On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
This weekday feature is for Balloon Juicers who are on the road, travelling, etc. and wish to share notes, links, pictures, stories, etc. from their escapades. As the US mainland begins the end of the Earth day as we measure it, many of us rise to read about our friends and their transient locales.
So, please, speak up and share some of your adventures, observations, and sights as you explore, no matter where you are. By concentrating travel updates here, it’s easier for all to keep up-to-date on the adventures of our fellow Commentariat. And it makes finding some travel tips or ideas from 6 months ago so much easier to find…
Have at ’em, and have a safe day of travels!
Should you have any pictures (tasteful, relevant, etc….) you can email them to [email protected] or just use this nifty link to start an email: Start an Email to send a Picture to Post on Balloon Juice
First up, some on-the-scene pictures from Raven, now with more fish!
Couple of sunset shots and cleaning a Pompano!
I am blessed with a great local supermarket chain called Lotte and they have an incredible fresh fish collection, mostly whole that they then cut to your needs. I’ve seen Pompano there a lot, but never tried it. Raven’s catch looks quite a bit bigger than what I’m used to seeing there, but now I’m thinking I might need to explore some recipes.
Next up, from bystander:
Where it was taken: From the terrace of our rental apartment in Rome.
When: Yesterday, 4/23
Other notes or info about the picture: In Rome for a couple of weeks. Any Roman juicers want to meet up, let’s see if it’s possible.
I’ll be happy to help coordinate, though I think that’s normally Anne Laurie’s bailiwick, so I hope I’m not stepping on her toes!
If you’re interested, drop me a line and I’ll pass on to bystander. So – a Roman meetup this weekend?
Next up, from juju:
Two of these pictures were taken at various times over the last year or so on my iPhone. The sunset pictures were taken last week, also on my iPhone. I’m not Bill in Glendale.
The lighthouse with the black horizontal stripes is the Bodie Island lighthouse near Oregon Inlet. For non locals it is pronounced the same way you would say body. This was taken last fall before it got dark, just as the light started its work for the night.
The three sunset pictures are of the sunset over the Pamlico sound. The first picture was taken off the deck of my mother’s beach house in Avon last Thursday. You can’t see the sound unless you look carefully with a magnifying glass.
The second and third sunset pictures were taken Friday on a tootle to the sound side access in the neighborhood. The black dots in the picture with the black dots, are the kites of kite surfers. It was very windy on Friday.
The last picture is the Hatteras lighthouse. I took this picture a few autumns ago. I like it because the moon is in the shot and though it took quite a while, there are no people standing around the lighthouse.
Thanks juju – I’ve seen both those lighthouses a few times each. My wife loves the coast and she has a weakness for lighthouses, so we always go out of our way to see them if we can. And I’ve been known to fly kites in both SC and NC when at the beach.
I’m sure I screwed up the order, so my apologies if so. Thanks again for sharing!
Finally for today, some great pictures from MomSense:
I thought I would send you some photos from some of my hikes in Maine.
The first is from the Bowdoin Coastal Studies Center in Harpswell, Maine. I took it on a visit there last year and it is looking out at one of the
many small islands off the coast. I returned on Easter this year and was
too busy with the dog to take many photos but I did manage to get a few
photos of an osprey who was circling over us before flying back to the nest.
Osprey are so beautiful. Thank you!
The next group of photos are from the same trip last year at the Hamilton
Audubon Sanctuary in West Bath, Maine. By then end of the hike the sun was much brighter and you can see how the light changes the “mood” of the ocean and sky. The entrance into the woods is so cool. You walk through a tunnel of trees.
Wow – Maine is just..so..gorgeous! Thank you – and I hope you send more, especially if you find any mushrooms worthy of a good photo.
And to wrap things up, I was hoping to test something new, but it didn’t work as hoped-for.
So, do trust this link – it’s to MomSense’s GoogleDrive. Short of downloading it, editing it, then re-uploading it, I couldn’t get video embed to work and be oriented correctly on the site.
I’m going to try to attach a short video of an inch worm I almost collided
with. He was so busily trying to get somewhere! You can hear the
beautiful sounds of the birds and creatures in the forest.

Thank you so much! On some future morning, I hope to post some similar videos that capture the sounds of nature as a nice soundtrack.
Have a great day everyone, and please do let me know if you’d like to attend the Rome meetup!
NotMax
Pompano en papillote. Mmmmmmm.
Alain the site fixer
@NotMax: merci!
Elizabelle
I love this feature. Beautiful pics, everyone. But not enough Korra!
@ bystander: an apartment overlooking the Coliseum? Wow. Have never been to Rome.
Schlemazel
bystander: Yeah, its too bad you couldn’t find a place with a more interesting view! HOLY COW!
OzarkHillbilly
Nice pics, all.
rikyrah
Wow. All the pictures are fabulous?
raven
I have a picture of Bohdi at Bodie Island Lighthouse! I’m off to catch the boat.

