Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

I really should read my own blog.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Let’s finish the job.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Second rate reporter says what?

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

This blog will pay for itself.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Bark louder, little dog.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Late Night Open Thread: In the Room Where It Happened

?? Here's audio of what @seanspicer said at a press gaggle where certain media outlets were blocked from attending https://t.co/UVBA6wxHob pic.twitter.com/8zWskdydzT

— POLITICO (@politico) February 24, 2017

Of course, the craziest thing about this is that Spicer, who lies on a regular basis, is complaining about "false stories"

— Michael Cohen (@speechboy71) February 24, 2017

Note to media: If you’re still in the room, that means the WH approves of your tone and content. https://t.co/8neThbuR2X

— Seth Masket (@smotus) February 24, 2017

And now, the topic of the evening is the media outlets excluded, not the Priebus interactions w FBI + question of open investigation.

— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) February 24, 2017

Good first step, @PressSec. Always smart to free up the best reporters to dig around in your stuff, without interruption of your briefings.

— Marcus Brauchli (@mbrauchli) February 24, 2017

Hope it gives editors more motivation to put resources in to finding more so it's a bigger story Sun & Mon https://t.co/lYH9zwWxcW

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) February 24, 2017

@DanaHoule It's also not important. There is exactly zero journalism happening at those briefings.

— Alex Hazanov (@alexhazanov) February 24, 2017

But _this_ point is important. Press should report that White House did this on a day that the news for WH was bad, transition to Priebus https://t.co/l9mo42ujln

I saw AC360 over dinner – he was all about Russian emails, not about his network being excluded.

They let the Washington Post in? Or had they been banned previously?

@Thoroughly Pizzled: looks like the Post had better up its game a bit.

@Thoroughly Pizzled: They were let in. That they were let in hints that the outlets excluded were the ones that Trump must have randomly ranted about this morning.

A group of my work friends is going hiking at 7:30 am tomorrow morning. I was hoping to join them, but it’s 1 am, and I’m not sure that going on a long hike on 6 hours of sleep would be the best idea. We’ll see how I feel when the alarm goes off, I guess.

I assume since the excluded news organisations went to bat for Fox News when they had that little contretemps with Obama several years ago, that Fox went in to bat for the others and refused to take part in the briefing.

    No, seriously folks, stop laughing!

Did anyone notice that Muhammad Ali Jnr was detained and questioned at Fort Lauderdale airport today? The authorities asked him “Are you a Muslim?” and “Where did you get that name?”. Sharp as tacks, those guys.

WTF they banned Politico!? Somebody is not in touch but I am not sure which somebody that is . Kudos to AP. I honestly did know AP had it in them. Leaves lots of time for actual reporting. New world for the youngsters.

I had a D’oh! moment when I realized that Trump is his own best Minister of Propaganda. Watched him call the media fake news to whip up the crowd in the same way that he labeled Jeb low energy, etc.

His supporters eat this stuff up and the labels stick, becoming part of the national conversation. And Trump has the bully pulpit as president and can keep this going throughout his term.

His most rabid supporters have easily moved from the idea that the media is a bunch of biased liberals to the embracing the idea that the media is the enemy of America. For these people, Trump has inoculated himself against any negative future revelations about anything. He has also given the GOP in Congress extra cover to back his play.

And with this comes another easy slip further into Authoritarianism. Who would have guessed that conservatives who help so much about liberty would be the ones yearning so hard for their master’s leash?

Meanwhile, let’s see what the press does with this opportunity. Currying favor will gain them little, so they might as well dig in and go after Trump as hard as they can.

For as long as they can.

    These people are beyond stupid.

Stupid? Is Ali now magically from one of the 7 “dangerous nations” or has profiling of all Muslims now become official standard operating procedure?

What’s next? Yellow crescent patches so that American Muslims can more easily be identified?

Multiple campaigne operatives had multiple contacts with multiple Russian intel operatives. Administration lobbying FBI and Congressional chairs to soft pedal the investigations. Freezing out media that is airing Russian Connections story.
They are busted and they know it. Now they just are trying to stall for time. How fast can they scare up a war or maybe scare up a terrorist attack so any questions can be spun as disloyalty to “USA! USA! USA!” ?
It’s the same old song and dance the GOP plays every time they get caught with their filthy hand in the cookie jar. And it will lead to the same old disaster. War, economic loss, diminished faith in our government. That last is a feature not a bug.

@Amir Khalid: -Well-, *they* call it “white nationalism”. But *we* call it white supremacy, which is what it is. Gotta say: drives the wanna-be-respectable ones cray-cray. Truly cray-cray. They don’t wanna hear this about themselves.

I just wish I could keep a grip on my own feelings in the presence of such evil — I could have so much fun trolling the few Trumpists I know (erm: “used to know”).

I am thinking this press ban is the Narcissist capitulating. It certainly and idiot move as a politician since the MSM has no reason now not to savage the Trump admin. Ironically, Donald Dumbass Trump may have ended the Courtier Press.

@Brachiator: They’ll be green crescents, [email protected]Brachiator: The thing about authoritarian leaders is, once they show weakness or are shown by events to be weak, their support crumbles. tRump is incompetent, so it’s a matter of time and, for the left, damage control. That’s why the strong resistance from day 1, and maintaining that energy, is important. This is my best take on what passes for optimism. Tomorrow I might be “we’re doomed and America deserves its own destruction”. Might be related to the weather.
