Just a (hopefully!) quick update to the core WordPress install.
I’m hitting the sack after doing it, so I won’t be in the comments; feel free to suggest site tweaks or what-have-you as I will be planning a lot of that this coming week.
‘night all!
Oh – Open Thread!
Baud
So I guess this is it. It’s been an honor and a privilege commenting here with you all.

WP reporting Drumpf proposing massive cuts to Medicaid and other anti-poverty programs.

@Baud: lol. Don’t leave, the fun’s just beginning!

FYWP will send the update to the trash folder.

Is this the same dead on arrival piece of pigshit that Mulvaney unveiled a couple of weeks ago?
AJ
Alain could we have an easy way to go to the prior post from the top of the current post?
I know some sites you can just swipe right or left, but even if we had the links like are at the bottom of posts that would be great. Thank you!
Forgot to say I’m usually reading on chrome for mobile on Android in case that matters.
Alain the site fixer
ok, On the Road post for tomorrow complete. Repository updated. Time to update the beast. There may a moment or two where there site doesn’t respond as it updates key files; take a deep breath, count to 5, and reload the site and it should be all good.
Alain the site fixer
@AJ: grey arrow to left or right of screen (desktop site). They’re subtle but there for prev and next post.
Alain the site fixer
All done.
night all
AJ
@Alain the site fixer: but are those available before I scroll down to the bottom of the post? I’ll check. Ty again.

Just listening to Rory Gallagher’s great vignette of a chaotic small-town concert, “Brute Force and Ignorance”. Strikes me that would be a perfect theme for the Trump/Pence show, especially after the flood of stories sourced to Pence insiders informing us that the VP is so dense he knew nothing about all the lawbreaking going on.
Another Scott
@efgoldman: It’s basically a slightly fleshed out version of their “budget” from March. WaPo:
(Emphasis added.)
Mulvaney is an insane ideologue. But we knew that.
Trinkets for Ivanka aren’t going to sell this either. $2.5B/yr is nothing, not in a ~ $4200B/yr budget. $20B/yr for infrastructure for the whole country is nothing, also too.
Fingers crossed on the FYWP upgrade!!
Cheers,
Scott.

@AJ: I don’t think the gray “previous” and “next” arrows work on the mobile version. It think it has to do with the mobile theme they’re using. (There was some discussion about trying to hack that functionality in, but I guess it was too difficult or had other side-effects).
I don’t know of a quick way to move between posts on Android either. I agree it would be very nice functionality to have.
Cheers,
Scott.

@efgoldman: That piece of shit was for the remainder of FY2017. Democrats managed to save us from almost all of those cuts with the budget negotiations a few weeks ago. This is a newly updated and tweaked piece of shit for FY2018.

It’s hard to tell; one turd looks so much like another
Roger Moore
@Alain the site fixer:
I read that as snark about the likely outcome of a WP update.
Alain the site fixer
@Another Scott: I’ll investigate a better solution while I also look at a slider that Works on both desktop and mobile site.
Roger Moore
@Another Scott:
That’s odd. I remember a time when Republicans were seriously arguing in favor of tax cuts because they were worried about us paying down the national debt too quickly.

Another Hillary meme destroyed.
I blame Obama.
Alain the site fixer
@Roger Moore: yeah, on second read, think you’re correct. Ok time it put down iPad and sleep. Bye

@Baud: It’s been a privilege. Good bye.

@Shalimar:
I’m going to make the bold prediction that it doesn’t matter because Congress isn’t going to be able to pass a 2018 budget anyway. I will make the even bolder prediction that we will get nothing but continuing resolutions until the next time Democrats control both Houses of Congress.
Omnes Omnibus
@amk: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay never said who actually summitted first.
amk
@Baud: so, see you in fifteen minutes, then?

While the bumbling DC circus show is still on (prolly forever), pity the real talented one is gone.

@amk: Shit! Unemployed clowns.

@AJ:
On the mobile version of the site, there are “previous post” and “next post” buttons sort of near the top—just below the original post and before the comments. That’s all there is right now.

