On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Folks,
We’re trying a new feature here, so let’s see how it goes for the next week or so before it’s fully automated.
This post is for Balloon Juicers who are on the road, travelling, etc. and wish to share notes, links, pictures, stories, etc. from their escapades. As the US mainland begins the end of the Earth day as we measure it, many of us rise to read about our friends and their transient locales.
So, please, speak up and share some of your adventures, observations, and sights as you explore, no matter where you are.
Have at ’em, and have a safe day of travels!

Buy a man an airline ticket and he will fly for a day.
Push a man out of an airplane and he will fly for the rest of his life.

Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant)
I am home again, this time to lay my father to rest. He passed peacefully in his sleep. Kinda numb at the moment because it’s just now been a year since Mrs. Cisco died.
You don’t get better, you just get better at it.

I’m so sorry, Ben. Please be gentle with yourself. Sending a big hug.

@Schlemazel: That was good for a deep belly laugh. Thank you!

Good Morning from the funky Cameron Trading Post,Motel, and Restaurant. Had an awesome morning yesterday at Mary Colter’s ? Watch Tower at the less used Desert View entrance to the Grand Canyon (basically should have stayed at that end of the South Rim or at the Hermit’s Rest end all day because in that hell hole of Grand Canyon Village I was dodging Asian tourists with selfie sticks and young American women with dogs in purses…a Maltese is going to get decapitated, I tell you). 23 degrees and very windy. The Grand Canyon is spectacular as we all know…here once with my parents in the early 1970’s. I remember nothing about the Watch Tower and Hermit’s Rest from that trip. Have a bit of a Mary Colter and Fred Harvey theme to this trip…read three books on them, her designs, history, and the history of travel to the SW and the Grand Canyon. Tell Ozark, I think I’m heading to Sedona today for a day trip. Poco had difficulty with the concepts of dogs in purses and what guard rails are for. He spent most of the day in his bedroom in the 2 bedroom (Ford) Escape. Have a great day, guys. Thanks for all the interest and comments.

I am so, so sorry. I lost my mother a little over a year ago and my dad in 2008. It’s tough. All three of us were only children. Our own little tribe. Hang in there. It does get better but it’s never the same. Peace be with you.

Heading out shortly for two days (the correct days this time) of knitting and fun at the New England Textile Arts Spa weekend. This time my mom is staying with a friend and kid came home to watch the dog.

It’s a stupid joke that is well past its sell-by date. It’s no longer funny; it has started to sound creepy.

Sorry for your loss.

@Schlemazel:
Love this at #7. Missed it when I was first “blowing” through the comments. Going to have to remember it. Is it a Schlemazel original?
Elizabelle
@Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant): Sorry to hear that. Condolences.
@Quinerly: Yes! Give Mary Colter, architect of La Posada and other works, some love. I did not know about her work near the Grand Canyon, but that makes sense.
Enjoy Sedona. Will you and Poco be checking out Jerome at any point? Cottonwood is also nice.
Tenar Arha (same Tenar, more Nameless Ones)
@Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant): My condolences.
Another Scott
@Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant): Sincere condolences, Ben. You’ve been through a lot the last few years. Remember the good times.
Wishing you peace and comfort.
Cheers,
Scott.

@Elizabelle:
So glad you piped in! La Posada has been one of the highlights of the trip. Needed more time there. If you haven’t done it, check out all things Tina Mion on line. As for Mary Colter, much of this trip was inspired by reading about her. The book that started it all a few years back was “Appetite for America (mostly about the Fred Harvey empire). Suggested Mary books: “Mary Colter: Architect of the SW,” “Watch Tower at Desert View,” “Mary Coulter: Builder Upon the Red Earth.” Finally, a great little book called “Over the Edge.” It’s about the Santa Fe RR coming to the Grand Canyon and covers 5 (maybe 6) of her buildings here. Yes, I’m a traveling nerd. I research these long trips and stops 6 months in advance.?

I’m sorry for your loss. And you are right, it never gets easy/easier, we just become a little better at dealing with.
Take care of yourself, after the flurry of immediacy is over. Take your time with everything, no need to hurry now…
