Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

T R E 4 5 O N

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

This blog will pay for itself.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Mid-Morning Open Thread – Mars Video and Parliament Shooting

This is just stunning:

A FICTIVE FLIGHT ABOVE REAL MARS from Jan Fröjdman on Vimeo.

More on the project here.

In other news, I just had fiber optics installed (1 GBps) yesterday – it’s a city owned project 6 years in the making. $50 a month (for life, supposedly). Comcast is running scared and dropping their prices, but still couldn’t get rid of them fast enough.

ETA: While I was typing this, looks like there was a shooting in London at the Parliament.

Democrats have to push hard on Trump breaking his promise not to touch Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Create a narrative and keep hammering. The Republicans realized years ago that a lot of people are stupid and need catch phrases to pay attention (Gingrich’s contract for America, make America great again – they are idiotic but they work). Tag Trump as a serial liar and keep repeating it.

@zhena gogolia: Depends on who the assailant was and their motive, if they had one. So far I haven’t heard anything about that, only that police shot him dead.

Guardian: What we know so far

There have been two serious incidents near the British parliament.
A police officer has been stabbed in the Houses of Parliament in central London, Commons Leader David Lidington has said.
The alleged assailant was shot by armed police following a “serious” incident.
There are further reports of a car driving into a number of people on Westminster Bridge, before driving into the railings of the Palace of Westminster.
According to reports as many as 12 people could have been involved. People are being treated at the scene.
Westminster is currently in lockdown with MPs told to remain in the main chamber or in their offices.
Scotland Yard said it was called to a firearms incident on Westminster Bridge amid reports of several people injured.
Transport for London said Westminster underground station has been shut at the police’s request.

Our Secretary Of State didn’t even want the job:

“I didn’t want this job. I didn’t seek this job.” He paused to let that sink in.

A beat or two passed before an aide piped up to ask him why he said yes.

“My wife told me I’m supposed to do this.”

After watching the contortions of my face as I tried to figure out what to say next, he humbly explained that he had never met the president before the election. As president-elect, Trump wanted to have a conversation with Tillerson “about the world” given what he gleaned from the complex global issues he dealt with as CEO of Exxon Mobil.

“When he asked me at the end of that conversation to be secretary of state, I was stunned.”

When Tillerson got home and told his wife, Renda St. Clair, she shook her finger in his face and said, “I told you God’s not through with you.”

With a half-worn smile, he said, “I was supposed to retire in March, this month. I was going to go to the ranch to be with my grandkids.”

Multiple sources claim that the former fashion model — who’s currently living 200 miles away from Washington, D.C., in NYC’s Trump Tower while Barron finishes the school year — refuses to share a bed with Donald even on the rare occasions when they sleep in the same city. “They have separate bedrooms,” says another Trump insider. “They never spend the night together — ever.” (A third source says the couple do sleep in the same room but keep separate beds: “It’s very ‘royal’ of them!”)

So trumpp is following through on his promise to create jobs

The week before the Women’s March on Jan. 21 in cities across the United States, protesters who were making signs helped fuel increased sales of poster boards by 33 percent and foam boards by 42 percent compared with the same week last year, the consumer research group NPD reported recently. Poster and foam board sales from Jan. 15 to 21 totaled $4.1 million.

Sales of the materials used to make the messages on the posters also increased that week: Specialty markers were up by 24 percent; permanent markers, 12 percent; glue, 27 percent; and scissors, 6 percent.
