Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Jon Ossoff is polling well ahead of the Republicans in the jungle primary in GA-6 and polls show him neck-and-neck in the general. This would be a big win for Dems and would scare the shit out of the Republicans in Congress. So make it rain.

In case anyone doubts that these efforts can bear fruit.

    * Democratic successes in state legislative special elections continued late last week, with an interesting win in Pennsylvania, where a Dem won a state House race as a write-in candidate.

So yes this was a heavily democratic district, but still write-ins rarely win.

I think I mentioned this in a thread yesterday, but I did a little mini-fundraiser for him on Facebook, promising I’d kick in another donation if 5 of my friends donated. I got to 5 in a few hours, and at least one of the friends posted the same thing on her wall. It’s worth a try for anyone active on social media – you could do the same thing on Twitter without too much trouble.

Early voting for district 6 started today. The normal site for Roswell early voting is not being used, and instead you have to drive through a ways through heavy traffic to early vote at the east Roswell library. There is also a city council runoff on the 18th. Early voting is April 10th and at that time the Roswell library will be used for early voting in that race, as well as the east Roswell library. If you want to early vote for both elections, you have to do at the east Roswell library after the tenth. Confusing huh! It’s coincidental that Karen Handel has strong support on that side of Roswell.

Grassley Requests Info From Political Firm Behind Trump-Russia Dossier

By Esme Cribb Published March 27, 2017, 12:44 PM EDT

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on Monday requested information from the political opposition research firm behind an explosive document containing allegations of ties between President Donald Trump and Russia.

Grassley sent a letter dated Friday to Fusion GPS requesting that the firm answer questions about who hired the company “to conduct opposition research relating to Mr. Trump and his associates,” when its investigation took place and what relationship the firm had with the FBI, which reportedly paid the firm’s investigator.

The document, which BuzzFeed published in January, remains largely unsubstantiated, though in February CNN reported that multiple unnamed sources within the U.S. intelligence community had corroborated certain communications detailed in it.

“When political opposition research becomes the basis for law enforcement or intelligence efforts, it raises substantial questions about the independence of law enforcement and intelligence from politics,” Grassley wrote. “The Committee requires additional information to evaluate this situation.”

He requested that the company reply in two weeks, by April 7.

OT, and from Fuck the Fucking New York Times, but wow — this could be splendid viewing:

Barry Jenkins, the writer and director of “Moonlight,” named best picture at last month’s Academy Awards, is teaming again with that film’s producers for a new television series for Amazon.

“The Underground Railroad” will be an adaptation of the acclaimed Colson Whitehead novel of the same title, winner of the 2016 National Book Award for fiction. As with “Moonlight,” adapted from an original script by the playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, Mr. Jenkins will write and direct the limited series, which will be executive produced by Pastel, a company co-founded by Mr. Jenkins, and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.

The project has been in the works for months but Amazon announced on Monday that it had signed on to develop the series.

… It is unclear when “The Underground Railroad” would debut on Amazon or how many episodes it would include. The series has not officially been given the green light, though the high-profile nature of the title and figures involved make that seem likely. If it is approved, the show would skip Amazon’s usual pilot process and go straight to series.

I would love to see what Barry Jenkins does with this.

Even though I live in another district, I signed up yesterday to do poll-watching in the 6th (I did it first in 2014 during Michelle Nunn’s campaign for Senate, and again in 2016 throughout early voting and on Election Day). They will be calling/emailing me soon with locations and dates for this special election.

Don’t know what it’s like in other areas, but in the slice of the district that’s closest to where I live, there are Ossoff signs everywhere! So rare to see signs up for any Democrat, so I feel (guardedly) optimistic.

    March 27, 2017 at 1:28 pm

@hovercraft: I believe that the company can tell Grassley to pound sand.

It’s documented how the report was released: the principal investigator gave copies to both the FBI and MI6 last fall; when the FBI instead kept leaking Hillary e-mails, he hand-walked the document into John McCain’s office, who himself hand-walked it into Comey’s. Somewhere in that timeframe, it was leaked to Buzzfeed as well. Buzzfeed is being sued for defamation over one of the allegations in the piece, and they’re the only ones who might have a clue as to who gave it to them (if it just didn’t come in the mail).

Unless there’s a crime (and hence, a supoena) involved, Fusion GPS has no reason to waste their time talking to Congress. It’s certainly none of Grassley’s business who paid for it.

    Edited to fix spelling.

@SiubhanDuinne: Not trying to be a debbie downer but as someone who has been a campaign manager in a previous life remember that “signs don’t vote.” If there are folks posting here that live close enough and are healthy enough to help out on the ground, I implore you to contact the campaign and go knock a few doors or help out in the offices next weekend. At this point, with the success they’ve had with fundraising, they need bodies on the ground more than anything else. In particular, they’d probably also appreciate folks who could work on election day to make calls to and visit the doors of the folks who they’ve IDed as supporters. In a special election like this every single vote will matter.

@JPL: They’ve been trying to get Handel, as the sole female GOP’er with any sort of statewide name recognition, into a state wide office since the mid 2000’s. She struck out each and every time and did herself no favors with the Planned Parenthood break with the Susan G. Komen foundation a few years back. However, I wouldn’t discount her this time. And, yes, the GOP’ers are going to erect every barrier to voting that they can get away with. The traffic is awful and people have to be very committed to go out of their way to vote. Let’s hope that Ossof can energize prospective voters.

    @MomSense:
I assume part of the problem is that the buttons behave differently depending on whether any text is highlighted when you click them. If you highlight some text and then push one of the buttons, it encloses the highlighted text in a pair of tags. If you don’t have any text highlighted when you push the button, it only creates the opening tag; you have to push the button a second time to create the closing tag.

My point is that it’s an easy mistake to make, because the procedure is inconsistent. If you highlight some text and then click the button, you don’t have to click a second time to close the tag. If you don’t highlight text- if you just have the cursor sitting there- then you have to click once to open and a second time to close.

I’d love it if Ossoff took Price’s seat. I’m hoping the ACHA debacle opened up some eyes on what the GOP really intends to do to their healthcare access. payback can be a bitch. I really want to see Handel handed her ass again too. She may have some cachet with radical forced-birthers, but even women who are squishy about abortion rights do not want people screwing with early screening access. Handel really pissed off a lot of survivors and their family members and supporters of Komen when she tried fucking with their Planned Parenthood funding. And Planned Parenthood is still more popular than Twittler and Ryan.
