Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

The willow is too close to the house.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.

From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.

Submit Your Photos

Good Morning All,

This weekday feature is for Balloon Juicers who are on the road, travelling, etc. and wish to share notes, links, pictures, stories, etc. from their escapades. As the US mainland begins the end of the Earth day as we measure it, many of us rise to read about our friends and their transient locales.

So, please, speak up and share some of your adventures, observations, and sights as you explore, no matter where you are. By concentrating travel updates here, it’s easier for all to keep up-to-date on the adventures of our fellow Commentariat. And it makes finding some travel tips or ideas from 6 months ago so much easier to find…

Have at ’em, and have a safe day of travels!

Should you have any pictures (tasteful, relevant, etc….) you can email them to [email protected] or just use this nifty link to start an email: Start an Email to send a Picture to Post on Balloon Juice

    Personal preference: delete the older duplicate, not the newer one.

    No road trip for me this week, although I’m mentoring/chaperoning/paying for my kid at the FIRST Robotics Competition at Rochester Institute of Technology. If you want to see some amazing robots designed and built by high school students, check out the live stream which should start around 8:30am EDT.

    If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, many local FRC competions will have finals and playoffs on Saturday. You can search for them off the FIRST Inspires website (first link – trying to avoid too many links and end up in moderation)

    @Central Planning: 5x the cost of the free one? Not sure I could afford that… No definitely outside of my budget.

    Not really pictures, but this video of an Amtrak train flying into a station with snow all over the tracks is funny, but apparently some people got hurt (which is not). Video of the train There’s a slow-mo link on that page too which looks amazing.

    @Central Planning:
    Saw that yesterday, hope nobody got hurt. What amazed me was that people are standing there, watching the train come in & it is throwing up a huge wake but they don’t get out of the way.

    Amboy Crater in the Mojave Trails national monument is among the southern California landscapes where heavy rains have brought a once-in-a-decade covering of wild flowers .

    Last full day at Disneyworld today. Breakfast with Mary Poppins, and then Animal Kingdom. A fun time is being had by all, but between my bad knee and the 11YO’s cold, we’re exhausted.

    @laura:
    Poco’s Chauffeur had a great day at Canyon de Chelly. She had to stick to the rim drives because of Poco. The canyon is greening up nicely. Looking down and seeing the little houses with their little fences is magical. The locals who actually summer in the canyon are in the process of moving back in those little houses. Mostly locals everywhere…very few tourists. Poco had his first and hopefully only spell of car sickness..it has heated up unexpectedly and it’s getting to him even with all the windows down when she has to leave him in the car for just a few minutes…plus his chauffeur only has February clothes. Low key day down by the San Juan River today.

    650 miles in the last two days with ZERO mechanical problems for the Tin Can. Looks like my thesis committee might just approve my MacGyver Ph.D.

    Had a great stop in Fredericksburg for dinner last night and heard some GREAT live music by Stephen K Morris (guitar, standup bass, and fiddle). Sadly, the CD I bought utterly fails to capture the energy of him live.

    @Mnemosyne: Hang in there! It’s exhausting at the best of times. My wife took my son a few years back and it wiped her out. A week later she found out she had pmeumonia during the trip.

    @frosty:

    That happened with my friend’s pre-teen son a few years ago — he was coughing a lot, but he swore he was fine to go to Disneyland and was fine all day. When they got home, he was diagnosed with walking pneumonia. She felt SO guilty, but he said he was fine. He’s a big Disney geek, so he didn’t mind.
