Let’s make this an open thread for GA-6. Sounds like Ossoff’s a long shot to go over 50%, but let’s see what happens. I had good luck with the NYT coverage last time, so I’ll give a link here.

20% in – Ossoff holding at 57%.
MattM
Over 50 is less of a longshot than it looked like this morning.
And the bar set by his doubters–outperforming Clinton’s 46ish percent–seems likely to be cleared.
Sarah in Brooklyn
Looks like more of a longshot as the results come in. Feels like it’s taking forever!

I think I’m gonna ramp up The Band singing “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and hear about Virgil Cain and the Danville Train. Should it be Levon w/ that Arkansas accent or Joan Baez??
JPL
Debby Downer is hoping he tops forty percent. North Fulton hasn’t reported and turnout among old white guys in pickups and cadillacs was big.
SiubhanDuinne
Most of this is reposted from downstairs.
With 20% of precincts reporting, Ossoff is at 57% of the total vote.
Spent the entire day poll-watching at four different locations, one of which I went to twice. And then towards the end of the afternoon someone from the GA Dem boiler room called and asked me if I would go to a voting location that had problems this morning and opened late (thus, were under court order to stay open late) and would I report back on any remaining issues. Which I did, of course, but man am I exhausted.
Sure hope Ossoff can pull out the 50%+1 today, if for no other reason than that I don’t want to go through another super-long day of poll-watching in two months for a runoff election (because electoral outcomes are, naturally, all about me and how tired I am). Seriously, there’s an incredible amount of interest in this race — one location where I spent several hours had both network and local TV, an AP photographer, and probably others I didn’t catch.
The fact that Trump is tweeting so insanely about this race tells me he is VERRRRY worried

I am doing my happy dance! We had a special election here tonight as well for Clerk of the Court. Democrat Jacqueline Smith won 55 to 45. Our county is a bellwether for Virginia. Most of our local officials are Republican. We worked hard to get out the vote, especially absentee voting. I volunteered a few weeks ago to hand out sample ballots at the DMV and vote absentee. Everyone’s work paid off.
patroclus
@Lizzy L: Yeah, and Danko on guitar (and they need to turn Robbie’s mic off). Joan Baez didn’t even record the correct lyrics – she just based it on hearing the Band’s version (but she does have an amazing voice)..
PaulWartenberg
to me, it’s amazing how much of an overall lead Ossoff has over all the candidates, but that’s merely an illusion based on there being 4 different Republican candidates vying for those votes. Still, for Ossoff to have that much support over any one Republican is a good sign: it’s telling that the top-vote Republican isn’t breaking 20 percent at the moment.

The FTFNYT has DeKalb at 95 percent reporting, as of 5 or 10 minutes ago. Ossoff did slightly better than Hillary there. In Fulton, he’s currently running at about 55 percent, but I have no idea if the precincts reporting (so far) are primarily blue, primarily red, or what. The general had Shitgibbon beating Hillary by 48.9 to 46.4.

It has turned into a sour joke. Fire melts a chunk of I-85. Chunk of I-20 buckles. Buford Highway catches on fire. I’m sure there are more events I’m forgetting.

@SiubhanDuinne: Good work, Mme Duinne. May you be watching the results with a glass of red, and may they be good.
Some good news in NoVA: longtime and fairly moderate suburban Republican delegate Dave Albo surprised everyone by retiring suddenly; decided not to contest this fall as district is pretty safely turning blue (went 57% for Hillary). WaPost suggests this might have been the first Trump effect in Virginia, although state legislature is appallingly gerrymandered for GOP.
I know Tilly personally — she was amazing during 2012 for Obama — our former OFA organizer is running her campaign; delighted to hear she’s running; and Kathy, whom I don’t know, literally lives in my former neighborhood. Heard that the ladies on my block are very excited about supporting her and have done some house parties. So it’s all good.

