Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

This blog will pay for itself.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Let there be snark.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

People are complicated. Love is not.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Let’s finish the job.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Is the press really free & objective? Or is it associated w/ a political party? If so, that's a violation of what the Founders intended-BO'R

— Bill O'Reilly (@oreillyfactor) February 21, 2017

Just imagine if there was like, an entire news network that always agreed with one party no matter how craven, god that would be terrible. https://t.co/I2w8heKMRT

— Jesse Berney (@jesseberney) February 22, 2017

Also saying the founders believed in neutral media is like saying they rode to work on dinosaurs. https://t.co/oSpB8c0ip4

— Dave Weigel (@daveweigel) February 22, 2017

As an acquaintance once said about his cat, “Every time she blinks, she opens her eyes to a whole new world.”

Except for the grudges! Those, they can carry around for a lifetime! THANKS, REPUBLICANS!

This is not like any cat I’ve ever met. If they once see a prey animal in a location, they’ll always be expecting one to show up there again. They have fantastic memory; they just care about different stuff from humans.

I was a good boy tonight and reined in my urge to destroy. Came out of the store after work and the car next to mine had a giant assed placard on the rear deck – “Stop the sale of baby organs. Defund Planned Parenthood”. The urge to smash windows/slash tires was overwhelming. I’d have even settled for screaming obscenities at the owner, because my angry face was in full effect. I hate living in deepest, reddest Wheezeconsin some days.

I think they stopped counting after the 20th or so bird turned up on his doorstep. That’s a lot of soup (and he did in fact make that soup; donated it to a local senior center, IIRC).

Doesn’t BO’R even pretend to be a historian anymore? or even historically literate? or even capable of googling the “History of American Newspapers”? The articile in Wikipedia (from which all knowledge flows) has ten paragraphs on the topic of “Partisan Newspapers” before they get out of the 1700s. Including this gem from the “founders”:

Noah Webster, strapped for money, accepted an offer in late 1793 from Alexander Hamilton of $1,500 to move to New York City and edit a Federalist newspaper.

@Sherparick: Let’s also not forget that Hamilton also founded the NY Post in 1801 to basically talk shit on Jefferson, Burr, and the rest of the new Democratic-Republicans in office. And how as late as 2015, it still held that grudge:

We’ll never have Paris here in New York. But we could have . . . if not for Aaron Burr.

    [snip]

Mangin’s design was better, but Latrobe was furious, and Burr was vengeful. Conveniently, the city’s top (and only) street official was one Joseph Browne, recently appointed through the influence of Burr. Oh, and Browne was Burr’s brother-in-law and willing partner in a lifetime of schemes. By November 1803, after relentless trashing by Browne, Mangin’s “New Map of this City” was the discarded map of the future city.

An example of the partisan nature of early-American newspapers: the Adams Administration (Federalists) used the Alien and Sedition Acts to jail editors from Democratic-Republican (or Jeffersonian-Republican) newspapers in the late 1790s.

More confirmation that the US government is presided over by a two year old, as though more was needed.

The key to keeping Trump’s Twitter habit under control, according to six former campaign officials, is to ensure that his personal media consumption includes a steady stream of praise. And when no such praise was to be found, staff would turn to friendly outlets to drum some up — and make sure it made its way to Trump’s desk.

“If candidate Trump was upset about unfair coverage, it was productive to show him that he was getting fair coverage from outlets that were persuadable,” said former communications director Sam Nunberg. “The same media that our base digests and prefers is going to be the base for his support. I would assume the president would like to see positive and preferential treatment from those outlets and that would help the operation overall.”

Similar technique used in managing the toilet training process:

“You haven’t tweeted anything insulting, insane or inane today! Oh, what a good boy you are! Let’s watch this nice Fox News program, and then we’ll have some ice cream! How about that?”

@Pogonip: we have a cat that is ocd. She establishes a habit and never adapts. We fed her on a small sewing table so the older cats couldn’t steal her food as they no longer jumped high. When we dropped treats she comes running sniffs and then runs to the food table. And waits. In 8 years she never learned to eat food somewhere else even when she begged. She also seems to sometimes dimly remember that as a kitten one bedroom was hers even though it’s been my nephews for 7 years. She is afraid of the active boy and runs out alarmed. She is kind of afraid of most things. Just doesn’t like change. A year ago she had a sudden personality change and now likes to cuddle. We are puzzled but happy.

When I worked in professional sports we had a participant that the general consensus was that every sunrise was a new start. He was a good guy, a good participant, he just seemed like the sun coming up was a reset button. Can’t remember who came up with this but it was pretty universally accepted. Irony (and hypocrisy) thy name is Billo the Clown. Also pretty sure the Founders would take issue with an American President being compromised by a foreign power and pretty much the entire legislative branch (aside from Democrats) just shrugging their collective shoulders at it. What a POS.
Edit: weigel’s right. I remember reading on wiki about old newspapers and how partisan they could be. Nothing is new under the sun except of course massive media consolidation.

    @Eric S.:
    I know him!
OK I saw that the person you work with is a woman but we have a guy who has to be shown how to do most everything and he’s worked here for over a decade. He does have a few things that he knows how to do without info, but only because he’s done a particular operation 100s of times. You ask him to do a similar operation on a machine he’s run dozens of times and he just doesn’t get it. And it’s not just me, everyone can show him how to do things and he just doesn’t get it unless you hound him. I can and have dealt with people with learning disabilities, I have a lot of patience but people who don’t know/understand the job/operation and then argue with me when I tell them how something needs to be done just don’t get any slack.

I think I saw that Betty Price had declined to run. But it’s a big field.

For my sins, I got to know Tom and Betty fairly well (socially, not intimately by any means) over the years, going back to when he was a state senator. Betty is Canadian, and graduated from McGill University, and as academic relations officer I dealt with alumni from Canadian universities. As long as the context wasn’t political I found them both affable people, but I wouldn’t vote for either of them for any office.
