Let’s make this an open thread for GA-6. Sounds like Ossoff’s a long shot to go over 50%, but let’s see what happens. I had good luck with the NYT coverage last time, so I’ll give a link here.

    20% in – Ossoff holding at 57%.

Over 50 is less of a longshot than it looked like this morning.

And the bar set by his doubters–outperforming Clinton’s 46ish percent–seems likely to be cleared.

Most of this is reposted from downstairs.

With 20% of precincts reporting, Ossoff is at 57% of the total vote.

Spent the entire day poll-watching at four different locations, one of which I went to twice. And then towards the end of the afternoon someone from the GA Dem boiler room called and asked me if I would go to a voting location that had problems this morning and opened late (thus, were under court order to stay open late) and would I report back on any remaining issues. Which I did, of course, but man am I exhausted.

Sure hope Ossoff can pull out the 50%+1 today, if for no other reason than that I don’t want to go through another super-long day of poll-watching in two months for a runoff election (because electoral outcomes are, naturally, all about me and how tired I am). Seriously, there’s an incredible amount of interest in this race — one location where I spent several hours had both network and local TV, an AP photographer, and probably others I didn’t catch.

The fact that Trump is tweeting so insanely about this race tells me he is VERRRRY worried

I am doing my happy dance! We had a special election here tonight as well for Clerk of the Court. Democrat Jacqueline Smith won 55 to 45. Our county is a bellwether for Virginia. Most of our local officials are Republican. We worked hard to get out the vote, especially absentee voting. I volunteered a few weeks ago to hand out sample ballots at the DMV and vote absentee. Everyone’s work paid off.

to me, it’s amazing how much of an overall lead Ossoff has over all the candidates, but that’s merely an illusion based on there being 4 different Republican candidates vying for those votes. Still, for Ossoff to have that much support over any one Republican is a good sign: it’s telling that the top-vote Republican isn’t breaking 20 percent at the moment.

Let’s start with an election that’s actually happening tomorrow, between Jacqueline Smith (D) and Jackson Miller (R) for Clerk of the Circuit Court in Prince William County. My question on this one is simple: why haven’t Democrats given Smith enough money to match Miller, or at least come close? I mean, PW County only went for Obama twice and Clinton by a big margin…

    Jackson Miller (R): $157,806 plus $77,500 in “last-minute money”
Jacqueline Smith (D): $35,535 and no “last-minute money.”

Congratulations on the well deserved win, and thanks for all your work!

    April 18, 2017 at 9:59 pm

@SiubhanDuinne: Good work, Mme Duinne. May you be watching the results with a glass of red, and may they be good.

Some good news in NoVA: longtime and fairly moderate suburban Republican delegate Dave Albo surprised everyone by retiring suddenly; decided not to contest this fall as district is pretty safely turning blue (went 57% for Hillary). WaPost suggests this might have been the first Trump effect in Virginia, although state legislature is appallingly gerrymandered for GOP.

Until this week, the Virginia House of Delegates district held by Del. David B. Albo for 23 years seemed like a lock in November for Republicans working to hold their solid majority in Richmond amid what Democrats hope will be a voter backlash against President Trump.

But Albo (R-Fairfax) surprised his party by announcing Wednesday that he won’t seek a 12th term — a move that has Republicans scrambling for a replacement in a vulnerable Fairfax County district where Democrats are ready to pounce.

“It’s going to be really difficult for Republicans to retain that district,” said Quentin Kidd, director of Christopher Newport University’s Wason Center for Public Policy.

“There is going to be a lot of headwind coming out of Trump’s White House,” Kidd said. “In the two and a half decades I’ve been watching Virginia politics, I haven’t seen Democrats as energized or organized for General Assembly races as I’m seeing them get now.”

Albo said he decided against seeking reelection for financial reasons. Taking time off from his work as a criminal defense lawyer in Northern Virginia for as many as 100 days per year to attend to business in Richmond eats into his ability to earn money for retirement and for his 11-year-old son’s college fund, Albo, 54, said in an interview.

“It’s been a struggle,” he said. “I’m not saying I’m going to be thrown out of my house or anything. But I’ve got to make money to properly care for my family.”

Since he took office in 1994, Albo’s 42nd District — stretching from West Springfield southeast to Mason Neck — has become increasingly Democratic.

Hillary Clinton won 57 percent of the vote there in last year’s presidential election. President Barack Obama, Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Sen. Mark R. Warner, all Democrats, also won their contests in the 42nd. Former Republican governor Robert F. McDonnell took 54 percent of the vote there in 2009.

… Whether Albo’s departure will affect the 66-34 Republican majority in the House of Delegates [gag!] is uncertain.

But Democrats smell blood in the water.

House Democratic leader David J. Toscano (Charlottesville) characterized Albo’s decision to step down as part of “a rising tide of . . . resistance” in Virginia.

“Delegate Albo is now the eighth Republican incumbent in the House of Delegates to announce that he will either retire or seek other office,” Toscano said in a statement, which also called Albo “a wonderful friend” who has made “substantial contributions” during his legislative career.

“Meanwhile, we have 77 Democrats running in 49 districts currently held by Republicans, including all 17 that Hillary Clinton won,” the statement said. “This news speaks both to the strength of our candidates and the rising tide of the resistance.”

