Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickel?”

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Even though I know this is a bad idea, I’m off to do it anyway!

Washington (CNN)The White House said Tuesday President Donald Trump earned more than $150 million in income and paid $38 million in taxes in 2005 even after taking into account large scale depreciation for construction.

The White House put the information out ahead of an anticipated MSNBC news report about the returns.
The $38 million was in addition to “paying tens of millions of dollars in other taxes such as sales and excise taxes and employment taxes,” a White House official said.
“You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago,” the official said Tuesday.

Leisure studies is a branch of the social sciences that focuses on understanding and analyzing leisure. Recreation and tourism are common topics of leisure research.

The National Recreation and Park Association is the national organization in the United States for leisure studies, and offers accreditation to many universities to offer courses of study (degree programs) in leisure studies.

The Journal of Leisure Research[1] and Journal of Park and Recreation Administration are some[2] scholarly US academic journals of leisure studies.

Leisure studies is a strong major for individuals who value working with a wide variety of people including children, the elderly, and the disabled.[3] Those pursuing this major will often be in situations where they have to motivate others, so it is important that they are creative, hard-working, in good health, and possess leadership skills.

    NYTimes headline right now:

President Trump made a rare disclosure about his finances. He paid $38 million in federal taxes on income of $150 million in 2005.

Um…that’s not a story that harms Trump. Since the leak of 1995 return, the story/speculation was that Trump had paid ZERO taxes in the past 18 years.

This showed he paid $38 million. Great scoop, Rachel!

@Adam L Silverman: I can’t stand to watch any of MSNBC any more, so I didn’t see the show.

Wasn’t there some story before the election about his state taxes, with the implication that some state could possibly release it/them?

I doubt that this came from inside the current IRS. It seems more likely to have come from one of his many lawsuits, state regulatory agencies, etc., rather than from inside any official government agency.

Anyway, this particular 1040 doesn’t matter much. Yeah, it’s the Forms and Schedules and all the rest that fills up the bankers boxes that matters.

What does matter about this, though, is whether the GOP in Congress decides to use this as a pretext for a stepping-up of the war against the IRS. They already want to gut the place. If they can convince their voters that this “obviously” came from inside the IRS, then they’ll (at least think) they have enough backing to gut the agency even more. And then look out when it comes to “businesses” (like the neighbor who claims to have a DBA) and corporations going wild with trying to get out of federal taxes.

I assume DCJ is smart enough to recognize when he’s being played, so I assume it’s not from inside Trump’s people as a false-flag kinda thing. But who knows…

This proves he was paying taxes for at least one year. Granted, I still think Trump(and his children and son-in-law) is corrupt, and likely involved in multiple illegal schemes with both the Russians and Chinese. Given that this takes pressure off of the Trumpcare/Ryancare debacle and the Russian influence stuff and allows the President to play the victim, I think she got played.

Johnston has very publicly set up a new reporting shop in DC to look into the President and all of his financial dealings. This is not a step forward in the move to get Trump held accountable. By any body.

With all due respect, you guys need to CTFD. Go read some Adam Khan and John Schindler and Kurt Eichenwald’s stuff and you’ll begin to have hope again. This is another small yet-nicely-juicy piece of a puzzle that will help connect significant dots and help the media open up a lot of questions about Trump’s associations and whether or not he’s a big fucking liar.

Also, the awesomeness of figuring out who actually leaked the damn POS. THAT will be a fascinating story when it hits, and it will hit.

Plus: he might actually Tweetle sometime between now and 6am, and you should know by now just how AWESOME those Tweetles end up being for our side.

    Just stay positive.

@Corner Stone: Re: Hayes program last night. Cole is a West Virginian, I am. But No, guessing not many in red states watch much Rachel. But do you think that is Rachel’s or MSNBC’s audience, or this blogs? In Solzhenitsyn’s books he often wrote that the narrator would be shocked to find himself unexpectedly looking into the face of an intellectual. And like maybe it was a lady scrubbing floors who had been demoted from the professional class. I grew up in Appalachia & struggle with the paradox of the people around me. I watched the McDowell Co./Hayes program. I have always worked to help but have been so frustrated to see so many shoot themselves in the foot. Reach those communities & you have really done something.

So, after all the alarums and excursions, we learn that Trump paid $38 million in taxes on $150 million income (25.3%) and there was no Form 1099 from BadenovCollusion Inc.
    I am disappoint.

Supposedly DCJ has a story about the return on his new web site – DCReport.org, but apparently the site has crashed due to all the traffic… FWIW.

I’m no expert but the “Client Copy” stamp doesn’t mean that Donnie leaked it, 12+ years is a long time for a paper copy of a document to be kept from “prying eyes” if someone is really interested, and I’d assume that Donnie really doesn’t want to talk about his taxes (he’s trying to keep the Congress from investigating him, after all).

And paying $31M via the AMT isn’t exactly a glowing recommendation that everything he’s doing is on the up-and-up, either. But he has said he wants to scrap it (WARNING: Autoplay video on the page, and typical CNBC propoganda in the whole piece):

“It was originally targeted at the super-wealthy when it came out, but the super-wealthy in most cases don’t pay it,” said certified public accountant Scott M. Aber, owner of his eponymous accounting firm in Rockland County, New York. Despite the original intent of the tax, the super-rich now typically pay more in regular income tax than they would under AMT, so the AMT has evolved into a surtax on the middle and upper middle class.

Taxpayers with lots of itemized deductions must figure their tax returns twice and pay whichever is higher: the AMT or their regular tax. The AMT denies deductions for things such as dependents and payments for real estate and state taxes.

Oh, those poor folks – they make so much money that they have to figure their taxes twice. It’s such a burden. It’s a shame that they can’t pay someone to do that calculation for them. Or maybe someone should invent something like a “computer program” that makes that job easier. I wonder why that hasn’t happened yet?!?

More seriously, I guess Donnie really isn’t “super wealthy” after all, huh. ;-)

Will this have legs? Dunno. But I don’t think it helps him very much at all. He wants people to forget about his taxes, not be talking about them while he’s trying to say how great he is at creating jobs and MAGA and keeping DC safe from the snowstorm and ….

    Cheers,
    Scott.

I am guessing “Client Copy” means the copy the accounting firm gives to the client.

There are lots of reasons a person would share a 1040 with another organization, to prove income — loans, mortgages, and in the case of lower income people… (wait for it…) subsidized health insurance under the ACA. It’s quite possible this is a copy of the Client Copy leaked from somewhere outside of Trump’s organization.
