Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

This blog will pay for itself.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

White supremacy is terrorism.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

    Love This. Buttons and all.

And although Rep Ellison covered this better than I can, I’ll just say, unless a critic can say something about Perez’ work at Labor, improve on Perez’ work standing up against excessive use of force, or show any knowledge of who Trujillo was, I don’t have time for their beefs.

    LOTS of work to do!

I am glad Tom Perez got picked. Nothing wrong with Keith Ellison but I think Perez will be motivated to do a good job at the DNC because he wants to be on the POTUS ticket at some point.

I honestly feel like we got the best of both worlds — we get Perez full-time as the head and Ellison part-time as the deputy chair while keeping his House seat. The Perez/Ellison team feels so encouraging and constructively right-minded. Coming off of DWS, Hillary and Bernie, this feels fresh and energized.

Also feel like our bench is building and will get deeper: Gillibrand, Franken, Harris as examples. Patty Murray and Elizabeth Warren working in the trenches. The next generation of Dems is rising, and it could be pretty exciting. Plus all the activism arising….I feel better and more optimistic lately. Issa on the ropes and scared for his future calling for an independent investigation of Trump admin and Russia….we just have to keep chipping away at it.

I think it is possible that he is a real new guy who is working through things.

He claims to be new, at least as far as commenting here, as I’m sure you saw. But “working through things” is an interesting way of putting it.

I guess I’m of the opinion that a DNC Chair who is making a big effort to be the “face” of the Party (as new guy seems to want) is spending less time on doing what he should be doing — ensuring there are good candidates for every damn elected office in the country (within reason), making sure the ground game is kick-ass, doing his utmost to ensure voter-registration suppression gets nullified as much as possible, and ensuring that there is someone who shouts to the MSM every time Shitgibbon/Bannonazi commits another crime against America.

And, no, I don’t expect Perez to do everything himself. You said in the other thread, it’s administrative work; I agree (to a point), but it’s also managerial work, and a good manager can delegate to competent staff, and still keep an eye on things.

    @Omnes Omnibus:

And New Guy, while verbose (says the overly-wordy yours truly), has not exhibited what some would call “critical thinking skills.” Most of his “analysis” is superficial at best, and he appears to be drawing incorrect conclusions from available data. [One minor example: he said he’s been reading here for a long time, but also said no one knew who DWS was until the Bernie thing blew up. Yeah, not quite.] I’m complaining here because I really don’t want to get into a back-and-forth with him, because overcoming his vapidity would be pointless/fruitless.

“The Way to Eden”: In this episode, the Enterprise is hijacked by a madman-scientist and his fanatical, hippie-like followers who are blindly obsessed in finding a mythical planet of perpetual paradise.

They don’t call such material classic for nothing. The themes and archetypes never stop repeating.

    Also too, relevant:

“Patterns of Force” (photo): After returning to the Enterprise, Spock expresses confusion as to how Gill could make such a mistake emulating the Nazis. Kirk explains that the problem was not the Nazis themselves but giving any one individual so much power.

ETA: Yeah, boy, that Julius Caeser was some corporatist. That’s why the Brutusbros offed him.

@Mnemosyne: Well, thanks to Trump all the Democrats are just as loud now. It’s notable that most of the town halls are full of people over 40.

I just had a Berniebro tell me I was straightsplaining identity politics to him. I am putting that into my record book. A white gay man is offended by my feeling that progressives still fighting the Dem party are prioritizing economics over my issues and feels I’m straightsplaining.

@ruemara: I had one ask a friend if it meant we wouldn’t rig the next primary when the friend expressed hope and happiness that both Tom & Keith would lead the party.
I told him I hoped the screen door didn’t hit him as he flounced out.

Him: Who said anything about leaving? I may vote Green, but that doesn’t mean I won’t fight corporatism”
Me: That’s the definition of leaving the party. Good for you, spending your vote on only the purest candidates
Him: That actually isn’t, I’m just independent with a love for the Green Party. Get your facts straight
Me: oh, so you’re not even a Democrat. Thanks for all of your advice.

I walked away from the discussion because who can even deal with that kind of nonsense?

I had a berniebro tell me I’m racist for not signing on to the Perez is an evil neo-liberal. I’m not white, the bro in question was. It brings me back to the memes these assholes used about MLK and St. Bernie marching with him. They don’t give a shit about people of color except to use them as a club to beat people who don’t follow them without question.

@? Martin: Yes! A lot of the people in marches are over 40, many of them well over 50.

@Zam: These are the same kind of lefty guys I disliked in college, late 60s, early 70s. Some were a little charismatic and had girls hanging around them but treated them like less than.

@opiejeanne: Yea I wouldn’t say that much about the bro in question, he is bisexual and I trained him as an organizer, but he has completely disregarded the idea that racism is inherent in our society that needs to be dealt with in a different way than the economic ways his version of progressivism espouses.

@opiejeanne: I just told him I was so offended at him coming at me like that, WOC, who frankly he doesn’t know how I identify, who’s dealt with more than he knows, he can stop commenting on my page right now. I will not play oppression Olympics, like there’s a prize. I feel so mad, I’m going to donate to a voter’s rights group and a trans group. He said no politician had ever done anything on the suppression issue, so I helpfully pointed to Perez’s work in the DOJ & the CBC.

@Raven Onthill: It would have been nice (and encouraging messaging) but we still got a massive upgrade over DWS and Perez and Ellison like each other and hang out together.

If we gotta have one of the only two parties crushed and turned into rubble + a third party without the ability to enact change, I would prefer that to happen to the Republicans.

My only problem with Tom Perez is that, being a boomer and a baseball fan, I keep wanting to call him “Tony Perez”. And the really weird thing about that is Donald Trump is really the guy who’s part of the Big Red Machine now.

But not to worry. I’ll persist and learn to call him Tom.

Congrats to him and Ellison, too.

Perez/Ellison may turn out to be what is needed. But after what we had to put up with from DWS (and remember who supported her!) even Keith Olbermann’s “Squirrel” would be a vast improvement.

Of course, that raises the question re: whether Shitgibbon or Pete Rose is the bigger asshole. Although, in fairness to Rose — whom I pretty much detest — he worked his ass off to become what he was (in baseball terms, that is). The day that Shitgibbon does an honest hour’s worth of work — never mind a day’s worth — is a lo-o-o-o-o-o-ng way off.

ETA: By the way, “Big Red Machine” is outstanding. Thanks!

And the baddie in both of those, Patterns of Force and Way to Eden, is the same actor. so, there’s that, too.
