Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The lights are all blinking red.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

When we show up, we win.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Consistently wrong since 2002

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

We will not go back.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Stand up, dammit!

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Pet Bleg III: The Buddy Update

Look at that face! You know you want to help that face!!!!

BL has sent along an update about Buddy. First the good stuff:

Buddy now likes to play ball. At first he was horrible at catching balls, but is getting better. His walking is also improving daily. At first he could hardly walk; now he is trotting short distances. He loves scratches and sleeps next to me as I work. He’s a really happy dog and should make someone very happy.
And now we tug your heart strings and ask you to reach deep, deep, deep!
Thanks for your help so far.  I have sent emails and phone calls to about 10 rescue groups so far, and heard back from one. That one (a lab rescue) is processing the information to see if they will accept Buddy. I think we will have better luck if I get him all his tests and vaccinations.
Buddy will spend the next few days at my daughter.
I am scheduling Buddy for vaccinations, tests and to be fixed later this week.
I estimate the initial costs for Buddy, not counting the $300-$500 that Rescue Groups ask for in donation to be $1710.
Buddy
Doctor visit $52
Anasthesia Check/Fix (checked w/vet) $520
Fecal check $51
Bordatella $37
Influenza $43
Lepto $37
Lyme $43
Heartworm screen $57
Cardiologist $700
Heartworm Prev – 6 mon $60
Lyme screen $50
Tick-Flea Prev – 3 mon $60
$1,710
I already paid for a rabies shot so it is not in the above costs. The estimate for the cardiologist to check his potential arrhythmia came from my daughter that has a dog with arrhythmia and recently saw a cardiologist.
I started a youcaring fundraiser, since they seem to charge the least in fees.
Here is the link.
https://www.youcaring.com/buddy-830284
Any assistance for BL efforts to get Buddy situated would be greatly appreciated! All lines are open. Operators are standing by.

Made a donation. With all the neutering and vaccinations done, I might be able to get a rescue down here to look at taking him. Usually the rescue groups want donations to help cover this sort of stuff. I live in SW VA. I know two rescues that might be good for an older/larger dog.

The cost for the cardiologist is about right. I live in Northern VA and one of my dogs had to see a cardiologist every 18 months. That cost around $500, about 5 years ago…..

At first he could hardly walk; now he is trotting short distances.

This makes me wonder if he was confined somewhere and escaped rather than wandered off. If so whoever confined him is probably content with the result and isn’t looking for him. Despicable? Yes, but much worse happens all the time. I’m so pleased that he’s cared for and about.

@p.a.: At the height of the Depression, young man was trying to hitchhike across Indiana. A car stops at his thumb’s gesture; the driver says, ” Are you a Republican or a Democrat?” The kid says, “Democrat.” The speeds of in a cloud of dust. This exact thing happens three more times. The kid learns his lesson. The next car that stops is driven by a beautiful women; she asks the question. He says, “Republican:” she says, “Hop in.” He gets in and she drives off. The kid sits in the car watch her drive and watching her skirt slide up her thighs as she changed gears. After a little while, he shouted, “Stop the car and let me out. Someone I went to law school with took a job at a firm that was 1/3 litigation, 1/3 bankruptcy, and 1/2 management side labor. After about a year at the firm, she was asked to work on a labor case. She objected because she was pro-labor. The firm said, “Do your job.” She refused. They fired her. I didn’t feel much sympathy. I am pro-labor; I wouldn’t have gone to that firm.

A cat bleg for the feline fanciers: does anyone have any experience with cat allergies or cat autoimmune issues? Our cat Annie has stumped our vet with her odd issues, including crustiness on her ears and paw pads. She’s been treated for both ear mites and tapeworms, but she only gets better for a few weeks and then starts going back downhill again.

I’m medium-sure she’s allergic to Keaton’s gastrointestinal food, which is a problem, because he needs that in order to poop properly. Argh.

We’re seeing an internist next week to see if we can rule out autoimmune, but if anyone has tips for what I can feed both an allergic cat AND a constipated cat, I’m all ears.

If the rescue places on East coast are charging so much to accept a dog and then charging so much more for a person to adopt they don’t appear to me to actually care about the dogs.
I know many places in Mid west want to recover what they spent on vet and find homes for dogs; i lived close to Chicago where there were so many Mastiff’s and Pit Bulls that were rescued from dog fighters that were very sweet tempered.

Shouldn’t Kasowitz refer to a criminal defense specialist in his firm? Or refer to some other firm if his doesn’t have any?
    Maybe you’ll get a call!

G got a bunch of prescription wet food at the vet. We’ll see if she eats it. ?

They gave her some fluids so I think she’s feeling a little better from that — when I came home from work, she was lounging in the open (rather than hiding under the table) and only went to hide when I opened up her carrier to wash her blankie. (Well, it’s an old towel, but same diff.)

@LAO: @NYCMT: @Omnes Omnibus: @efgoldman: The top national security lawyers are Mark Zaid and Brad Moss at Zaid’s firm. They specialize in clearance issues, classification, legitimate whistle blowing, things like that. Neither of them would take the President as they are offering to handle all FOIA requests of the administration regarding the various Russian and other allegations pro bono. My understanding from the reporting I’ve seen is that the President is considering bringing Lewandowski and Bossie on to run a war room to counter Mueller and the congressional investigations. The strategy appears to be to try to tarnish Mueller’s reputation. The problem, of course, is that Lewandowski and Bossie may be subjects of the investigation. News reporting has indicatded that Lewandowski approved Carter Page’s July trip to Moscow.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis 500 pole-winner Scott Dixon and the retired driver Dario Franchitti were unharmed after being robbed at gunpoint in the drive-through lane of a Taco Bell making a late-night food run, the police said Monday.

The robbery happened shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday less than a mile from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where, a few hours earlier, Dixon had won the top starting position for next Sunday’s Indy 500. The police did not immediately disclose what was taken from the two drivers.

Two boys, ages 15 and 14, were arrested a short time later.

The police report listed three victims: Dixon, his wife, Emma, and Franchitti. Aaron Hamer, a police spokesman, later said Dixon’s wife had not been in the car.

Two crimes were committed here: 1) the robbery and 2) ordering from Taco Bell.

Home now, so made a donation in memory of Walter and his summer teeth – the punim on this pooch called Buddy is irresistible in the sheer nervous optimism evident there. Kind of feel like Walter was Buddy’s angel – guiding him to a BJ safe house for critters; no sign in the window – just a sympathetic human swearing at an illuminated rectangle, and finding new sobriquets that involve the color orange. Sort of an Underground Railroad for our four legged friends…

    @Mnemosyne:

We have two cats, one lazy snoozer who can’t get enough to eat, rescued from a culvert when she was 8″ long and 6 months old, so food greed is understandable. Name Punkin, because years ago we let it get out of hand and she was the size and shape of a pumpkin. Only black with dark brown trim.

The other cat is outdoors 80% of the time, even in rain/winter, and needs every calorie she can choke down. Spike is very active, but Punkin will steal her food.

So we feed the in different rooms, Punkin eats in the Royal Dining Hall, aka bathroom, with door latched, until all of Spike’s food is gone.

Maybe you need to feed your allergic cat seperately from your constipated cat?

We had a cat with bowel issues, constipation, after he ate a rabbit, a big rabbit, all of it, every scrap but the fuzz on the rabbits butt. We used metamucil powder and canned pumpkin mixed into his food, recommended by senior Vet, worked great. Other vet wanted to do bowel surgery on an 18 y o cat. No. Not.
