Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Lord Smallgloves’ motto: No grift too small, no scheme too petty.

Apart from reinforcing the truth of that, what’s on the agenda for the day?

As a reporter who writes abt ethics & lobbyists, not having WhiteHouse? logs is a very big deal. A major rollback. https://t.co/Iexu2Io9zb

Why is @BarackObama spending millions to try and hide his records? He is the least transparent President–ever–and he ran on transparency.

Today’s contribution to the Annals of Chutzpah: Chris Christie rips ‘liar’ Eli Manning: ‘He got caught’ in fake memorabilia scheme In it there is this little gem:

Christie, who is reportedly exploring a career in sports talk radio after his term ends, spared no criticism of “the liar Eli Manning” while discussing the unfolding lawsuit.

I guess we won’t have Chis Christie to kick around anymore…. Oh, who am I kidding? We’re going to kick that lying, loudmouthed, useless prick around every chance we get, especially whenever he gets the pizza order wrong.

Cleek’s law as a governing philosophy not working out so well. But Drumpf’s die hards think every single thing he does is great BECAUSE it pisses off liberals. I’m seeing comments to that effect from friends of friends on the cesspool of stupid people and cute animal videos that FB has become.

I have to go back to work today though tomorrow we’re off. I worked Thursday night because they needed help moving the files from two rooms. The move had been expected literally for two months, but when I got there the office manager hadn’t planned any strategy for moving the shelves and files other than us just sliding them to their new location, apparently unaware that the flimsy metal shelves were bolted to the wall, weighed over 600lbs fully loaded, and were too tall to slide through the door. I was livid. They called yesterday for me to come in, but I had made plans and wouldn’t change them, so I expect major blowback at some point today. And I will go apeshit on her ass if it starts. Worst manager in my almost 50 years of work.

Just ironic that after looking for another job for months and having what should be a perfect one fall into my lap, now I’m counting the days until I can quit.
She’s a nice person IRL, but as a manager she’s the worst: petty authoritarian and unable to think strategically or proactively.

@amk: in Eric Hoffer’s construction of the “True Believer”, far left and far right have more in common with each other than they do with the rest of us. More like the line from left to right is the outer circle of a pie chart with those two slices next to each other and the rest of the political spectrum taking up the rest of the pie. Nothing I’ve seen has ever refuted that in my opinion.

Almost missed in coverage of the announcement about the WH visitor logs (although I see it’s mentioned in the NYT caption above) was this tidbit:

Along with the policy reversal comes the end of the open WhiteHouse.gov website, which the administration calls duplicative of other federal government information sites. By closing the site, the White House estimates it will save over $70,000 in taxpayer dollars by 2020.

It’s the bolded part that gets me. A whopping $70,000 savings over a three-year period, WOW!! That’s one-third of the individual membership fee for Mar-a-Lago.

ImageAt COD John created his own outlet to further his objective – he formed a comedy troupe with friends Tino Insana and Steve Beshakes, with whom he shared a common love for music, good times and laughing. Laughs abounded whenever the three got together, and for fun, John taught Tino and Steve scenes he had learned at the Compass Theater. Soon they were performing in friends’ living rooms, then at parties. When they began working up material of their own, they dubbed themselves the West Compass Players and booked jobs at local schools and events.

Didn’t some RWNJ legal group – Judicial Watch, maybe? – sue the Clinton administration to release the logs of who HRC talked to about health care? And win?

Thus the suffering his maladministration inflicts on good, honest people is so much collateral damage. If such people didn’t want to suffer, they should have, like virtually all fundamentalist Christians, compromised their beliefs in order to benefit from his rule.

I guess we won’t have Chis Christie to kick around anymore…. Oh, who am I kidding?

Sports talk radio hosts tend to be republican assholes up here, so he should fit right in, as for him having the chutzpah to call anyone a liar, at this point we should just make a note of when a republican is not lying. Their entire governing philosophy is predicated on lying, claim they are doing one thing while they do the opposite, accuse the democrats of doing what they secretly plan to do.
Christie being a lying hypocrite, is not shocking for any of us who have had the misfortune of living through his governorship, the countdown is on, can’t wait till he joins the rest of the many corrupt embarrassments we’ve had the bad judgment to elect here in the Garden State. There is one bright spot in all this, He went from a media darling, slated to be felated all the way to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. the the pathetic liar forced to claim that he was a clueless dupe who had no idea what was going on right under his nose.

Outside of one friend and myself, they’re all Yankees fans because the Mets stunk and the Yankees were winning the WS when we were kids. (Not even sure why I became a Mets fan but my one friend was because his father was a Brooklyn Dodger die-hard and would not have raised a Yankee fan.) But while I have always been a Giants fan with a side of Jets (different conference so easy to root for both outside of head-to-head) many of my friends, including my fellow Mets fan, are die-hard Cowboy fans, even to this day. Because the Giants were losers when we were kids.

