Serial killer, cosplay afficionado, plagiarist, and newly hired employee at Homeland Security is a big fat fucking liar and it may cost him:
Sitting on the tarmac at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on Jan. 15, Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. sent a text message to one of his captains after a brief verbal exchange with a passenger.
The sheriff explained in the text what should be done when Riverwest resident Dan Black got off the plane.
“Just a field interview, no arrest unless he become an asshole with your guys,” Clarke wrote Captain Mark Witek. “Question for him is why he said anything to me. Why didn’t he just keep his mouth shut?”
“Follow him to baggage and out the door,” Clarke continued. “You can escort me to carousel after I point him out.”
A copy of the text messages was provided by an attorney for Black, who is suing the sheriff, Milwaukee County and several unnamed deputies over the incident.
Records show the matter, which has drawn national attention, was big enough that federal investigators looked at Clarke and his staff’s handling of the case. Clarke has said he is taking a job as assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, though officials have not confirmed this.
In other words, Clarke was lying:
Black, 24, says he was detained, interviewed and escorted out of Mitchell International Airport on Jan. 15 by a half-dozen deputies after a brief run-in with the sheriff on the plane. He says in the federal suit that he was the victim of an unlawful stop and arrest.
Since Black went public with his complaint, Clarke has threatened and belittled his fellow passenger, calling Black a “snowflake” and saying anyone, including Black, who harasses him on an airplane might get “knocked out.”
But now Clarke is giving his version of the events on the plane, which matches Black’s account, except in a couple of details.
Asshole. On the upside, we don’t know if he is a Nazi.

On a side note, Charles Blow is all about The Flynn Affair today…it’s all centered on the simplest of questions: why does Trumpov continue to freak out where Mike Flynn is concerned?
I think not only did Trumpov like Mike Flynn’s worldview and “go with his gut” that Flynn was a-ok…I’m sure the Russians helped steer him to the Trumpov campaign, and ensured that Trumpov knew that keeping Flynn close made them quite happy.
Ugh.

Clarke is a sociopath who shouldn’t be trusted with watering a houseplant, let alone leading a department in a federal agency. Yes, it’s an important case, but so far no appeals court has seen fit to agree with the Administration about the legality of the ban.

I’m pretty sure the main reason is because he prizes loyalty above anything else. He wants oaths of personal loyalty from his subordinates. We haven’t destroyed our democratic culture to the point that competent, self-respecting people are willing to abase themselves that way, so he’s left with the dregs- losers, incompetents, and others who no other administration would ever employ. I’m pretty sure that’s why he’s been so slow to fill the rest of the jobs that require Senate confirmation: he can’t find enough people who are horrible enough to swear an oath of fealty while still being able to pass a security screening and Senate confirmation.
scott (the other one)
@mai naem mobile: That was absolutely shocking, even by Trump standards. How clearly are those the actions of a desperately insecure (or, as my wife thinks, simply overwhelmed and confused) man?

@Jeffro:
Trump probably developed a hard-on for Flynn precisely because he thought that Flynn hated Obama.
And then it is very likely that Trump discounted Obama’s warning about Flynn because Trump didn’t think that anything a black man had to say was worth listening to. Obama tried to respect the transition process and give his informed judgment. Trump was the ignorant, egotistical Man Baby who rejected Obama’s honest, objective reservations about Flynn.
And when Yates and others came with warnings, Trump could dismiss them as representing Democrats or the “deep state” or inconvenient false messengers simply because they refused to confirm Trump’s obviously excellent decision.
Trump’s intellectual inadequacy can be seen in his choice of Flynn and his subsequent reaction, even before you consider any Putin tie-in.

@Roger Moore: I think that’s part of it. I had a colleague that would hire the most barely competent people because it ensured that she was never overshadowed and that they would remain intensely loyal to her because they could barely get through their day without her.
Trump is therefore torn between hiring people that are less knowledgable of the job than him (a very tall order) or simply finding people that are sufficiently loyal that even if they are better at the job, they won’t overshadow him. We’ve already seen comments from cabinet officials that they have to walk a fine line there.

Which is why the current president made sure that the head of his former department was never going to be a threat to him. Snopes, being scrupulously literal, claims this means he is not wearing unearned military badges. The point, of course, is that it makes not a damn bit of difference whether they’re real badges and a real uniform. The people seeing him, see him wearing a uniform and badges. Real or made up, the impact is exactly the same. He’s stealing military honors in a lazier, more cowardly way.

@Kay:
Kay,
Did you catch this from DeVos?
Betsy DeVos All Smiles as She Endorses States’ Rights to Discriminate Against Children
By Christina Cauterucci
……………..
The U.S. Secretary of Education declined to provide even one example of any kind of discrimination that might preclude a school from receiving federal funding. “I think the Office of Civil Rights and our Title IX protections are broadly applicable across the board,” DeVos said, which is quite rich, considering that the Republican Party has made a major stink over what they consider OCR’s overreach in addressing sexual assault and discrimination in schools. “But when it comes to parents making choices on behalf of their students—”
“This isn’t about parents making choices,” Clark interrupted. “This is about use of federal dollars.”
In the final moments of the exchange, DeVos delivered what she must have imagined to be an inspiring call to arms on behalf of American children. “I go back to the bottom line, is we believe that parents are the best equipped to make choices for their children’s schooling and education decisions and too many children today are trapped in schools that don’t work for them,” she said. “We have to do something different than continuing a top-down, one-size-fits-all approach. And that is the focus, and states and local communities are best equipped to make these decisions and framework on behalf of their students.”
DeVos calls what she’s endorsing “state flexibility.” States, she’s saying, should have the flexibility to exclude marginalized demographics from federally funded public schools if they deem it appropriate for their students. No cookie-cutter integrated school solutions for DeVos, who once praised education under Jim Crow as a pioneering example of school choice! The Secretary of Education wants students to have all of the options, including federally funded options that allow them to avoid learning alongside queer students, students of color, students of faith, or students with disabilities, if their parents prefer it that way.