Since my name came up… You all never see the pics that come out of my camera, they ALL go though Lightroom and some though Photoshop before you see them. I shoot very few pics with my phone(a Galaxy Note Edge) though it shoots really nice pics since I usually have my regular camera with me and the camera has zoom which the phone doesn’t have and the camera shoots RAW which the phone doesn’t(the newer Samsung phones can shoot RAW). I shoot RAW because it can overcome issues with exposure and white balance and can give you a much great color range when you process it in Lightroom(or Adobe Camera RAW).
OzarkHillbilly
@raven: Tight lines.
Elizabelle
@raven: Boat where? May some fishing be in your future.
Quinerly
Beautiful pictures. Especially love the lighthouse pictures from my birth state. Hatteras is a must if ever on the coast of NC. There’s a great Nat Geo cover and extensive article years back on how they moved it because beach erosion was about to take it. Love seeing the picture of Bodie (indeed pronounced “Body”). A print of Bodie done by my favorite NC coastal artist, Alan Cheek, has hung in my St. Louis home for years….along with one of his originals of Cape Lookout (“Diamond Shoals,” my favorite)…Poco can watch Lookout’s light from my family’s beach place and took his very first boat ride 3 years ago to Shackleford Banks (wild ponies!) and to Cape Lookout National Seashore. Thanks for all the pictures each morning…and special thanks for this sweet morning feature.

@OzarkHillbilly:
A shout out to one of my favorite bars/restaurants in Morehead City, NC….”Tight Lines.” Great people, great place. Mostly locals.
Juju
@Quinerly: My sister lives in Morehead and I’ visit her from time to time and I’ve never heard of Tight Lines. I had to google it. We like to go to the Ruddy Duck. They know how to deal with me and my seafood allergy. I’ll have to try Tigjt Lines after I do some research on their seafood handling practices.
debbie
@raven:
How’s your leg? And why do you have that fish on a leash? He appears to be dead.
debbie
MomSense, I’d forgotten how beautiful Maine is. Lovely pictures!
satby
The pics are all great and I bet that fish was delicious! I join everyone in envy of your great rental in Rome, bystander! And the link to the inchworm video worked for me, so that was cute too.
MomSense
Rome, beaches and lighthouses oh my. Love seeing those photos.
@Elizabelle:
It’s hard to get non blurry photos of her on a hike. She is very busy. I think I do have one I’ll send to Alain.
Quinerly
@Juju:
I’ll be in Morehead next week. Grew up near there and still have a place at Pine Knoll Shores. What a small world Balloon Juice always turns out to be! The Ruddy Duck is one of my favorites. Much better than Tight Lines (it’s on Arendell, near The Arendell Club). Stick with the Ruddy Duck for food (and view…and that great horseshoe shaped bar) Tight Lines has a nice bar, bar food, sports on tv. I think they are finally brewing their own beer (I think it is owned by people who own a restaurant in Beaufort) Have you been to Floyd’s?…a little pricey but very good. I also like Spouter’s Inn in Beaufort. Been going there since the 1970’s. When was the last time you were in the area? Hope I’m not being too nosey. I get a a kick out of Balloon Juice connections.
Major Major Major Major
So great to see so many pictures from all around the world. Maine looks like NorCal!
Sab
Alain,
I never said thanks for the four little arrows on the right side that you installed for android users about a month ago, but THANKS. They work great.
rikyrah
I love lighthouses…always have, since I was a kid.
rikyrah
@Sab:
I did say thanks, but they really are a good feature for the blog.
Cermet
Hey, finally get to post here since I am actually on a trip (stopped at a library to use their internet.) Heading to the parasitic state of delaware. Deciding on a route – do I go thru a lot of back country roads or pay their outrageous tolls. Weather is drizzling and some fog so back roads might be a very poor choice.
J R in WV
@Cermet:
I got lost on back country roads long ago in Delaware, but it was pretty and Mrs J was napping, so why not?
Bystander, who do I call to rent one of those apartments in Rome with a view of the Coliseum? Two weeks sounds like almost enough time to spend in Rome.
rlchina
great pics keep them coming…
Alain the site fixer
@Sab: glad you like them – Major Major Major Major’s help was invaluable!
Alain the site fixer
@Cermet: I hope you go the scenic way. I used to know a back way from Newark to Lancaster and I still dream of it, 20+ years later.
Alain the site fixer
@rlchina: Some of yours are up tomorrow or Friday as I recall!
Juju
@Quinerly: Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I’ve been dealing with a migraine all day. My sister and her husband are renovating a house in Emerald Isle. They got married at the aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores. I’ve been to Floyd’s a number of times. It’s a safe restaurant for me, given my seafood allergy. The Ruddy Duck makes the best nachos. My sister and I have talked about going there for dinner, but I just haven’t had time to get out there. if I’m going to deal with the drive, I’d rather go to Hatteras island. I’ve never been to Spouter’s Inn.
Juju
@rikyrah: I love lighthouses too. One thing I always do is to make sure I get to see the lighthouse during the day and at night, if it’s still a working lighthouse. It’s good to see a lighthouse doing what a lighthouse is supposed to do.
Quinerly
@Juju:
Your sister got married across the street from my place in PKS. I’ll be there and in the area mist of May. Small, small world. My family’s first place in the 1960’s was at Salter Path and my father was a building contractor….he built a lot of houses in Emerald Isle in the 1970’s. Small, small Balloon Juice world.?
Bill
Those pictures of Maine are balm for my soul. We’ve been going there since I was a small person, and my Aunt and Uncle bought a wonderful old farmhouse on 70+ acres on an island off the coast a few years back. A week in Maine is never enough. I have to find a way to move there permanently. Perhaps an apocalypse of some sort?