Those of us involved in re-building our local organizations cannot afford to dis Bernie openly — in our rural area, we need all the Democrats/progressives on our side and here in WA state, Bernie was very important in rural northwest WA. So we have to keep redirecting everyone to look at the bigger picture and keep nice smiles in place.
Bernie’s followers have some of the same cultish outlook that the Trumpists have. There is no logic or rationality that reaches the deep emotions they hold. Its all we can do to keep them more or less on the topic because in two seconds we are back re-litigating how Hillary and the DNC screwed Bernie. That is not a detour that we can afford to take but trust me, we will be handling these folks with kid gloves and soft tones from now on until we can groom some sort of replacement. These are white men (mostly) and some women and they truly have the look of and sometimes sound like a cult. They are not thinking about the same things as we are. They are wounded and looking for revenge of some sort. That energy has to be redirected to something positive that will benefit us or they will get lost again “counting coup” on those of us they think betrayed Saint Bernie. This instead of figuring out our messaging and picking candidates to run against the red horkers …

He may have been running for this office, because his own re-election did not look good. Hope this link works:

The council returns are really late. Where I was today Hillary lost by ten to fifteen percent, so that means a runoff for Jon. Roswell had both a council runoff and the 6th turnout race. I get you, totally. Again, we NEED them and they make up a significant proportion of the local “party” leaders in the rural and northwestern areas, so there is no escape. Again, the MO is to keep them focused on what we need to be doing cause otherwise, if the conversation lags, we are back in Hillary/DNC wars. As I was saying, NO LOGIC PENETRATES — no facts (other than what they already believe). They have to be outflanked and I worry that they will always be this way as long as Bernie is on the national scene in some way. Sheesh. Listen, the luxury of “having it with Bernie”, comes from not worrying about whether you can bring enough of the progressives together in our legislative district to elect critical positions in the state legislature and yes, school boards. You are way too smart to not know how important that is and how sometimes we have to swallow some shit to” keep the thing togetha” to get our thing done. So yes, that would insure that he’d dislike Dems and Rethugs about equally. Which he continues to prove every time he opens his mouth. And the DNC seems to be enthralled with him. So the Democratic candidate who won the popular vote gets nothing and the person who worked endlessly trying to cause her to lose gets air time courtesy of the DNC. I wouldn’t say that they are “worth it” — but numbers wise, we NEED them. So yes, they are worth it. Please understand, they represent a sizable group up here in the hinterlands. Hillary was boss down in the Seattle and suburbs, but up here, Bernie ran the table. She won our area so enough Bernie folks did vote for her and Hilz won WA state, but her loss has resurrected all this old shit that we have no way past. Our hopefully good local candidates will hopefully change the conversation, but we don’t have them to talk about yet, and our legislative district org is new and trying to get on its feet, so we need everybody…

If there’s a runoff that’s June 20. I’m expecting the FBI indictments to have dropped by then. Tom Price may well be caught up in that. Trump and his family and cabal certainly will. It’ll be interesting to see if that has any effect on the runoff. Hope a runoff isn’t needed, though.

Karen Handel tanked the Susan G Komen Foundation by trying to cut off mammogram funding to Planned Parenthood.
There will be commercials talking about how Handel doesn’t care about other women dying of breast cancer and just wants to make money off her dead sister. It ain’t gonna be pretty.

54% in – Ossoff still at 50%.
(One precinct every hour, at this rate we’ll know by Sunday).

@Steve in the ATL: I’ve been reading that if there was a run off, Dems were hoping that she’ll be the GOP candidate. She’s beatable because of her scandals and she’s generally a weak candidate.

@Origuy:
All the previous election cycles I have worked have been in Gwinnett County (which wasn’t a factor in today’s voting, as it lies outside the 6th). But I’m spoiled. Gwinnett has probably the most open, transparent, honest voting process in all of metro Atlanta, which probably means in all of the state of Georgia. Fulton is probably the worst, in my limited experience.

