Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

People are complicated. Love is not.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

I really should read my own blog.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

Republicans in disarray!

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

It's like Trump insulted an old gypsy woman who cursed him to live out his tweets. https://t.co/vWgy6gzkld

— (((tedfrank))) (@tedfrank) April 9, 2017

One reliable constant stands out over these tumultuous weeks: for every Trump policy, there is an old Trump tweet calling it dumb pic.twitter.com/pwen0VeGo4

— Sulome Anderson (@SulomeAnderson) April 8, 2017

Trump has tweeted over 350 times as president.
Of his 10 most-engaged followers, 5 are confirmed robots. @polly https://t.co/UdV9WVnyO2

— Jennifer Jacobs (@JenniferJJacobs) April 10, 2017

… Trump’s 10 most-engaged Twitter followers over the past 30 days include five confirmed robots and three accounts that appear to be bots, according to audience data collected by Social Rank. Trump’s most prolific respondent, @Trump2016_Fan, has posted more than 18,000 times in the past year, mostly all-caps messages of support for the 45th president. The account appears to be automated and did not respond to a request for an interview.

But there are plenty of humans in the 20,000 or so replies generated by a typical Trump tweet. These are piled like building blocks beneath each tweet, a tower of typos, insults, and encouragement that stretches on and on. Scrolling through the replies to a single Trump message is enough to test the fortitude of any reader; getting to the last reply is the sort of task it’s hard to imagine any human doing voluntarily. Yet the replies bundled nearest to @realDonaldTrump—in a sorting determined by Twitter’s mysterious algorithm—are likely to be seen by hundreds of thousands of users. If Trump is the most powerful and visible user of Twitter, the replies appearing closest to his messages must occupy some of the most influential real estate on the internet.

… According to beta content-analysis software used by Social Rank, 19 percent of Trump’s followers are women. Among Trump’s 20 most-engaged followers, only two had traditionally female names—and both of those accounts appear to be automated…

I had never encountered this Paul Kane character before tonight. (@pkcapitol) Apparently a WaPo congressional reporter. He dismisses KS-04 as a ‘rural’ district that doesn’t matter. Only GA matters, he says.

He’s fucking idiot. Wichita is a metro area of almost 640,000 people. Wichita’s MSA is larger than Des Moines MSA. Would a reporter dare call a House seat centered on Des Moines rural? Maybe, if he’s an east coaster who sees all of middle America as flyover country.

FFS, these are the idiots in our press who were totally gobsmacked by Trump’s win. Because they have no fvking idea what anything outside the coasts and the tony cocktail parties and big DNC quants or RNC pooh-bahs are like.

And with that short rant, I bid you all a good night!

@efgoldman: many years ago in Puerto Vallarta my parents rented a little catamaran to troll around with and do some whale watching. They had a couple lines off the stern on the way back in and we hooked a mahi-mahi. The gaff was broken, so they had one of us hold a beach towel while they flung it into the boat. My mom the towel holder caught it and swaddled it to the ground and they beat it to death with a truncheon. Quite bloody, and my mom still has a scar on her arm from the dorsal fin.

Then we went straight into a beachfront bar and they cooked the whole thing up for us in three different preparations. It was a ‘pregnant’ lady fish so we got fried roe too. To this day the best fish I ever ate.

@efgoldman: Dodgers games are known for that, I think it’s mainly because their stupid parking lot is a mess to get out of. Angels’ parking lot is a breeze by comparison but some people do leave early. Lots of people go who aren’t actually baseball fans.
We had friends we bought season tickets with (shared venture with them and another couple) who always left in the 7th because they lived in Riverside. So did we, but we learned early to stay until the bitter end because late in the game was when it was going to happen in 1979; that was the first year they went to a playoff game and we got to see them play the one they won.

I think the biggest reason this United thing is blowing up so huge is the sheer volume of people who have horror stories with that airline.

Kevin Drum has a post up about the four big US carriers and passenger bumping. It doesn’t sound like United is the worst. The problem is the law, though individual airline policies can make things better or worse. Legally, the guy yesterday was totally in the wrong, but United should never have allowed it to come to violent removal. A better incentives program is needed.

Any incentive would be better than “To compensate you for screwing you over, here’s a coupon for the opportunity for us to screw you over again. P.S. — there are multiple limitations on when/where you can use said coupon, and most of our customer service agents are highly confused by them.” Hell, I’d take a $300 SkyMall voucher over that.

    VOR

    April 12, 2017 at 11:27 am

@wuzzat: The problem is the flights are ALL so full they can’t offer acceptable alternatives. In this case, the re-booking offer was for a flight at 3pm the next day! If it was a matter of a couple hour delay then people would take the offers.

And who trusts the airlines these days? They are offering a voucher with a lot of conditions – who knows if it will even be usable?
