On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
This weekday feature is for Balloon Juicers who are on the road, travelling, etc. and wish to share notes, links, pictures, stories, etc. from their escapades. As the US mainland begins the end of the Earth day as we measure it, many of us rise to read about our friends and their transient locales.
So, please, speak up and share some of your adventures, observations, and sights as you explore, no matter where you are. By concentrating travel updates here, it’s easier for all to keep up-to-date on the adventures of our fellow Commentariat. And it makes finding some travel tips or ideas from 6 months ago so much easier to find…
Have at ’em, and have a safe day of travels!
Should you have any pictures (tasteful, relevant, etc….) you can email them to [email protected] or just use this nifty link to start an email: Start an Email to send a Picture to Post on Balloon Juice
Pics, after the jump
A short set from otmar to start out the week:
Where it was taken: Prague
When: last Sunday
Other notes or info about the picture: Last year’s Christmas gift to my wife was a weekend trip to Prague. The train from Vienna takes about 4 hours, so we spent almost two full days sightseeing. This set of pictures is from Sunday noon, where we toured the Jewish quarter of the old town.
1: Cemetery
2: Klaus Synagogue
3: Oldnew Synagogue
4: Spanish Synagogue
And I likely messed up the pictures vs descriptions. Except for the first one; I’m somewhat confident that it is, indeed, a cemetery.
Thanks otmar, I know many of us look forward to your next set.
Much more tomorrow – have a great Monday, and for those observing Passover on Tuesday, Chag Sameach!

Nice shots!

Heya jackals. I wrote a little blog post with some photos I took from my first 24 hours in Bangkok.
OzarkHillbilly
I have never been inside a synagogue. All of a sudden I want to. Thanx otmar.

@OzarkHillbilly: aren’t these beautiful? I used to live just down the street from a pretty one in San Francisco.
OzarkHillbilly
@Major Major Major Major: My world traveling niece (became a stewardess, smart girl she is) loves Thailand. She and her husband have been there a half dozen times or so.
raven
@Major Major Major Major: My friends just spent three weeks there!

Beautiful!

@OzarkHillbilly: @raven: it’s really cool! Didn’t one of you show me a picture of the wonderful cable infrastructure they have in Vietnam? I took the top picture here as a result for comparison https://imgur.com/a/NW7Ai

@Major Major Major Major: Nice pics. We were in Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar in December. If you want to splurge on a fancy meal in Bangkok, I highly recommend Nahm.
I also highly recommend a visit to Myanmar for anyone who is going to SE Asia. It is a fantastic place — really nice people, great food, amazing sites, not too expensive.

@Major Major Major Major: OK, pics; so you are there.
rikyrah
Pictures are beautiful. I have always wanted to go visit Prague.
OzarkHillbilly
@Major Major Major Major: Was not I, tho I do/did have similar pics from Mexico. Vietnam is on my list.(and Cambodia) Here’s hoping I have a better time than Raven did.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@OzarkHillbilly: I’ve been thinking of seeing the Wilshire Temple here in LA, though I think you have to call and make reservations or something and I’m an introvert.

@evap:
We’re splurging at Gaggan tonight, excited! That’s it for our splurge budget. ?
raven
@OzarkHillbilly: It had some high points.

otmar, great pictures, thank you! Do you live in Vienna, or were you coming from somewhere else?
@OzarkHillbilly: @Major Major Major Major: I was in Thailand in 2014, though mostly on Koh Samui and only one night in Bangkok. Going to Chang Mai next November. I really liked Thailand too. Enjoy, MMMM!

@Major Major Major Major: Enjoy!
Otmar, The pictures of the Synagogues are amazing. If you have more information about the cemetery, I hope that you’ll share with us.

@OzarkHillbilly:
The older ones really are beautiful and awe-inspiring. My family attended a modern synagogue built in the 1950s. Not even the stained windows were very impressive.
ETA: And yes, lovely pictures. Thanks for sharing.
Elizabelle
@Major Major Major Major: Bangkok. Exciting. Enjoy.
Good morning, jackals. In Madeira. Gorgeous. Will try to get you some snaps. Loving my trip, but miss my buds here.
And fuck Mitch McConnell.
We should let Canadians vote in US elections. They are laughing at Trump even more than we are. And they bring him up.

@Elizabelle: ooh, can’t wait to see.
this is the tasting menu at the restaurant. I’m in over my head.
Baud
@Elizabelle: How is Spain?
@Major Major Major Major:
Now I really have to go to Thailand.
Elizabelle
@Baud: Hello bud. Arrive BCN on Good Friday. Think we get a stop at Malaga on Weds. I ❤️ the life aquatic, although this cruise ship was designed by a landlubber. Insane. Gonna see if this is the NCL ship that got slagged by the fuck the fucking NYTimes. They have privatized all the good space!
Although. Lots of Canadians. So it is sane company.
Elizabelle
Ok. Off to roam. Mostly uphill. Will try to check back before we sail off. Have to be back on the floating apartment building in four hours. And this place so gorgeous. Sad!
Besos.
otmar
@satby: I grew up in Salzburg and moved to Vienna 20 years ago.

That was me. Yeah, the Thai one looks similar.

@Major Major Major Major: #2.
Loved your pix and blog post, Baud. Bangkok is such a huge and sprawling city. I found it easier to use a water taxi on the river when I could. If you like museums, the Royal Barge Museum is interesting. Also, the pic of your bag reminded me that sting ray leather goods are unique and durable. Look forward to following the rest of your trip. Have a wonderful time.

@pamelabrown53: I’m not in Thailand with M^4, although I wish I were.

@Major Major Major Major:
Very nice. I like the noir picture of the street where you’re staying.

@Elizabelle: #19.
You are so lucky; Madeira is gorgeous. Are the jacaranda trees in bloom? So many flowers.
OzarkHillbilly
@raven: Ha!
Quinerly
Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing.
Elizabelle
@pamelabrown53: on a bus w wifi.
Yes. Jacaranda is lovely. Papayas, bananas, lizards. Love it here.
Baud
@Elizabelle: Which NCL ship are you on? I’ve probably used them more than any other for cruising.
pamelabrown53
@Baud:
Oops! I knew that. Sorry both to you and M^4.
chris
@Elizabelle: M4’s imgur link led me to this. Trudeau’s cabinet. Sanity is still a requirement.
Elizabelle
@Baud: Tis the Epic.

@otmar:
Thanks for the pictures, and especially for the wiki links for each place, that’s very thoughtful!
It is so great to have people reporting with pictures from all over the world!!!
We’re going to Tuscany next month /
to seek asylum
/, and will report from there. Excited, except for the connection from local air travel to international flight in ATL. Not happy about ATL at all~!!!
