Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

T R E 4 5 O N

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

I’m exhausted. Flight was uneventful. JetBlue is solid.

Dogs are thrilled I am back, or at least putting on a good show.

Jet Blue is my favorite airline for domestic travel. My only issue with them is that they don’t go everywhere I want to go. In LA they land in Long Beach, and I sorely need them to land in Ontario.

    STOP WRITING THESE ARTICLES!!!

I don’t give a phuck about these people.

Write an article about someone not stupid enough to vote for DOLT45, who sees the harm that they suspected ACTUALLY COMING TO THEIR LIVES.

THAT is the article I want to read.

There will be plenty of those articles if they manage to pass healthcare. In the meantime, I for one am fine with public shaming. It’s the only way to get some people to realize they were wrong.

My FB feed is full of articles about Trumpsters beginning to regret their decision. I wonder if this is due to some sort of algorithm seeing how much anti-Trump stuff I share or like.

@efgoldman: I thought he could have beat Trump in the Electoral College had the Democrats had the sense to run him. Instead they decided to preach to the choir. Unfair to her as it may be, Hillary Clinton absolutely infuriates a lot of voters, especially female voters. Around here, at least, men weren’t nearly as opposed to her. (One guy cracked me up; he said, “She reminds everybody of their ex-wife, but I’ll probably vote for her because my ex gets things done pretty efficiently.” Chortle.)

I live in what is generally considered deep Trump country and right up till Election Day most of the people around me were still struggling to decide which was the lesser evil. We’re “Trump country” only in the sense that we’re “Absolutely no Clintons!” country. Whereas people didn’t hate Sanders (most had known nothing about him).

Well, we’ll see how President Pence does when the time comes.

I chose enlist because I though being a citizen sometimes requires commitment and means you have to sometime suck it up and do things that are not exactly what you’d like to be doing and is not maybe the most heroic step. But not voting? What the fuck? How hard is that, you go, you stand in line for a few minutes (or hours – thanks Ken Blackwell) you make a choice and you are done. That’s how you get to complain about how shitty the government is, you fucking participated.

Apricot Asswipe is going to need a lot more lawyers:

Three people who claim they were attacked or subjected to racial slurs at a Donald Trump rally in Kentucky are suing the candidate and his campaign, alleging he encourages an atmosphere of violence.
The suit was filed Thursday on behalf of three protesters seen being pushed by angry crowd members at a March 1 Louisville rally.

    Also too:

A federal judge in Louisville said in a ruling that then-candidate Donald Trump incited the use of violence against three protesters when he told supporters at a campaign rally a year ago to “get ’em out of here.”
    U. S. District Judge David J. Hale of the Western District of Kentucky also wrote in an opinion and order released Friday that because violence had broken out at a prior Trump rally and that known hate group members were in the Louisville crowd, Trump’s ordering the removal of an African-American woman was “particularly reckless.”

    @Pogonip:

I have not voted for a presidential candidate in 20 years. It’s like deciding who should be the captain of the Titanic.

The captain of the Titanic made mistakes and caused the wreck. A less stubborn and more sensible captain wouldn’t have sunk the ship and killed thousands of people.

As for voting, the Rush truism says, “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.”

The society has broken apart and that’s that.

The way to fix it is via politics. That means doing your part and making the better choice.

I know what it’s like to think that the major party candidates aren’t good enough to vote for. My first vote was for John Anderson in 1980. It took me far too long, until 2004, to recognize that voting 3rd Party was a cop-out. I could rationalize it (“X is going to win my state anyway”), but it was a was still a cop-out. I wasn’t willing to commit to actually taking a stand in a way that would affect the outcome in a positive way. Yeah, I could say “John Anderson’s plan of instituting a $0.50/gal federal gas tax (over N years) makes a lot of sense, and here’s why…” but someone who isn’t a powerful member of one of the parties isn’t going to get anything done. It was a fantasy.

Everyone has to make up their own mind about what’s important. But saying that society is broken and it doesn’t matter who is president (“and that’s that”) is lying to yourself. Your choice, and your advocacy on-line, matters. Memes that aren’t continuously reinforced die.

    My $0.02.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Bullshit. Trump called Iowa stupid after Cruz won the primary. Guess who Iowans voted for?

Indeed it is (BS). The average Trump voters made their decision as to who they liked using their “gut” (probably the section nearest the rectum) and then fit everything else in to match. Er, bad imagery there. Enh, what the hell, I’ll leave it in. :-)

In other words, these voters do hate it when someone “looks down on them”, calls them names like stupid, etc., but as soon as it’s done by someone they pre-decided to like, they say “see, we were stupid, but now we’ve wised up and voted Trump!”

Unlike Trump, though, at least some of them really will see that they were wrong.

In Trump’s head, Trump is never wrong. If you somehow detached his head and put it in a tank like on Futurama, Trump would believe that being a head in a tank is the best thing ever.

