Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

This really is a full service blog.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

It’s the corruption, stupid.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Wednesday Evening Open Thread: Everybody Fake Surprise Now

Analysis | Devin Nunes confirms it: The evidence of Trump Tower being wiretapped just doesn't seem to exist https://t.co/EnqUaHHNTI

— Ellen Nakashima (@nakashimae) March 15, 2017

Chris ‘Mad Bitcher’ Cillizza, now that he’s on the way out the door at the Washington Post, decides to demonstrate he can so commit journalism if he feels like it:

… Against such strong denials from people in a position to know, the White House has offered up, well, not much. Trump has largely gone silent since making the allegations 10-ish days ago. His White House senior aides have been backpedaling; the latest being White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s decidedly odd argument that “wire tapping” and wiretapping are simply not the same thing. (Breaking news: They are!)

As I wrote at the time that Trump leveled these very serious allegations: The burden of proof was on him. To suggest that a former president orchestrated a listening program using the tools and resources of the federal government during a heated national campaign is a big charge. To do so without providing evidence — then or now — is eye-popping.

The repercussions of such charges should be serious. After all, this is conspiracy theorizing at the top levels of government. But they almost certainly won’t be, as a Republican Congress is unlikely to scold a Republican president so new to the White House. And Trump, if past is prologue, will somehow declare victory and move on.

Thanks, Repubs!

Apart from the healthful exercise involved in rolling our eyes, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

The administration consists of complete goofs.
The horrid disasters will be endless.
What will happen at the Thanksgiving Day turkey pardon? Could well turn into a bloodbath.
Will we need hazmat teams for the Easter egg roll on the WH lawn? Will the Easter Bunny survive?
How many states will have a multi-day blackout when they try to turn on the WH Christmas Tree.
I worry about these things. Someone has to.

Did anybody else catch Grassley and Feinstein coming out of the meeting with Comey? Feinstein spoke for both her and Grassley (?!?) and said the material was too sensitive to comment on. For once, her years of pearl clutching resulted in an understated performance, subtly underscored by biting her lower lip. That may have been to suppress a smile the size of Cleveland. Anybody else catch that?

In 2009 my guy and I went to DC to participate in the National Equality March. The day before the march we celebrated 10 years together. The march was amazing but on the way home I couldn’t shake the feeling that marriage equality would ever happen in my lifetime. I even told my partner that I wish I was a bit younger to be able to see how this was going to play out.

Since it’s an open thread, I’d like to turn the conversation to something serious.

Over at Gin And Tacos, Ed urges us not to let a 1040 from 2005 distract us :
    http://www.ginandtacos.com/2017/03/14/more-like-rachel-much-ado-amirite/

There are two possibilities to explain the random release of a random piece of tax information about Donald Trump. Three if you count coincidence.

One is that Trump had these released as a red herring to redirect attention away from additional revelations about his Russian ties that may be coming out this week. Or, in a less Machiavellian sense it may just be an effort to garner attention that has been drifting away from him and toward the stillborn House GOP health care bill.

The other is that Donald Trump is a very vain, dumb, and predictable person, and that somebody – perhaps a fired U.S. Attorney who was leading the investigation into DeutscheBank’s ties to Russian organized crime and money laundering – wanted to establish that Donald Trump earned a huge amount of income in 2005. Perhaps they knew that if a document showing Trump in a favorable light were leaked, he would rush to confirm its authenticity. Having released it himself to deny the hated media a chance to scoop him, there’s no plausible way to refute it now.

The crystal ball is murky, but one thing is absolutely certain: There are but a few reasons one person pays another vastly more than the actual value to buy a piece of property. None of those reasons involve things that are legal. Aaron Schock is about to go to prison for it. Duke Cunningham did go to prison for it. And Donald Trump received $100 million from a Russian organized crime figure for a property not worth 1/3 of that, which the buyer never even occupied and eventually had demolished. This came at a time when Trump was deeply in debt to a German bank that is under investigation for helping Russian criminals launder money using third parties.

Most people saw a big non-story on Tuesday evening. Maybe it’s actually a prosecutor building a case.

Will we need hazmat teams for the Easter egg roll on the WH lawn?

First of all, according to Lyin’ Spice, it’s the Easter Eggroll, in honor of President Xi’s trip. And I think it’s insulting to insinuate that a HazMat team needs to be around because of Xi’s presence.

And, of course, Shitgibbon asked Xi to bring the fortune cookies, thinking there might actually be some money in there, and he’s a little short this month. And I don’t mean his fingers or certain other body parts.