Interestingly, one of my friends was and is a Bucs fan and they stunk more than the Giants. He liked their helmets…the old ones, with the pirate in a feathery hat.

@Alain the site fixer: No problem, they’re both pretty easy.

    Slow cooker chili:
    1 lb. lean ground beef
    1 packet McCormick chili seasoning
3 15 oz. cans diced tomatoes (I use the “no salt added”)
2 15 oz. cans kidney beans (I use cannellinis – they’re more tender and add a bit of color)
1 15 oz. can tomato sauce (I also use the “no salt added” variety)
1/3 cup Splenda (I have type 2 diabetes. The original recipe uses brown sugar.)

Feel free to substitute your own from-scratch ingredients with these or add more veggies like peppers. (Chili recipes seem to be very personal.) I just wanted something simple to put together. I was trying to duplicate my mom’s chili, which was one of my favorite comfort foods when I was a kid.

Six to eight hours on low in the slow cooker and you’ve got eight servings of deliciousness. (I use a Hamilton Beach Intellitime so I let the slow cooker figure out the temperature.) Four hours on high also works if you’re in a hurry.

Donald Trump waving from the Queen’s royal carriage is not a scenario many would have foreseen a year ago, but it has become a very real prospect, forcing security services to plan an unprecedented lockdown.
The White House has made clear it regards the carriage procession down the Mall as an essential element of the itinerary for the visit currently planned for the second week of October, according to officials.

Actually, I think the most applicable line from The Maltese Falcon comes late in the movie, when Gutman realizes how big a mistake he’s made and Joel Cairo blows a gasket:

“You… you imbecile. You bloated idiot. You stupid fat-head you.”

I love crustless quiche. If we have leftover chicken, ham or sausage and sauteed vegetables, it’s an easy and pretty quick meal.

    @Alain the site fixer:

Base recipe for the crustless quiche (adjust ingredients to suit your taste):

1 16 oz. Egg Beaters (or similar egg substitute. I believe this is equivalent to 10 eggs.)
    4 tbsp. all-purpose flour
3 cups milk (I use skim)
4 cups shredded cheese (i usually use sharp cheddar but I’ve also used swiss)

I use a hand blender to mix these together. Bake at 450 for 55 minutes.

That’s the base. I usually add veggies (easiest – nuke some frozen of your choice). I’ve also added bacon bits (either soy or the real thing) and sometimes I sprinkle shredded parmesan on top before cooking to give them a nice little crusty top.

Jazz it up any way you want. For example, chopped spinach, pine nuts and goat cheese gives you a nice Greek style quiche. You could also jazz it up with sundried tomatoes.
This makes eight servings and it refrigerates well. (I haven’t tried freezing them but I assume that works as well.)

It would be cool if a Front Pager would throw up a dedicated Meet Up thread maybe on a Wednesday before these marches. People could pipe in with their areas, pick places for Juicers to meet, if they wanted to….no pressure, no planning clusterfucks. Just a suggestion. Look forward to meeting you. I just put up an invite on my Book of Faces page to generate some interest. My neighborhood peeps pretty much hang at Howards on Saturday and Sunday anyway. Soulard is a neighborhood of misfits, hippies, and derelicts….we like our music and cocktails ?…Ozark will attest to it from his days in the area.?

Yes. Pretty much always, though the effect is enhanced when the line is actually from The Maltese Falcon and not some other old school classic that all non-bot Americans know.

Jesus H Christ, how many times do I need to say “yes, I know it’s from Casablanca” before people realize it was a fucking joke?

No doubt, if I had said it was from The Invisible Man or The Adventures of Robin Hood, THAT joke would have been lost on people, too.

There are people who support Trump who will never stop supporting him.

In the last days of Hitler’s Germany, adults were sending their children to the front lines to fight for Hitler. Hitler met the children and was photographed bucking them up for their impending deaths on his lost cause.

Little slow this morning? I never ever get there before someone else.

I don’t even get up before anyone else! Dad worked second shift, often at work til 2 or 3 am. I worked there starting when I was 14, summers full time, during school part time. Second shift is my natural rhythm. So I lie in bed and read til 1 or 2 am, sleep til 9 or 10 or so. Less sleeping as I age.

By the way: was it you that mentioned Lion a few days ago? If it wasn’t, and you haven’t already seen it, you might enjoy it. In a weird way — mainly because I’m weird — I found it both depressing and (although I hate this word) uplifting.

    @SFAW:

That’s exactly the same reaction I had. Normally I run miles to avoid movies about poverty and slums and lost children; I hated Slumdog Millionaire. But Lion got to me from the first I heard about it. I will say, I’ve never cried so much at a movie in my life, and not just at the end, when the tears were literally dripping off my chin. So, I’m reluctant to recommend it to people — I don’t know how they’d take it — but it was a really amazing experience and I’m glad I saw it.
