Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Wisconsin man accused of robbing gun shop and sending 161-page manifesto to Trump has been found after 10-day search https://t.co/ieUVbzXs5v

— The New York Times (@nytimes) April 14, 2017

All too normal, in these United States of the NRA:

More than 150 local, state and federal law enforcement officials had been searching for Jakubowski, whom authorities suspected of stealing at least 16 high-end firearms April 4 from a gun shop in Janesville, a town not far from Wisconsin’s southern border. Police said he had written a 161-page antigovernment and anti-religion manifesto, which he apparently mailed to President Trump at the White House…

The Rock County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that local authorities in Vernon County received a call late Thursday about a man matching Jakubowski’s description who was camping and refused to leave the area.

About 6 a.m. Friday, officers approached Jakubowski, who was found under a tarp on the property with four handguns, one long gun, boxes of ammunition, a samurai sword, containers of flammable liquid, a protective helmet and vest, and a copy of his manifesto, authorities said. He was taken into custody without incident, authorities said, and is being taken to Rock County to face charges…

Moore, the Janesville police chief, said last week that Jakubowski has had run-ins with local authorities, including one incident in which he tried to disarm an officer.

But, he said, police had not seen his “antigovernment or terrorist-type” behavior.

“That is a new element for all of us,” Moore said. “Most of his activities have been anger-driven either toward the officers or toward other individuals, but not the antigovernment rhetoric, and that is a new piece to this investigation.”…

No (official) word on the other high-end firearms. Since this originated in the Speaker’s home town, am I a bad person that my first thought was “Somebody check Paul Ryan’s gun safe?”

    Pace Daria: Sick Sad World.

An Ohio man who allegedly shot and killed another man while streaming it live on Facebook on Sunday claimed in the video that he snapped because of a woman, according to police, who urged the suspect to turn himself in.

Law enforcement was searching the Cleveland area and beyond for Steve Stephens, the suspect who police said walked up to an elderly man and shot him while on video, said Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams. Source

Meanwhile oin the other side of the globe –

Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs called the alleged detention and killings of gay and bisexual men in Chechnya “reprehensible,” as LGBT rights groups called on the international community to act.

In a statement released Saturday, Chrystia Freeland called on Russian authorities to investigate the reports and “to immediately ensure the safety of all persons in Chechnya who may be at risk due to their sexual orientation.”

The allegations that up to 100 men are being detained prompted a protest outside the Russian embassy in London on Wednesday.

Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta has reported that at least three of those men have been killed in secret prisons described as “concentration camps.” It also reported threats from Chechen religious leaders of “reprisals” for its coverage of the issue. Source

    Two things about this:

    1) Nary so much as a murmur from the administration here
    2) Asking Russia to investigate? Go on, pull the other one.

Another thing Dolt 45 will announce is “complicated.”

President Donald Trump’s promised wall on the U.S.-Mexican border — the funding for which is still a matter of mystery — would leave a number of United States residents who currently live near the border on the “Mexican side,” NBC News reported Sunday.
    [snip]
“How would we get out?” homeowner Pamela Taylor, 88, asked NBC. “Do they realize that they’re penalizing people that live along this river on the American side?”
    [snip]
Construction of the border wall could do little to deter foreigners from entering the country, according to a recent study in the American Journal of Sociology, but it could backfire for Trump by making border crossings more inconvenient and risky, thus encouraging some migrants to stay in the U.S. longer. But, he said, police had not seen his “antigovernment or terrorist-type” behavior.

They did not WANT to see it. He’s a white guy. He’s OK. Now, if he was a “Black Lives Matter” activist, who didn’t rob a gun store, they’d probably have shot him in the back.

@Villago Delenda Est: Yeah. This guy had “four handguns, one long gun, boxes of ammunition, a samurai sword” in his possession — and yet people get shot because an officer thought maybe they had a gun, even when they didn’t. Hard not to think there’s another factor in play.

    And claimed it was suicide.

This white terrorist privilege has got to stop. Because otherwise it is going to end very badly and probably very messily.

I would understand being afraid of someone like this.

And yet he’s not shot dead.

But being black = scary. Yes, you’re a fucking racist shit bastard when you shot the black guy because you were “afraid”.

    @NotMax:

” Construction of the border wall could do little to deter foreigners from entering the country, according to a recent study in the American Journal of Sociology, making border crossings more inconvenient and risky, thus encouraging some migrants to stay in the U.S. longer. ”

The confusion of immigration policy by executive order since the half forgotten Dub proposal for immigration reform hit miserable GOPer Congress brick wall, and increasing deportation activity may have already done that. At least that is the anecdata I have from family farm connections in Central Valley. Undocumenteds staying longer and making less frequent visits back home.

The Trumpsters will scoff of course, but most here already know that Obama stepped up deportations and border security. Inflows haven’t recovered since Great Recession. The Great Drumpf Wall is a stupid solution to the wrong problem. Completely asinine. But at least less likely to start WWIII than other Drumpf policies, I guess that is all that can be said for it.

Edit: I hear that the Drumpfsters are short handed at admin and PR, the Easter Egg Roll being one example. I’ll help them with a slogan for The Wall:

The Wall! Less Likely to Start WWIII than Other Dumb Trump Ideas!

Meanwhile, on the “terrorism” front in STL:

BRENTWOOD • Police said two suspicious packages at the Brentwood MetroLink station were made to look like explosives.

A bomb and arson squad from the St. Louis County Police Department was called in to investigate the packages, which were discovered before 8 p.m. Saturday. Detectives worked the case for more than three hours. The packages were determined to be harmless but made to resemble explosive devices, police said Sunday.

For someone your media turned into some kind of super terrorist warrenting a nationwide manhunt and ten minute updates ohmyfrackinggodtheskyisfalling, wasn’t that much of a badass afterall. Hiding under a tarp in the rain two hours drive from his mamas’ house, two hours from the scene of the crime. Surrendered without a fight. Typical white dog.

They arn’t doing it, or are doing it on the fly with no prep. You havn’t heard about it because of all the truly fucked up things dominate the news more. But some ‘journalists’ think this is important to report on, so we hear about snippets of the Ill douches admin.
