Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

When we show up, we win.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

People are complicated. Love is not.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Highlighting the CBO and the ACA

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has a nice 350+ page summary of what they did estimated and evaluated in the policy development process for what eventually became the ACA/PPACA.

It was an iterative process. And these are just major milestones. There were calls for frequent CBO advisory scores and holding delays of 72 hours for CBO analysis to be digested by the Senate.

Just keep this in mind as the current bill is sitting under lock and key in a Capital Hill basement somewhere.

Wasn’t there a right wing meme about Pelosi saying people would have to wait to read the bill?

@Baud: she did say it but of course context is everything. To me she was saying you don’t know what’s going to happen until the law is in effect. You have a lot of smart people who you think have thought every scenario through but it’s a massively complicated law and there will undoubtedly be unintended consequences. I’ve never understood this RW thing about stuff having to be simple and super short. Jeezus, if you have surgery the surgeon alone writes several pages of notes . Why do they expect a tax return to be postcard sized and a big Healthcare law be one page?

    @mai naem mobile:
If you read the whole comment, not just the part that was taken out of context, it turns out she was saying there was so much misinformation surrounding the bill that nobody could keep it straight, and the only way we’d be able to separate the truth from the fiction was to see it in action.

It’s because they aren’t very smart.

Truly, it’s because they think that governance isn’t something that requires skill or experience or refined judgment. They think it just takes “common sense” and Jeebus ass-kissing. Lots of words smacks of snooty college education and intellectualism = LIEBERAL PLOT to make them feel bad.

We just got back from seeing Fun Home. We had to wait to leave the theater at the end because I couldn’t stop crying, but in a good (cathartic) way. It was much more about missing your dead father than I expected, so it hit both G and I right in the feels.

@mai naem mobile: Everything in politics is simple and it can be done by amateurs with common sense and a few hours of light reading. The government budget is just like my checkbook. We have all the laws we need anyway so why pass any legislation? The woods out here are full of folks that think this way.
