I just asked on Facebook, “What is so rare as a day in April?” Best time of the year. I haven’t even used up one day of summer yet. Not one. Summer is nothing but sheer potential right now. As each summer day ticks by, the days already gone become only the regretted remnants of 1000 shattered dreams. Now, they’re all ahead of us, full of wonder. It should be April all year, so summer would always be only a few weeks away…

It’s almost summer in Florida but 2 months ago we had spring and it was pollen. Only a month of yellow cars and buildings this year. It’s been so dry we have burn bans and the pollen only lasted one month. Last 2 years it was longer and sinus agony. I like the cool and flowers but getting more and more allergic each year hurts.
Gainesville has decades of strict tree conservation rules which make this shadier city much more pleasant in summer than Orlando was growing up and about 10 degrees cooler on average but it’s amazing how much pollen oaks and pines think they need to produce.
Just being a bit contrarian.

How lovely.
Spring and Atlanta were made for each other. Every time I get thoroughly pissed off at the American South, I remember how much I love this season. Sometimes it starts in January. The flowering trees and shrubberies are extraordinary — forsythia, dogwood, redbud, rhododendron, azalea, Bradford pear, hydrangea, magnolia, and I’m sure many others that I’m forgetting. Just magnificent.

We now have eagles nesting in WV all over, as fish have begun to recover from mining damage to streams. They are beautiful birds, except to the trout. And the bass. Here we have Kingfishers, and hawks and owls, but no or very few eagles.
Occasional Great Blue Herons working the little creeks hard, and they are amazing birds! And big woodpeckers, Piliated Woodpeckers, the last really big woodpecker left after the Ivory Billed were done in by habitat destruction. They’re obviously dinosaurs, just listen to them!
And we do have lots of Ruby-throated hummers, the only eastern species. Lots of canopy birds, and in some places pasture and field birds around the edges of the woods.

That is so cool. Watching adult animals teach their babies how to be whatever they are meant to be is one of life’s great joys. Years ago I watched a mother squirrel patiently show her kits how to climb a tree in a spiral pattern — not just straight up the way the babies wanted to do, but round and round to confuse whatever creature might be chasing them. It was fascinating.

No, it didn’t. I arrived March 2 or 3, at 2 or 3 am, sleeting rain. They had us learn to stand in formation, in the dark and sleet, at attention.
Sweet, learn how it’s gonna be right off the bat, and expect it to go down hill after that!! ‘Cause it sure did! In mid April I got pneumonia after spending all night shoveling snow off the grinder, and made to stay in my rack on antibiotics, which endeared me to the other recruits who were standing duty and marching around the base!
Oh, well, I survived the whole experience.

I don’t understand why anyone cares about this stuff.
I earnestly hope the Democrats can move beyond running either HRC or Sanders, or having either of them ‘run’ the party in future years.
How many ordinary voters that the Dems are trying to turn out on their side give a rat’s ass whether Sanders is a Democrat or pay attention to what relatively minor details he and Perez are disagreeing on? For example, on health care, Trump and the GOP are fine to let the ‘lesser people’ die if they get sick or hurt, Perez and Sanders are against that. Sounds like a political win to me, at least for now.
Sanders is apparently the most popular politician around right now. If the Dems and Sanders are running around trying to use and subvert each other, who care? People will come to watch, and that is what is called ‘outreach’ right?
Also: Glad Cole had a good day.

Including me! Got a call that one of my Monday VA appointments was canceled but I could go to the hospital (across town, and I live in the LA area) and do a walk in. So 3 train rides and a bus later I find out that there is no walk in clinic for this specialty, which I sort of expected but…. So I wait over 2 hrs, last patient, the clinic I’m in is locked with just me and the doc inside when done. I miss the bus back to the train, text message says 30 min till next bus so I start walking the 2 miles. That’s 25 min. About 15 min in the bus drives by. So a trip I never should have had to make took 7 hrs. Good news – I’ll live.

Lettem take THAT goddamned goal away.
I didn’t and don’t expect the Broons to win the series.
Their goalie can be great (he was tonite) but he can also be awful
Their best D was a freshman college player in March
A third of their active roster is really AHL players – including the kid that scored the first and last goals tonite.
And Ottawa is an AWFUL team to play against. They basically turn the ice to slush by their style.
So good on them. Next game Sunday in Boston.

Boot camp in San Diego in late winter/early spring. Passed out in morning chow line, carried to sick call, taken to hospital with a fever of 105, in the back of a pickup truck after dark. Corpsman attempting to take my blood had never stuck a patient before only oranges. After several attempts told him that one more time and he’d have to pick me off the floor. He got help. Ended up a week in hospital and had to go to a new company. Lost that week. They took me in the back of the same pickup to the barracks that housed the guys with “issues.” Walked in to find guys cleaning the grout in the tile floor with toothbrushes. Clerk laughed at me, said you don’t have to do that. Fun times.

@geg6: Is there any way you could drive to an outlying parking lot and Uber in? Or take some form of transportation like rail or bus from an outlying area? Might take a bit longer but would save you a lot of money and hassle worrying about parking every day.
I sympathize with the paucity of places to eat. Last jury situation I was in was for local police, not county or federal. We had 45 minutes for lunch and two choices within walking distance–the police cafeteria, which was on site, or an old diner up the road that was pricey for what you got. You couldn’t get your car to go somewhere else because we had to park in a specific spot with one allowed entrance and exit per day. The people in charge of the jury group told us what the two choices were and said it wasn’t feasible to go anywhere else and be back on time and they were right. So I get where you’re coming from with the frustrating lunch situation.

It came out today that one of Sanders’ “progressive” endorsements co-sponsored a bill in his state legislature to force women to get a vaginal ultrasound probe before they would be allowed to get an abortion. And, yes, the guy is nominally a Democrat.

@Corner Stone: @geg6: You’re doing lunch wrong in the city —
Siam on 1st Ave 50 feet east of Smithfield is very respectable Thai for ~10
Palymra on Smithfield and 1st Ave is ~$9 Lebanese
Storms in the basement of 4th and Cherry is decent Italian at $12 or so
Ephesus Pizza on 3rd and Market is very good creative pizza for $8
Bills Bar and Burger in the Convention Center Westin is very good burgers and bar food at ~$12/person
and then there are a bunch of chains that should cost you $7 to $12
David Anderson
@geg6: The courthouse is on the end of Grant Street near the busway/Amtrak station, right?
Bea’s Tacqueria on Smithfield is 2 blocks away and very tasty. Corner of Liberty and Penn has a brand new Mexican place that is good… Both are within a 5 minute walk of the courthouse. Bills Bar and Burger is 3 minutes away across the street.

@geg6: Park on the Northside near the Stadiums (ideally in the Carnegie Science Center lot near Heinz Field, that should be ~$9 for the day) Free light rail ride from Allegheny Station to Wood Street, 3 blocks walk east to the courthouse

And who therefore don’t give a fuck about blue-collar anything (despite Bernie’s lip service), let alone institutionalized racism and misogyny, which Bernie can’t admit exacerbates the economic issues.

My grand jury experience was all in one day – we probably heard 20 cases, most were either simple drugs cases or sexual abuse. The sheer volume was stressful, worse than the petit jury murder trialso.
The worst cases were both sexual abuse of children or retarded girls in small town rural communities. Terrible, both of them. `Nuff said, too much really.
