Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

We still have time to mess this up!

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

There’s a Pizzagate rally going on right now in the nation’s capital.

Casey and Danielle travelled from Jacksonville for Pizzagate rally, say Wikileaks got them into it. Very into it: "This is all we do." pic.twitter.com/7YofPT9kyc

Yesterday was so important for many reasons.
    1. We kept healthcare for 24 million Americans
    2. They blew their shot on the one chance a year for Reconciliation
    3. Trumpcare was nothing but a tax cut plan masquerading as a healthcare plan. Now that that is gone, they must do their tax evil OUT IN THE OPEN.
    4. Yes, Price is a demon, but everything that he does to sabotage Obamacare is out in the open and we can highlight it.
    5. The ZEGK’s plan to dismantle the American Social Safety Net was dealt a blow. He’s gonna have to do it out in the open too.

Does anyone know how Pizzagate originated? I’m not saying that there’s anything to it, but what nugget of fact did they build this fantasy around? Like for Whitewater, there was a land deal and a proposed bank loan for Susan McDougal. How did someone get from ‘this pizza place is owned by a friend of Hillary Clinton and David Brock’ to ‘they’re molesting children in the basement’?

Well, you see, there was one time where this dragon on an island smoked pot. Pretty much all the time. And that’s not all bad, you understand. But the problem is that Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal dragon. Let’s call him “Puff”. And man, they would get high as fuck and frolic all over the place. On sailboats, in autumn mists, all kinds of crazy shit.
But then one day Jackie’s parents reported him missing. What they later found out was that Jackie Paper didn’t want to frolic with Puff any longer. But Puff was an international drug trafficker that also dabbled in child prostitution. And so when Jackie had told Puff he was through with all the frolicking in the land by the sea, Puff said, “Fuck that shit. You know too much.” And that magic dragon stashed Jackie Paper in his cave under a pizza parlor in NJ, called up his cartel buddies the Clintons and said, “Shipment ready. One with sausage for pickup asap.”
And that’s how we got PizzaGate.

Yeah, I realized after my post that it was really silly of me to be expecting a semi-rational chain of argument from the right these days. Maybe a few decades ago, they would feel compelled to come up with something that sounded potentially plausible, but not anymore.

You know, one thing that seriously irked me about the whole birth certificate nonsense is that nobody even bothered to try to find or invent any evidence that Ann Dunham ever went to Kenya! You know that she was probably the topic of a lot of gossip back then – the white teenager who married the African guy; if she’d gone to Kenya people would have talked about it! Someone from her college days would have surfaced and said, oh yeah, I remember when Ann went to Kenya. But… nothing.

I’ve been noticing in the past week that the news media seems to have decided that the current scandal is called “Trump-Russia”. Personally, I’m thrilled that they’re not tacking a -gate on the end of it. That indicates to me an acknowledgement that this is something big, a scandal that future scandals will be compared to. After all, nobody called Watergate “Watergate-Dome” – they knew that Teapot Dome was going to be completely eclipsed by this big new scandal.

It’s outrageous that Jones did this. And as to the guy who threatened its employees at gunpoint and these apparent idiotarians protesting on Capitol Hill (hard to know whether they are serious) anyone who henceforth tries to tell me that I am out of touch with the authentic real folk of the heartland is going to get smacked. Their view of urbanites is so overdetermined by outright lies that they think we are the kind of people who would collectively overlook child sex trafficking in a neighborhood pizza restaurant. We are such helicopter parents around here that we are more likely to harass a restaurant owner for getting his underage children to work the cash register.

I don’t know how much the plan to relax rules is related to this strike but of course the massive casualties draw attention to military campaign we’re involved in unbeknownst to most of the public.

Most troubling for Mr. Alefantis and staff has been the use of children’s images, pilfered from the restaurant’s social media pages and the personal accounts of friends who had “liked” Comet Ping Pong online. Those photos have been used across dozens of websites. Parents, who declined to talk publicly for fear of retribution, have hired lawyers to get the photos removed.