And as a follow-up, another reason Grassley was quiet? He might have been hoarse from screaming, earlier today, about DOJ stonewalling to a WaPo reporter (?!?!):

“Every time they come up here for their nomination hearing . . . I ask them: ‘Are you going to answer phone calls and our letters, and are you going to give us the documents we want?’ And every time we get a real positive ‘yes!’ And then they end up being liars!” Grassley said, screaming into the phone during an interview with The Washington Post. “It’s not if they’re treating us differently than another committee. It’s if they’re responding at all.”

50 days in, and Trump + his team already have a powerful GOP Senator so pissed off he’s going to the liberal media to vent.

    @debbie:

After receiving his JD from Harvard, Adam Schiff began working as a prosecutor in the Los Angeles branch of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. While an assistant U.S. Attorney, he gained attention by prosecuting a case against Richard Miller, a former FBI agent convicted of “passing secret documents to the Soviet Union in exchange for a promised $65,000 in gold and cash.” The first time Miller was tried, it resulted in a hung jury; the second time, it resulted in a conviction overturned on appeal, and the third time he was convicted.

Water, range and land management, pollution and emission standards, health care, sanctuary cities, education, renewable energy, that train that should have been built in the 50’s except California was stuck with a Brown and not a Randian hero who loved trains, drilling and fuel exploration on terra firma and off shore … the list goes on and on and on.

Can we have faith in Netherlands’ exit polls?

Heavy turnout, so results look pretty solid. The right wing guy did not win, but he made a strong showing, according to Reuters and others.

Rutte’s VVD Party was projected to win 31 of parliament’s 150 seats, down from 41 at the last vote in 2012, but ahead of Wilders who tied in second place with two other parties at 19 each, according to the polls by national broadcaster NOS based on interviews with voters.

At 81 percent, turnout was the highest in 30 years in an election that was a test of whether the Dutch wanted to end decades of liberalism and choose a nationalist, nativist path by voting for Wilders and his promise to “de-Islamicise” the Netherlands and quit the European Union.

In the city of Nijmegen, polling stations had to order extra ballot papers and extend opening times to give people enough time to vote.

The result was a relief to mainstream parties across Europe, particularly in France and Germany, where right-wing nationalists hope to make a big impact in elections this year, potentially posing an existential threat to the EU.

Trump’s budget sez we don’t need no environment protection or diplomacy because we’re gonna bomb the crap out of everybody, bigly and cleanly:

A budget proposal to be released by U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday includes deep cuts for the State Department and Environmental Protection Agency as his administration seeks to raise military spending, the New York Times said on Wednesday.

The budget plan for fiscal 2018 will call for cuts of 28 percent for the State Department and 31 percent for the Environmental Protection Agency, the Times reported, citing congressional staff members familiar with the plan.

It will also propose a big reduction in the State Department’s Food for Peace program and the elimination of a Transportation Department program that subsidizes flights to rural U.S. airports, the Times said.

Trump’s budget proposals include cuts in federal government agencies that have been targeted by Republican Party politicians for decades but historically protected by Congress which under law holds the federal purse strings.

His administration is seeking to boost military spending by $54 billion and seek cuts of the same size in non-defense programs. Early drafts described by government officials call for dramatic cuts at some agencies.

@debbie: @humboldtblue: @SiubhanDuinne: I’m glad everybody is enjoying it. Those kids must be amazed.

    @SiubhanDuinne:
    @Major Major Major Major:

I commented “They’re in SECOND GRADE! Just play along.”

Her response was on the order of “And is the teacher in second grade TOO?”

So far I have ignored this passive-aggressive comment. She is a fine soul, but I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone with a more impaired sense of humour.

@SiubhanDuinne: I mean, the kids obviously wrote the questions. Sheesh.

@humboldtblue: The girl in the blue-n-white dress and white hair is Elsa. The girl in the Teal/Black/dark Blue dress with brown hair is Anna.

Over at ginandtacos, there’s a column for Branding that asks what do Democrats stand for.

If Republicans are for small government and low taxes, what do we stand for?

    Healthy societies and ethnic plurality?
It isn’t catchy, but how would you phrase it? (Brevity is the soul of wit and branding.)

    @Roger Moore:

The fool needs to learn: if you’re short of money, you ask for a red envelope, not a fortune cookie.

First of all: he’s a fool, and he can’t/won’t learn.
Second: assuming the “red envelope” thing is an actual Chinese “custom” (I don’t know if it is, it’s just the sense I get from your comment), that would be the furthest from Shitgibbon’s mind [sic]. He would probably ask for “One from Column A, one from Column B,” and ask if Xi would like “flied lice” for dinner (“It’s a house specialty at Mar-a-Lago!”), and ask him how things are in Tokyo or Seoul. In other words, be the racist moron we know him to be.

@debbie: In case no one else has mentioned this, I checked Adam Schiff’s Wikipedia page and his wife’s name is Eve. Cool.
