Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

No one could have predicted…

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

This really is a full service blog.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

So, the exact date that America as leader of the free world ended was when Trump won the GOP nomination.

Now it is just left to wondering how far we sink.

Just a reminder to those few who may not know. Trump is bald face lying when he says he opposed the Iraq war, at least before the invasion. The miserable fraud started opposing the Iraq misadventure about a year in when the disaster of the occupation lost popularity.

But, maybe we should give him a break. When he was asked about the proposed Iraq invasion during the run-up, he allowed that he hadn’t given it much thought.

Fix’d. And, you gotta admit, that was probably the most successful of all the cons Donnie pulled during his campaign. He actually convinced people that Hillary was more likely than he was to start bombing people.

In case anyone cares, I just got back from Jeff Flake’s town hall and he was not receiving the tender love and support from his constituents he might have been expecting. Almost 1700 people refusing to accept milquetoast answers or his steadfast need to refuse to engage on Planned Parenthood beyond “I disagree with you.” This was in the heart of Mesa, AZ mind you, not exactly a hotbed of liberalism. Whether it leads to anything or not I don’t know, but it was good to see the tribe engaged and activated.

Jeff Flake had a town hall tonight

    McKay Coppins‏Verified account @mckaycoppins 3h3 hours ago
Crowd chanting “HEALTH CARE FOR ALL” and then “NO STUPID WALL” ahead of Flake town hall.
I’d estimate this crowd is 70-80% hostile to Flake. He can barely get a word out without audience drowning him out with boos and heckles.
Flake says what happened to Garland was “not w/out precedent.” Man near front yells, “Bullshit!” Crowd chants “SHAME ON YOU!”
Flake asked about gun laws give 8yo boy who was just killed. “I’m a father, I can’t imagine…” People start yelling “ANSWER THE QUESTION!”

@GregB: Just talking to my traditional Republican brother (socially liberal as long as it costs nothing and fiscally conservative) who didn’t vote for either Hillary or Trump. He didn’t like Hillary because she was a warmonger. I was like gimme a break, he has ties to the Russian mob and Russian oligarchs, long ties to what is left of the Mafia, he has been a con man his whole life with multiple bankruptcies and he was best friends with Jeff Sessions. How could this turn out well? He admitted it wouldn’t, at which point I lost it. None of this was secret. You knew what he was. Elections in the US are binary. If you don’t vote for one side you are casting half a vote for the other. He kind of sheepishly acknowledged my point, but it is too phucking late.

I’m debating a one-day train trip for myself as a bit of a writer’s retreat — LA to San Luis Obispo, which is about 4-1/2 hours each way.

Earlier today, Amtrak seemed to indicate that I could get a layover in SLO of about 2-1/2 hours before catching the train back to LA, but now that option isn’t showing on the website anymore, and everything that leaves later than 2 pm is a 2-hour bus ride to catch the train in Santa Barbara. Feh.

Another amazing thing about Trump — he never stops selling stuff — ever. In the midst of describing his discussions with Premier Xi and dropping the MOAB bomb, he had to describe how great the chocolate cake is at Mar a Lago. The comments I have heard/read about it thought he was purposelessly mixing in trivia while discussing important matters. But to Trump the sales talk never stops, he can’t help it, he is going to make a profit from this presidency if it kills us all.

He has no control over what he’s saying – none. He really is a toddler. No filter, no mindfulness, no self-awareness, no sense of the appropriate or inappropriate.
If and when he has to speak about body bags coming back from wherever he’s sent troops to fight and die, he better have a fixed script that someone has written for him. Left to his own devices, he’ll be flailing worse than we have ever seen.

    @Uncle Cosmo:
Harriet Tubman breaks out of Underground’s time and format in a singular episode
    By Danette Chavez @bonmotvivant
    Apr 12, 2017 8:36 PM

Underground has never been afraid to gamble—its premise is based on a perilous proposition, after all. And it must have been something of a tough sell for co-creators Misha Green and Joe Pokaski: A TV series about slavery in America—depicting its victims and perpetrators—necessitated even more nuance than a film, as it would unfold over dozens of hours (ideally). The show couldn’t be quite grueling, but neither could it do what so many other harmful projects have done and gloss over the atrocities or center the story around white people.

But it’s a gamble that’s paid off, as this drama has not only taken Manhattan’s place as the show that could put WGN America on the map—as a place for content, no disrespect intended—but it’s quickly becoming one of TV’s most compelling dramas.

This is the part of her speech that she says directly to camera, the most powerful part of her “talk”, because it is so relevant to everything that’s happening today.

“If you don’t have it in you to take up arms against the injustice, then you gotta pray another prayer. And you gotta walk in it with conviction. He will provide, but you gotta do your part. You gotta find what it means for you to be a soldier, beat back against those that are trying to kill everything good and right in the world, and talk about making it great again. We can’t afford to be just citizens in a time of war. That’ll be surrender, that’ll be giving up our future, and our souls. Ain’t nobody get to sit this one out, you hear me?”

  63. 63.

    Uncle Ebeneezer

    April 14, 2017 at 10:26 am

@hovercraft: We did that too!! I’ll probably watch that last scene countless times since I’m just that way about emotionally gripping scenes. Did you also notice the way the camera movement made the lighting on her face shift throughout her speech, giving her angelic, Mother Mary haloes? Incredible. Breaking the 4th wall is always a dangerous thing for a tv show, but this one absolutely stuck the landing, imo. It really took my breath away.

@Uncle Cosmo: It’s a WGN show about the Underground Railroad and last night’s episode featured Harriet Tubman telling her story. Here’s a preview. Fantastic series all around.