Alain, a couple of people were saying in comments the other night that the ad video from ora.tv was causing all Balloon-Juice tabs to reload and reload.
I was having a similar problem in Chrome with ora.tv where it was calling out to the ad over and over and I’d see it load the script on the bottom of the page, even though I’d scrolled past the ad. It slowed my browser down. I finally had to specify it in an ad blocker to get the video to stop, but I still see it call out and the ad blocker shuts it down. I think it’s slowing everything down.
Anything that can be done about that?
amk
@Omnes Omnibus: LOL.
Omnes Omnibus
@amk: You may find it funny.
Another Scott
@Roger Moore: Yeah. I remember that, too.
I also remember that government borrowing was bad because of “crowding out” of more rewarding investment in the private sector and that subsequently causing high interest rates. OMG!! Look at all the Crowding Out since May 2008!!11
:-/
Mulvaney apparently wants everyone not in the 0.01% to be serfs.
Cheers,
Scott.

small mercies and all that.

Scoop: Trump budget to slash entitlements by $1.7 trillion
Pablo Martinez Monsivais / AP
President Trump’s 2018 budget proposal on Tuesday won’t reform Social Security or Medicare — in line with his campaign promise — but it will make serious cuts to other entitlement programs. A source with direct knowledge tells me the Trump budget will save $1.7 trillion on the mandatory side over the next ten years.
…………
Where the entitlement cuts are made: From programs including SNAP (food stamps), CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program), and SSDI (Disability Insurance). The budget proposal will also assume that Trump can sign into law the American Health Care Act — the Obamacare repeal and replace bill that passed the House and is now being considered by the Senate. That bill makes substantial cuts to Medicaid.
How the entitlement money will be saved: The source tells me there’ll be an “emphasis on work requirements for able-bodied people” to save money on these social welfare programs.

McConnell steps into Obamacare firing line
Whether Senate Republicans can repeal the health law largely depends on the longtime GOP leader.
By Burgess Everett and Jennifer Haberkorn

McConnell’s role will come into sharp relief this week, with Trump out of the country and the Russia spotlight shifting somewhat away from Congress after the naming of a special prosecutor. The Congressional Budget Office on Wednesday will deliver a highly anticipated report on the House health care bill that is expected to show it would cause huge coverage losses. That will provide a new round of ammunition to Obamacare supporters, even as it allows the Senate to truly start writing its own plan.
So far, McConnell has led a series of closed-door meetings with senators, where they’ve mainly aired their grievances with the House bill without making substantive progress, according to attendees. In the coming days, McConnell will have to move to break the impasse.
“He’ll have to make some decisions. I’m sure it will be with the recommendation and input from our members, but there will come a point in which we’ve talked some of this stuff to death,” said Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), a close McConnell lieutenant. “He’s made it very clear, at the end of this we’re going to have to vote.”
……..
McConnell’s strategy is to keep the debate within his conference for as long as possible. There will be no public hearings as a bill is drafted, according to several Republican senators and aides, and he’s imploring senators not to leak.

Republicans are keeping their Trumpcare bill classified. The Russians may see it before the American people do.

It’s an experiment. They want to see how badly they can screw their own voters before they finally turn to the Democrats.
Unfortunately, their thesis is “all the way to their graves, as long as those people get it in the neck. too.”

FYWP, and F your shitey updates as well.

@Yarrow
Privacy Badger (made and distributed by Electronic Frontier Foundation) is also available for Chrome, IIRC, in the app store (should be free).
Does a much better job of stopping crap like ora.tv dead in its tracks from the get-go than adblockers. Once the add-on is installed, go to the page with the offending item, click on the little badger icon and move slider for ora.tv to the red (blocked). Thenceforth will never be troubled by such invidious and insidious crapola from ora again.
Privacy Badger is on the must-have add-ons list for Firefox for me.

@MomSense: Well, among other things, they want to drown the government in a bathtub.
Another way of expressing that is that they hate America and want to slice it up into fiefdoms, which they would control. Pretty simple, actually. They want a medieval society and they are the barons. They are not ‘conservatives’ they are regressives through and through.

Why is the auto-play video back now?
Alain the site fixer
@luzeelu: because it’s a major revenue source for the site and it’s been “gone” since some recent changes to browsers blocked it because of mixed https and http content, it’s now setup correctly so not throwing security errors.
luzeelu
@Alain the site fixer: I understand, but it’s a shame. It really messes with my limited and expensive data allowance!
Alain the site fixer
@luzeelu: We’re working on it. I can’t promise anything, but I hope to have it better asap. Hopefully you can read a comment above and find some peace…
