon.

Here the inevitable comparisons to Watergate fall short. Tricky Dick committed domestic crimes, and paid the price for them, but Nixon was in no way beholden to a foreign power—much less one which has several thousand nuclear weapons pointed at the United States. Neither did Nixon collude with that foreign power’s spies to arrange his own election to the presidency.

We are now discussing things worse than mere impeachment. If members of Trump’s team colluded with Russian intelligence, the Espionage Act comes into play, and we’ve entered uncharted waters, presidentially speaking.

Trump is going to take Republicans down with him. How many remains to be seen. But the longer they drag their feet the more will be sucked into the mess.

For reporters it was something along the lines of that Texas flea-pit. Be it noted that W couldn’t get rid of the place fast enough once he left office – didn’t need that whole brush-cutting-man-of-the-west persona any more, y’know.

Trump doesn’t really have a home or a family in any normal sense, does he? Trump Tower and Mar-a-Lago aren’t homes or retreats; they’re business sites. The Reagans had the ranch long before they went to Washington. W had enough money to buy a big chunk of land in the middle of nowhere and build a private retreat. Reagan had plenty of nice photo ops riding a horse and looking manly in Ca., and W had his brush cutting/biking riding schtick. But most of the time they were on these ranches they were out of sight. Hell, Obama was just as slick with the body surfing/basketball photos. That’s part of the theater of politics; creating an image. Until now, presidents seemed to understand the difference between governing and imaging. I might not have approved of how many of them governed, but they all pretty much gave it a serious go, and showed some respect for the gravity and responsibility of the office. Trump only understands and cares about the insignificant celebrity aspect of the job, so of course he thinks he’s awesome because he thinks he’s the world’s #1celebrity. But he can’t even do that with any competence. He’s not in Obama’s or Reagan’s league when it comes to being photo/telegenic. His garish residences don’t compare favorably to that Crawford home which really was built in harmony with the landscape. He’s a loser at every level.

My memory is even hazier, but I think the Vietnam-clause Drinan wanted to bring into the impeachment resolution was the “secret” bombing of Cambodia — extending the war without anything like Congressional approval. (Wikipedia backs me up on that — except Drinan’s impeachment resolution was separate from Watergate.)

Listening to Susan Sarandon do her Pontius Pilate routine. It’s not her fault. It all the fault of the people who wanted to mauntain the status quo. It is better to let the public see how bad Trump is so they will join the revolution. Of course the problem is by the time Trump rolls the country back to 1820, the revolution is going to have to make up a lot of ground. She was hung up on the pipeline and the number of pipelines that exist in the country. She asked Chris Hayes if he cared about clean water. Now there are a lot of legitimate issues surrounding pipelines/pipeline safety/etc. but how/where does she think the fuel comes from for her private jet?

She also complained about fracking and Hillary’s position on fracking. Again there are a lot of legitimate issues around fracking but what is the alternative? Sure we can shutdown all of the fracking wells and resume being a net importer of oil from the middle east. That sounds like a great plan.

If Sarandon and the other guest are examples of the thinking of the Bernie wing of the democratic party and the direction they want to move in, then I guess it’s time to find another party.

The only thing missing from the interview were the promises for pink unicorns in every drive way.

they put it up for sale, and then trump bought the land between the estate and the ocean to destroy the view and the property value and bought it for $5,000,000 eventually.

upkeep for the government was a million a year. So he really fucked over the Post family

George didn’t know much about ranches when we bought the place. Andover and Yale don’t have a real strong ranching program. But I’m proud of George. He’s learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What’s worse, it was a male horse.

After a few days in the WH Trump was so impressed that it operated like a 5 star hotel. He loves that. It reminded me of an interview I saw with Laura and Babs. They said the same thing about it being like a 5 star hotel, but also said that that’s the challenge when it comes to feeling at home there because no one actually lives like that.

    @stinger:

Have you seen The Big Clock yet?

Love that film. Excellent screenplay and great performance from Charles Laughton.

    @Steve in the ATL:
Where else can ex-presidents live but neighborhoods like that? Have you checked out Obama’s new digs? The security details alone limit their choices. The Bushes had to buy 2 adjacent homes to make things work for them, and to limit disruptions for neighbors. And if you’ve ever seen the lovely Obama home in Chicago, you know they will never live there again. It isn’t workable.

@hilts: It came up the other day in a discussion of Harry Morgan/Col. Potter. He plays *quite* a different character in Clock.