Musicians who have performed at Comet Ping Pong have been pulled in, too. Amanda Kleinman, whose band, Heavy Breathing, has performed there several times, deleted her Twitter account after the abusive comments became overwhelming. Similar comments have flooded her YouTube music clips.

“We are at a dangerous place in American culture where a good percentage of people aren’t distinguishing what is a real news source based on real reporting and fact-checking and only reinforcing pre-existing ideas they have,” Ms. Kleinman said.

The frustration has been compounded by the lack of recourse for Mr. Alefantis, his friends and employees. Yelp blocked the comments sections of Comet Ping Pong’s review page after reports of abusive comments and fake news in reviews. YouTube said it prohibits threats, harassment and hate speech and has tools for flagging violations and filing complaints for the site to take further action, but has largely not blocked comments on these videos. Twitter declined to comment, and Facebook did not have any further comment.

    (NYT, November)

ETA (NYT) After employees and Mr. Alefantis complained to Reddit about how Comet Ping Pong was being targeted on the site, the #pizzagate discussion thread posted a warning that revealing personal information about individuals was prohibited.

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. >> Voter turnout Tuesday was nearly double that in 2015 as two Democrats were elected to the Ballston Spa Board of Trustees while an incumbent Republican judge retained his seat.

Democrats Shawn Raymond and Noah Shaw defeated Republican incumbent Ronald Henry and GOP candidate Bruce Coutoure for two seats on the board. Michael Morrissey kept his village justice seat, staving off a challenge from Democrat Erika Tebbens.

Tuesday’s election marked the first time in several years that candidates from both parties ran for seats on village government and for village justice. For many years, incumbents had run unopposed.

Union Fire Co. and Eagle-Matt Lee Fire Co. served as polling places, with residents living north of Kaydeross Creek voting at Union and those living south of the creek placing their votes at Eagle-Matt Lee.

The polls opened at 11 a.m. and closed at 9 p.m. Throughout the day, a small but steady trickle of people parked along the roads near the firehouses and wandered into the firehouses to place their votes. By 6:45 p.m., Eagle -Matt Lee had collected 396 votes, with Union polling station having collected 225.

Approximately 5,000 people live in the village, with about 3,000 registered to vote. The last election cycle – in 2015 – saw all but one incumbent running unopposed and an overall voter turnout of 411.

On Tuesday, Raymond, Shaw and Morrissey each collected more votes than the total number of ballots cast two years ago.

When asked why they thought there was such improved turnout over recent years, Shaw attributed it to the increased level of engagement on the part of the voters. Raymond agreed, adding that he and his fellow candidates began their campaigns early and reached out to more people through house parties, meet and greets and knocking on doors. He also said he thought the use of social media had a big positive impact on the campaign.

Raymond also noted the village demographic has become more diverse in recent years, both politically and generationally, something that he believes may have added to the win by two of the three Democratic candidates.

Engineered to appeal to a set of particularly gullible and social-media devoted Americans with a very strong streak of homophobia and a tendency to conflate gay persons (Comet owner) with pedos, and educated people (Podestas) with gays. The job of the military is, among other things, to evaluate each and every operation to make sure it was effective and held civilian casualties to a minimum. I think the rank-and-file are probably doing this because it is standard operating procedure. If not, we are really becoming more like the Russians in Syrian which bombed densely populated areas with no attention to civilian casualties. I don’t want us to become like that. The fact that the current administration is trying to make it easier to use drones makes this whole episode noteworthy, at least for me.

Take a look at that picture. In particular, I call your attention to the ages of the 4 people in the foreground. That picture should break your heart, because it’s prima facia evidence of child abuse, and probably drug abuse, and it’s how this whole whirlygig keeps whirling. It doesn’t break your heart though, no, you’re tough. It just gets your dander up. At who? Who else, other liberals who are just too kind. Apparently all you see is the insufficiently outraged and overly kind and understanding liberals that are standing outside the frame but somehow always in your eyes. How you see them through the blood is the real mystery.