Twitler has lied to them, insulted them and yet they still stand with him. Almost every night for years he’d met up with a big group of musician friends at each other’s live concerts. The music was great. They talked about their real lives and checked up on each other, had memorials when someone died, were like minded on politics and community. The other day he told me the group has entirely collapsed, which is kind of unbelievable to me because they seemed pretty close for so long. He says the arguments during the primaries and then bad feelings after the election got too much and the group broke apart.

On Friday, the Late Show host sat down with Sarandon for a surprisingly contentious interview that saw the funnyman grill the actress on the aforementioned Trump statement.

“You said, ‘Some people feel that Trump might bring about the revolution immediately.’ A) How’s that going? What’s your assessment of how ‘the revolution’ is going?” asked Colbert.

“Well, I’m so happy that you asked—not really, but OK we’ll get into it,” replied a visibly uncomfortable Sarandon. “Well, have you seen this many town hall meetings of people from all parties storming and knocking on the doors of their representatives and complaining and screaming and yelling?”

    “Not since 2010,” Colbert responded.

    @SiubhanDuinne:
I’m sort of in the middle here. Like you I’ve had some good discussions with Pogonip. But like ef and Mike J it really isn’t that hard to vote. To not vote and then complain about political things is the height of hubris. We are in the fight of our lives as citizens because of not voting or purity voting. That people on this political blog would be upset at a comment like I haven’t voted in over 20 yrs is not surprising at all. I walked to the store and have been thinking of this since my last comment, which was intended to show that some people invested a lot in being citizens, a lot I know have invested a whole lot more than me. Some of them comment on this blog.
But someone who hasn’t voted in over 20 yrs has helped us get where we are. As Adam has stated, we are in a constitutional crisis and we need all hands on deck, not sitting around pissing and moaning. Now if that person was unable to get to a voting place or is a convicted felon and can’t vote in their state, or doesn’t have/can’t get a birth cert and lives in one of those voter ID states, I’ll give them a break. But those seem like very remote possibilities in this case and could have been easily explained.

I remember thinking it wasn’t that important to vote when I was very young because they all seemed to be the same. I voted anyway, choosing the party who best represented my point of view. When you develop some maturity and start understanding what the issues are and what’s at stake, you realize you must make choices. The more mature point of view is to recognize that no candidate is perfect, no one has all the answers and then, when you are really a grownup, you understand that it isn’t what is most important for you, it is what will be best to better the lives of the most people. Unless, of course, you are a fucking conservative who thinks that what is best for you is what is needed and fuck everyone else.

@Olivia: People who are eligible to vote and choose not to deserve only contempt. I find them more contemptible than even Trump voters.

Trump is partly YOUR fault, you have no business hanging out here to laugh at him.

Burnsie is having a heart attack somewhere, reading your comment.

Burnside knows, or should know after all these years, that I very well know the difference between UNC-CH and Dook, that I have worked with both of them for many many years, and that I was being snarky and sarcastic and would have used the special font except that it upsets people.

What the heck was a non voter doing around here anyway? I am not sure o believe it. Maybe they have been reconsidering but felt they had too much pride invested in not voting? Like someone boasted a lot when young and now doesn’t know how to admit they are regretting? Otherwise why were they ever here hanging out? It’s the main thing we ever discuss.
I wonder if any of the republican tribe are in that position.

@Iowa Old Lady: You’re absolutely right. I have no idea why so many people feel the need to be polite to them. They treat us with disdain and contempt. They dismiss rational thought and expertise. They have embraced the party of hatred and intolerance and have not earned any forgiveness for what they have done.

I think it’s a variant of the standard Conservative notion that rich people only respond to the carrot and poor people only to the stick. WWC voters are good people who need to be convinced to give up their ideas with sweet reason, while poor women and people of color need to be threatened with the negative consequences of failing to go along.

@Alternative Fax, a hip hop artist from Idaho: Thank you.

We had around 10 years with her, and we thought we lost her several times during that time (when she jumped out of my moving car to chase a squirrel on the way back from puppy training class; when she ate half a loaf of raisin bread; when she was sick and had elevated liver numbers and a nearly inoperable spot on her liver in an ultrasound – she healed on her own). She was a unique, goofy, and very sweet girl, one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

Condolences to you on the loss of Layla. It’s never easy to lose a loved pet. Remember the good times.

    Thanks again.

    Good night, all.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Balloon Juice mostly exemplifies inclusion. I’d hate to think that this site was turning into one of those purity places, like so many other sites.

At times, I think we do tend to get very passionate and of course, with Trump and the Republicans in charge, and very little tools to fight them I can see where that problem would be even worse now. It would be good to have people challenge each other to make sure we don’t turn into a purity site. After all, one of the things that makes Balloon Juice so awesome is well.. us! :-)

@SiubhanDuinne Soul sister, there really is a quote in Gaudy Night to cover every occasion, isn’t there? I’m still dining out on variations of Lord Peter’s contention that “the first thing a good principle does is kill somebody.”