@patroclus: Roswell is starting to come in. One of the large precincts that I was at is starting to report. I know this, cuz of the council race and they are able to get the info. No idea how Jon did, but it sure didn’t look good when I was there. The candidate that I supported for council did outstanding though.
I promise that I will not get out the vote on June 20th though.

@Steve in the ATL: but the pundtwits keep telling us she will be his weakest opponent?
weaselone
@SiubhanDuinne:
The problem is that beside Ossoff, Dems and independents combine for slightly less than 1% of the total vote. It’s certain that all or nearly all of the Republicans will rally to the Republican candidate in the runoff. If he doesn’t crack 50% here, there’s a good chance he doesn’t crack it in the runoff either.
JPL
@Yarrow: There were lots of Ossoff sign wavers where I was at, and I mentioned that I thought Handel would be easier to beat. We like our white hair repub guys here, and I also mentioned that Trump had to do something stupid. She felt better after the second statement, cuz she figured that would happen.

That’s not very nice, that picture of Bert and Ernie. Equating them to BS. Low fucking blow.
I dealt with someone with dementia for 20 yrs. It ain’t pretty. It’s why I say that drumpf is to me showing signs of dementia. But I don’t think BS is. What he is, is a fucking burned out hippy who is just chock full of his own bullshit.
Yarrow
@Elie: Politics is local, as you’ve pointed out. In your area you may have to indulge the B.S. crowd. In other areas they may be more easily absorbed into Dem politics.
He’s got Russian connections that will come out. Campaign manager as well as tech manager. Also the Russians used disinformation and “fake news” targeting the far left on Facebook, etc., as well as fake B-bots on Twitter to talk him up well after his sell-by date and to take advantage and increase divisions in the Dem party.
I think that sort of thing will come out once the indictments are issued and hearings start. I hope it shakes up some of the B.S. fans. Not all will believe it, but some may.

@Steve in the ATL: Oh, I’m with you there. I’m not rejoicing in a moral victory, I’m thinking about the run-off and about 2018. If Ossoff doesn’t win outright, I hope he keeps it close. And scares the shit out of the Rs.

Trust me — its all I can do to just be quiet. I just hope its worth it and we can bring some sort of approach together and some decent candidates…

@weaselone: I don’t know Georgia politics but that’s pretty unlikely to be true. Every campaign has some percentage that is in it for the candidate and the candidate alone….think friends, family, acquaintances. And in a primate campaign sometimes enemies are made that stick. No telling what happens in the runoff, it will be different dynamics altogether.

I could give a fuck about Bernie. I want to get back on the grid for our leg district, the State and then ultimately nationally. I am happy if we can make him a non factor — however. I do not want 2 seconds of attention paid to him even in the event that he is caught with the Russians, which they would just twist to make the Dems not better than Trump. I just want him to stop being a factor and to disappear. He is 74 and hopefully will slow down some soon…

The tricky part is that all of that stuff is also symptomatic of ADHD, which other people have suspected for years he has (there’s a reason a spoiled, pampered rich kid like Trump ended up in military school — it was a common “solution” in the 1950s for ADHD boys).
I’m assuming he kept calling Paul Ryan “Ron Paul” by mistake and not “Ron Ryan”?

That, too. Kids with disabilities (including learning disabilities like ADHD) are frequently the targets of parental abuse or neglect, and Trump’s dad sounds like a right asshole.

I think Sanders just likes the attention . Think about it, he’s from Vermont where getting a crowd of a couple of thousand people is a big deal. Hes not from an important purple state, not a big powerful blue state like NY,not an important primary state like NH. I didn’t really have a strong opinion on Sanders until it became obvious he wasn’t going to win and didn’t drop out,and at some event Jane Sanders tried to say something at the podium and he basically waved off the podium. That really turned me off him. He just came across like a sexist old fart.

Both my parents and one grandmother had dementia while living with us. Mom was not afflicted for a long a time like my dad, gram also only about 4-5 yrs. Different reasons and some different affects because of that, but in many ways a lot of similarities.
