Nunes Steps Down – Temporarily

Via CNN:

House intelligence chairman Devin Nunes announced Thursday he was temporarily stepping aside from leading the investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 elections.

Nunes cited a series of ethics complaints filed against him alleging that he violated terms of discussing classified material following his clandestine meeting at the White House just over two weeks ago.
“I believe it is in the best interests of the House Intelligence Committee and the Congress for me to have Representative Mike Conaway, with assistance from Representatives Trey Gowdy and Tom Rooney, temporarily take charge of the Committee’s Russia investigation while the House Ethics Committee looks into this matter,” Nunes, a California Republican, said in a statement.

Slate (I think it was Slate) ran an interview with someone talking about how bad things are in Great Britain right now, as compared with what’s going on here, and I was somewhat comforted by the interviewee’s comments on the American political system’s ability to block things from going forward. I think Nunes being pressured to step aside is part of that system.

So, uh, good on us for not being totally out of our racist, nationalist minds?

Rep. Mike Conaway (R-TX) this week tried to downplay alleged attempts by Russian actors to influence the 2016 presidential election by comparing the cyber attacks to a performance by a Mexican entertainer at a Hillary Clinton campaign event.

“Harry Reid and the Democrats brought in Mexican soap opera stars, singers and entertainers who had immense influence in those communities into Las Vegas, to entertain, get out the vote and so forth,” he told The Dallas Morning News in an interview published Thursday. “Those are foreign actors, foreign people, influencing the vote in Nevada. Top White House political strategist Steve Bannon may no longer be on the National Security Council, but he’s not backing down from his fights with his rivals in the Trump administration.

Axios’ Jonathan Swan reports that Bannon has been telling associates that he loves “a gun fight” and that he will continue fighting what he sees as the “globalist” wing of the White House, which includes Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.

According to Swan’s sources, the Kushner faction believes that Bannon and his allies are “clinically nuts,” while Bannon’s team believes Kushner is trying to transform Trump into a moderate Republican “squish.”

Most interestingly, one of Bannon’s allies hints that Kushner will be the target of upcoming leaks that will damage his public reputation.

“Steve has developed strong and important relationships with some of the most powerful right leaning business leaders,” the Bannon ally told Swan. “I see some bad press in [Jared’s] future.”

Breitbartt, the pro-Trump propaganda outlet previously run by White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon, is now being deployed against President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and top White House staffer Jared Kushner as part of an internal power struggle.

Over the past week — as Kushner and Bannon have reportedly feuded — the website has published articles highlighting Kushner’s meetings with the Russian ambassador, questioning the ethics of his business dealings, criticizing his “thin resume in diplomacy,” and speculating about whether he is leaking negative stories about Bannon.

Those attacks represent a U-turn in the website’s coverage of the president’s family. Following Trump’s election and in the early days of his administration, Breitbart provided Kushner and his wife, Ivanka, with soft-focus celebrity coverage. The website chronicled their search for a home and synagogue in Washington, D.C., and lashed out at their critics.

@amk: I’m not excited about his recusal because of who will replace him. I’m excited because he was forced into recusing (and hopefully later resigning, as the investigations move along) essentially by the weight of public opinion and protest.

    @hueyplong:

Kind of hoping “temporarily” means “until he resigns in disgrace.”

That really would be the best of all possible worlds.

ETA: Weird. The quote, link, bold options disappeared briefly.

@different-church-lady: Hey if you want to be all soon and gloom for no reason don’t do that here. Why even bother, we’ll just lose anyway. In fact, we might as well just kill ourselves now since we might die tomorrow. Why bother?

@Goku: There is also no electoral college to hand the office to the second-place vote getter.

Well, if Nunes resigns, I’m sure there’s room in the White House for a bright guy like him. Maybe the NSC….

So Bannon and Nunes? neutralizing a couple of Twittler’s insiders in exchange for nuking the filibuster? So Donnie has demonstrated he will screw his contractors staff once again rather than be outed as the loser who couldn’t close the deal on his SCOTUS nominee. ZEGS probably got the Freedum Caucus and moderates to come to some common ground on starving grannies too. tRump is rube.

There was “no chance” Senior could win either, if you recall.

He didn’t do particularly well in NY
