Can’t watch the video at work, but I like it already!
When is the dang CBO report due? I’m on pins and needles!
Lurking Canadian
@clay: Pins and needles? Isn’t it a bit like waiting for the movie version of the book?
I mean sure, you expect to enjoy the implementation, but you already know how it’s going to end.

Oh I love that! Words of wisdom, if only 45 could listen. Saw the picture of Pope Francis looking absolutely grim beside a buffoonishly grinning 45. Made me shake my head.

The conservative replies to Fox are pretty amusing for their ignorance. Not only do they not get Fox is a “liberal” in Mexican politics because Fox is a free market captialist but the conservretard mind can’t grok Mexico’s drug problem is because of the massive amounts of money rich and middle class Americans will pay for their drug habits. Free market, how does it work?

Reports: Trump Told Duterte US Has Two Nuclear Subs Near Korean Peninsula. One comment, one question. The comment: I think we’ve found out where the leaks of classified information are coming from. The question: Can we impeach him NOW!!!

@clay:
He’s totally trolling him, he begins by saying that Donald is doing it for the wrong reasons. Shows him getting sworn in, and says that unlike when he was sworn in and thinking about how to improve the lives of Mexicans, Twitler was thing about whether his crowd was smaller than Obama’s, “Obama’s was bigger, much bigger”. Produces the most beautiful piece of chocolate cake to help him focus. Helping millionaires and billionaire and not reaching out will make you infamous. When you got elected you did not become the boss of the people, they became your boss. If you don’t improve their lives they will say you’re fired and you will be the biggest loser your proud country has ever produced. There’s still time to change it, do what you said you were going to do.
There’s much more but that’s the gist of it. Funny.

Here is a question, why do Melania and Ivanka wear formal black attire for the trip to the Vatican, but not Hijab in Saudi Arabia? I know this may seem like small potatoes in the big scheme of things, but it seems either a deliberate snub or a complete lack of diplomatic decorum.
Jeffro
@hovercraft: The cake thing…that’s a nice touch!

@Tom:
Nope, not for that. President has broad powers to declassify anything he wants. We’re going to have to rely on the Russian probe and related corruption.

@Ian: Short version: the rules and expectations are less in Saudi Arabia than at the Vatican.

He is an excellent troll.
Twitler should take note of the foreign politicians and ex-politicians who are trolling him, they are expressing the sentiments of the people in power who don’t have the luxury of telling him what a jackass he is. Fox, the ex-PM in Australia, these are some of our closest allies!
eric
@LAO: not completely true. simply because it became declassified does not mean it is automatically not impeachable. For example, if, as a result of some disclosure, thousands were killed or US sold (read: soil) was invaded, he could be impeached for treason or merely for the political optics. It is akin to the old line: supreme court is not final because it is right, but right because it is final. The House is the sole arbiter of impeachment, so if they say it is an impeachable offense, then it is.
LAO
@eric: fair enough.

Yes, but stupidly blurting shit out isn’t ‘declassifying’ – it’s plain old loose lips, and one of these days an American is going to pay with his/her life for his stupidity.

@Ian: Because the Saudis don’t require it for distinguished foreign visitors, but the Vatican’s Protocol Office does.
We can ponder the various reasons, and I’m sure that in the case of KSA their reasons are complicated* and in the case of the Vatican the reason is that the protocol office is trying to enforce the power (such as it is these days) and prestige of the Papacy, but that’s the bottom line. KSA has power among non-Muslims because of their oil reserves and financial status and among Muslims because the king is the guardian of (and has physical control of access to) Mecca and the other holy sites; the Pope has power purely for intangible reasons, and so it’s more important for the Vatican to enforce the appearance of respect in people receiving a papal audience. KSA is mostly concerned with enforcing its norms on its own people and on foreigners residing in the country–they can afford to be more lenient towards important visitors.
*Reasons may include: traditional hospitality requires making guests comfortable, the king wants to let the religious police they are the boss of him, but he’s the boss of them, and sending the message that KSA isn’t really stuck in a 15th-century time loop. People who know more about the internal cultural-political workings of KSA may be able to add more, and maybe eliminate some of mine.

@Stan: Trump is an asshole and a dangerous buffoon — but he’s not going get impeached over his conversation with the President of the Philippines.

@a thousand flouncing lurkers (was fidelio):
Also, the formal black and veil is only required for the official meeting inside the Vatican. They don’t have to dress that way the entire day, or the entire visit, just inside that room.

Also, just because the photo amuses me: I like that Francis lives up to his name and made sure to meet the Obamas’ dogs while he was at the White House.
The Pope’s gift to Trump was an autographed copy of his recent encyclical about climate change, where he specifically states that battling climate change is a moral issue and all Christians have a duty to work to mitigate it. Ha!

This is brilliant! Can Vicente Fox become the managing director at Fox news? Heck, his name is made for the role.

Okay, when you’ve got the fucking ex-president of Mexico trolling you, you have a yuuuge problem. I’m wondering when Tony Blair and Kevin Rudd will start trolling this man.
a thousand flouncing lurkers (was fidelio)
@Mnemosyne: Yes, the requirements are very specific and very limited. I’m reminded of the 19th and early 20th century requirements for formal court presentations before royalty, because that’s pretty much what this is. As I said on another thread, we don’t think of it as applying in the US, but official visitors to the White House who meet the president (or, presumably, the first lady) are supposed to be in business attire. You see that when a sports team shows up at the White House after a championship win, they’re expected to wear suits and ties if they’re men. It doesn’t matter if they’re Americans or not, as the pictures I found of NHL teams demonstrate.