Albo conceded that his district is now vulnerable. He has yet to meet with anyone interested in stepping in, he said.

“It’s going to be a hard seat for Republicans to win, to be honest with you,” he said. “But the right Republican could win. If someone is a more community-minded Republican like I tried to be, I think that’s the right formula.”

… The two Democrats vying to compete for Albo’s seat in their party’s June 13 primary say Albo’s departure improves their chances in November.

Tilly Blanding, 66, a retired Fairfax County social worker, has been campaigning to oust Albo — among other things, highlighting his unwillingness to fight for Medicaid expansion in Virginia and calling him weak on women’s rights.

She vowed to stick to her message with the powerful incumbent out of the picture.

“I’m not going to work any less hard,” Blanding said.

Kathy Tran, a former U.S. Labor Department deputy administrator, praised Albo and said she’s the best candidate to fill his shoes — albeit with a progressive bent.

“I think he’s been someone who cares very deeply about this community,” said Tran, 38. “We’ve been given the opportunity for people in this district to vote for someone who has the same progressive values they share and who will stand up for them.”

Tran said she entered the race believing it could be a close election.

“But now it’s really competitive,” she said. “I’m really excited to be in the race.”

I know Tilly personally — she was amazing during 2012 for Obama — our former OFA organizer is running her campaign; delighted to hear she’s running; and Kathy, whom I don’t know, literally lives in my former neighborhood. Heard that the ladies on my block are very excited about supporting her and have done some house parties. So it’s all good.

Those of us involved in re-building our local organizations cannot afford to dis Bernie openly — in our rural area, we need all the Democrats/progressives on our side and here in WA state, Bernie was very important in rural northwest WA. So we have to keep redirecting everyone to look at the bigger picture and keep nice smiles in place.

Bernie’s followers have some of the same cultish outlook that the Trumpists have. There is no logic or rationality that reaches the deep emotions they hold. Its all we can do to keep them more or less on the topic because in two seconds we are back re-litigating how Hillary and the DNC screwed Bernie. That is not a detour that we can afford to take but trust me, we will be handling these folks with kid gloves and soft tones from now on until we can groom some sort of replacement. These are white men (mostly) and some women and they truly have the look of and sometimes sound like a cult. They are not thinking about the same things as we are. They are wounded and looking for revenge of some sort. That energy has to be redirected to something positive that will benefit us or they will get lost again “counting coup” on those of us they think betrayed Saint Bernie. This instead of figuring out our messaging and picking candidates to run against the red horkers …

@Adam L Silverman: Thanks. Not sure why you linked me specifically, but it’s interesting. I’ve read a couple of people whose specialty is brain issues or dementia and they all say similar things. It’s pretty scary for us as a country.

@Lizzy L: And Jorma (something or another) – another A Serious Man reference. That Coen Bros movie is one of the best dark comedies I’ve seen – just hilarious!

    @Ruckus:

I do understand not having Hillary on the road

But there are dozens of dynamic DEMOCRATIC senators and congresscritters who could’ve traveled with Perez. Or if any one of them couldn’t have committed the time, they could have tag teamed it.

@Lizzy L: Yeah, I know – I’ve seen him in concert here in Chi-town. But in the movie, the rabbi doesn’t even try to pronounce his name and the Bar Mitzvah boy just smiles.

@Adam L Silverman: I’ve been complaining about our voting machines here for years. We have to get more Democrats elected to the state legislature and into state wide office to have any hope of them ditching the out of date and very hackable with no paper trail Diebold voting machines.

@Adam L Silverman: No worries! I thought you might have meant someone mentioning dementia. It’s still interesting. I like reading the experts’ take on it. A lot can be determined from watching him over time.

I think Sanders just likes the attention . Think about it, he’s from Vermont where getting a crowd of a couple of thousand people is a big deal. Hes not from an important purple state, not a big powerful blue state like NY,not an important primary state like NH. I didn’t really have a strong opinion on Sanders until it became obvious he wasn’t going to win and didn’t drop out,and at some event Jane Sanders tried to say something at the podium and he basically waved off the podium. That really turned me off him. He just came across like a sexist old fart.

This thread about Sanders’ ties to Russia is informative. Click through to read the whole thing.

    1. I get asked how/if Bernie is "tied to Russia" a lot, so time for a thread on this…@CCLCatCam https://t.co/E5iLsltjzN— Adam Khan (@Khanoisseur) April 18, 2017

@JPL: Re the slow results I would NOT put anything past Secretary of State Brian Kemp. Withholding results from the more likely GOP leaning precincts would be something he’d do. After all, he dismissed complaints about the integrity of the voting machines and early on pooh-poohed the very idea of a strong Democratic showing in the 6th.

    That’s pretty intetesting.

The video with him autographing hats handed to him by individuals and tossing the signed hats to assembled masses is pretty f-ing odd, too.

    Checked it out.
My very non professional opinion seems to be right on the money.
Both my parents and one grandmother had dementia while living with us. Mom was not afflicted for a long a time like my dad, gram also only about 4-5 yrs. Different reasons and some different affects because of that, but in many ways a lot of similarities.
