Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

This blog will pay for itself.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Republicans do not pay their debts.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Infrastructure week. at last.

We need to have Trump go. Pence takes over. Chooses, hmm, Hillary Clinton as his VP. Then, Pence goes and HRC is president.

Actually, there is no conceivable scenario that would put a reasonable person in the presidency if Trump, Pence, and any of the others who entered the picture all disappeared.
That’s because the GOP is rotten to the core. Anyone Pence would choose would be at least as bad. Who knows, he might choose Ryan.

@TriassicSands: There’s a theory (well, more than a theory) that engagement in demos and such causes people to become -more- committed and more active in politics generally. So that, once having agitated and worked to rid themselves of Dampnut, our co-citizens will do the same to rid themselves of his leftovers, ZEGS, Yertle, & co. I sure hope it’s true. Gonna be a long slog, -after- we dispatch Smallgloves. Best case, of course.

    @Chet Murthy:

I can see that being engaged in “demos” as you call them would empower people to become more engaged in general. But getting rid of presidents is a big deal, we’ve never done it. So, while there may be hope of getting rid of Trump, who is the most vulnerable by virtue of being a monumental POS and complete loon, it’s hard for me to see the appetite for slaying kings, so to speak, not waning after one victim. But no matter what the appetite, we don’t have a means to replace a Republican with a Democrat, and I can’t think of any Republican, offhand, that I would want as president. True, there are some who are better, but that’s a relative term and it doesn’t mean anything like good.

On the other hand, I would enjoy each and every casualty — whether it be one or many.

Sure we do. A Democratic House majority could file articles of impeachment in January 2019. The new, obviously ascendant Democratic majority in the Senate gets a number of prominent crossover votes from the Republicans to impeach Donald Trump, then Mike Pence, then anybody else who takes office and might be complicit in the Russian collusion.

    Or, you know, 2020.

Good to know. Obviously, you’ve taken the NRA’s “gun safety class.”

On a more serious note: I was in the hospital ER once (delivering someone else) and they brought in a teenager who had, in fact, been cleaning his 12-gauge shotgun when it was loaded. They rushed the kid into the OR (he lost the leg). Meanwhile, his father sat in the ER, crying, and repeating over and over “I made sure he went to the gun safety course (or class?). I made sure he went…” It was very sad. I feel fortunate to have come from a household in which the NRA was never mentioned and guns played no role in our lives (though my father did have a small pistol). Of course, that was before the NRA became completely unhinged and guns became sacred items worthy of cult worship.

    Again (emphasis added).

Police in a Seattle suburb were looking for a gunman Saturday who shot a Sikh man in the arm and told him to “go back to your own country,” the Seattle Times reported.
    [snip]
“I am sorry to know about the attack on Deep Rai, a US national of Indian origin,” said [India’s] foreign minister Sushma Swaraj. “I have spoken to Sardar Harpal Singh, father of the victim.”
    [snip]
Rai told police in the Seattle suburb of Kent that the shooter is 6-foot-tall, white and has a stocky build. He said the man was wearing a mask covering the lower half of his face. Source

The mask, to this layperson, screams premeditation.

I won’t dismiss the possibility that Republicans could screw up so royally that Democrats could take one or both houses in 2018, but I wouldn’t bet a penny today on it happening. The Democrats are defending so many seats in the Senate and the Republicans so few that turning the Senate will be extraordinarily difficult. The problem in the House is gerrymandering. I plan on working to achieve that, but, as I said, I wouldn’t bet on it happening (from the vantage point of March 2017).

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Which would be cool. On the other hand, the Speaker doesn’t have to be a member of Congress. For political comity, Democrats should elect a wildly popular non-Congressmember as Speaker — one who was not only experienced in the role into which he would be elevated by the successive impeachments, but also could not run again in 2020 to make it palatable to wavering Republicans. Yep, you guessed it. Thanks — Obama!

The same as any highly placed Wall Streeter,: Trump is a pennyante grifter.

I think that Trump figured out he and his cohorts were being wiretapped, and that the real s**t is about to hit the fan. Hearing Chris Coons telling Comey Friday to release the transcripts made me realize that transcripts do exist and they must be damning or they wouldn’t still be around. If the transcripts were exculpatory, the matter would have been dispensed with and no one would be the wiser. Trump now has to make whatever comes out to look like a hit job by The Angry Negro. That would at least satisfy the racism and hatred at the core of his support, and give the tv heads something to ponder while they blather their bothsiderism.

I actually heard one of the tv nuts say yesterday that if in fact Obama ordered an illegal wiretap on Trump it would rival the Watergate scandal. Uh huh. In fact Obama got Hillary to help him install the bugs.

Seriously, even if Trump alone resigns and takes his gang of traitorous advisors with him, Pence won’t have a free ride to to a God-damned thing without a huge fight. And I seriously predict after 2018 the R’s are highly likely to lose their majority in the Senate, which puts a stop to the madness.
